Choosing the right shell jacket: what’s the difference between a hardshell, softshell and windshell?

A hardshell jacket offers the most waterproof and windproof protection. Arc’teryx hardshells feature a new GORE-TEX ePE membrane free of added PFAS, providing breathable, weatherproof protection against heavy rain and snow.

A softshell jacket works differently. Our Fortius™ softshell fabrics balance durability, breathability, stretch and wind resistance, making them well suited to climbing, hiking and high-output days where freedom of movement and airflow matter more than full waterproof coverage. DWR finishes help shed light moisture in changing conditions, but softshells are not designed to replace a waterproof hardshell in heavy rain.

A windshell jacket is lighter again. It packs small, blocks wind and adds enough weather resistance for cool starts, exposed ridgelines or fast-moving routes where you want to travel light.
