Great trail running shoe!

The Sylan is a great trail running shoe for running quickly on less technical terrain. It functions well on smooth gravel or dirt, slab, and scree. It struggles with agility on rocky or terrain as you sit quite high in the shoe. The toe rocker which makes it quick on runnable terrain, also makes it less precise in technical sections. The shoe feels really durable and did not need any time to wear in to feel comfortable so I’m guessing I’ll get well over 500km in them! Overall I’d say it’s a great shoe to have in your line-up, but I would avoid wearing them while trying to run fast in technical trails.

Way too big :(

I really wanted to love this shoe! I ordered a 6, which is generally a very comfortable size for me, and it was massive! Even with insoles it was huge. I then ordered a 5.5, and it was still uncomfortaby large. The 5.5 didn't really work with my insoles as they felt too 'shallow'. The toe box is huge on these shoes. I would say I have normal width feet, even bordering on wide. I will return both and not order another size until I can try them on in person.

Customer Service
Hello Siobhan, thank you for your feedback, and we're sorry to hear the sizing didn't work out for you. We recommend measuring your foot length and using our footwear sizing chart to help find the best fit. It’s also helpful to try on different sizes in person, as you mentioned. We appreciate your input and hope you find a size that works for you in the future.

My go-to daily runner

The drop/roller is very trailrunning specific. The cushioning is comfortable and I don’t have to run in these shoes to season them, ran in them straight out of the box. The toe box is wider than the Norvans which makes the toes spread a bit more comfortably. The shoe is versatile on both road and trails, as you do not feel the lugs as much on roads like other trail shoes. But of course, it being designed as a trail shoes means the lugs might wear off faster if you run on the road. Comfort, cushioning, stability all in a shoe. I ran up to 65km in these and no complaints. Run Club Piccadilly London every Wednesday allows you to book a size and try them on!

Bomber trail running shoe

This shoe feels like a proper road running shoe that is up to the task of getting dirty along single track and up loose rocks and variable terrain. The rocker is really noticeable, with the shoe propelling you forward with every stride length. The caveat for the build of the shoe is that you do need to run on the balls of your feet. If you're looking for a trail focused running shoe that you would want to walk (heel strike) with, you may be happier with a Norvan. The Sylan is really built for speed along single track. I've found the grip to be quite good across multiple surface types (mud, dry dirt, rock slabs) and will definitely be reaching for this shoe more often than not. This review was written after ~50 kilometers with the shoe. Mostly single-track trail running, with some day hikes and one race (Mini-taur 10k).

Good uphill, fast downhill

I bought the Sylan shoe for day hiking, and it has good grip, is super light, and I appreciate the built-in sock to prevent debris. However, be careful going downhill. The shoes’ curved bottom makes it easy to go too fast!

Hi there, thank you for sharing your feedback. We’re happy to hear that you’ve enjoyed the good grip, lightweight feel, and the knit collar on the Sylan Shoe. Your insight about the rockered midsole making downhill movement a bit quick is really helpful, and we appreciate you pointing that out. Your feedback is valuable to us, and we’ll be sure to pass your comments along to our team.

Perfect for the trail!

I loved the breathable design, tucked in shoelaces, and the rocket/solitude color pop. The Sylan made me feel light and springy. They run a little big, so maybe get a half size down. I normally get an 8.5 but opted for the 8.perfect fit. Absolutely recommend these shoes for the trail!

Great every day running shoe

Arc'teryx has really stepped up their shoe game. I run every day, ranging between one mile and 30+ miles and these are a great shoe in the rotation for all distances. The slight curve on the bottom paired with some stiffness, makes it a fast shoe, without being an all out race shoe. We don't have much trail running where I live, so these end up being used on the pavement a lot and they work well for that as well. The toe box is roomier than comparable brands. The fit snug around the ankle and mid foot.

So comfortable, but the soles get chewed up quick

Love the fit and feel of these. They're the most comfortable trail shoe (or any shoe for that matter) I've ever had. But, I'm disappointed with how the soles are holding up. After just one little trail sesh, they showed major signs of ware. This was a 45 minute walk in a very cushy, mostly dirt trail with very minimal debris and rocky sections. Whyte Lake in West Vancouver, for any familiar locals. And I wasn't even running. Honestly, I would even go as far as saying it was being "cautious," since it was their first day of use and I was somewhat attached to keeping them looking fresh for at least a bit. There are small punctures in the midsole and toe of the shoe, and obvious crushing lines in the foam. Those I'm not so fussed about, but the punctures are surprising and disappointing. Unfortunately it's not an exaggeration to say I've had $10 slides from Old Navy hold up better and longer. Just something to consider... At this price, I'm feeling a bit gutted. But as I said, props to the design team for this sweet color way and snug fit. Love the little details like the lace tuck on the tongue, and the way the back of my heel fits perfectly into the back of the shoe. Feels amazing.

Really wanted to love these but not for me

I’ve tried many arcteryx styles. I have a joint with some arthritis so I was really hopeful that the break-over on these would make them perfect. Unfortunately, while the breakover, width of the toe box, materials and color are great, for me there isn’t enough support in the heel and the mid section rocker area leaves lots of extra material that couldn’t be tightened up. Darn. Will have to just stick with my Norvans. Really wish Arcteryx would add more supportive insoles in all their shoes!

Trail run delight!

I've been wearing these for the last month. Mostly valley trail runs in Squamish 10k and under. They're super light and comfortable, fit like a glove and am super happy with their performance. I was wondering if they would feel bulky because they are a bigger shoe than I usually run in, but they are so flawlessly light they don't feel big or bulky at all.

Amazing support and comfort

Admittedly I am in a niche market- arthritis in big toes and history of plantar fasciitis. For more "normal" running shoes I add arch support and a carbon fiber plate to prevent flexing at the big toes. These shoes need very little modification and they have immediately rocketed to the most favored spot in my rotation for anything off-pavement. Super comfy, supportive, and really well-made. Like my old Norvan LD3s the lace garage is a great feature. I've found Arc'teryx shoes run large generally. I wear a 6 in street shoes, 6.5 in other runners, and a 5.5 for the Norvan and Sylans. There is ample room for foot swelling even sized down. Cannot speak to durability yet as they are still fairly new, but I am impressed with the build and materials.

Fits BIG!

You will need to downsize by at least a full size. I always wear 6.5 across all brands, but due to width and length in design, I am needing a 5.5. Overall, the shoe fits comfortably and is a great option for running on trails and uneven loose gravel. However, this wouldn't be my go-to pavement running shoe.

Great shoe - can really feel the propulsion

Super excited to try out the Sylan trail running shoe - Arcteryx designed the midsole of these shoes to give you an extra boost as you run. At first I thought I wouldn't like it - but I genuinely feel the lift and push I'm getting with each stride. The shoes didn't need any break in period, and were really comfortable on trail. These do run a little long. I am usually a size 8.5 and I probably should have gotten a size 8 in the Sylans.

Great all-round trail shoe

These are my go-to shoes when hitting the trails. Be it rougher ground or smoother gravel paths. They are super comfortable (even when the feet swell in hot conditions / on longer runs) and nicely cushioned for longer downhills too which is quite important when running ultras. Also really like the shoe lace "garage" which means I never have to re-tie my laces while running!
