Versatile, Lightweight, Warm. A Go-To Mid Layer.

The Proton Hoody is easily one of my favorite Arc’teryx pieces - and for good reason. It’s impressively lightweight, yet still warm, breathable, and incredibly comfortable. At 5’9” and 170 lbs, the size M fits me perfectly: not too snug, not too loose, and the sleeve length is spot on.
It’s been a fantastic mid-layer for skiing, and recently I’ve been using it under a light rain shell for my daily commute in ~30°F weather - it performs really well in both situations. The color (Tatsu) is great too - subtle but stylish.
I haven’t worn it as a standalone outer layer yet, and haven’t tested it with a backpack, so I can’t speak to how it holds up or if it pills over time with that kind of wear. But so far, it’s been excellent.
Highly recommended if you’re looking for a versatile, dependable layer.

Sizing completely wrong

I'm 6'3 210 lbs and the XL is to big for me, the new skirt hits the middle of my hamstring, the slim fit looks more like a loose/baggy fit. I was hoping to wear this jacket while touring, but the dimensions don't give me confidence for my days in the mountains. I tried on the L in store and it was extremely tight, so I figure it out the XL will fit me right like all my arcteryx jacket that I own (thorium, sabre, beta ar, atom sl, squamish). I don't understand, there seems to be a size missing between the L and XL. I wish I kept my old Proton, it seemed more robust and suitable for mountain outings. Cannot return it, I give it a chance out there, but didn't pass the test.

Another tool in the tool box

I mean it’s an Arc’teryx jacket, they fit great, supper comfortable, well wearing and protective.
This is one of many in my arsenal of Arc’teryx gear. I also have the atom LT and this one is heavier with a lower back than the atom.

The workhorse

It's a rare day when a proton doesn't make its way into my backpack. Breathable enough to skin in on a cold day, warm enough to use as a belay jacket, and burly enough to climb in if you need to! And even with all that abuse it still lasts for years.

For those who are new to breathable insulation, this will feel like a Godsend. For those who are spoiled by the old Proton LT/FL, this will be a mixed bag.
I've used the proton since 2015 (LT with 40D Fortius fabric) and every year it has gotten better until this year. It's not all bad, the looser fit put me solidly in size medium, I was in between size before. The longer fit is better for skiing in the spring since it helps keep the snow out. That's about where it ended.
I've only had this latest revision for 2-3 months and I am avoiding it in favor of my old proton. The long hem at the back goes almost past my buttock which is even further than some of my waterproof shell. Combine that with how it wet out much easier now that I will occasionally hang this jacket to dry in the sun. The front hem is also longer and notice it bunchs up way more than the old version when I kneel.
I was kind of disappointed to see that during the spring of 2025, they didn't have a new revision to correct some of these issues, so I thought I would write a review.

Breathable & warm, but worried about durability

Bought this for use as a mid-layer at the end of Jan this year. Loving the fit and breathability of the jacket. Keeps me warm under a GoreTex shell even in -20C, but doesn’t get too hot when things warm up. I’m quite disappointed however, that I’ve had this for one month and the jacket is already showing signs of wear and the material is pilling under the armpits. I’m using it for resort skiing and as a light jacket around town, and not using a backpack. Kind of blown away that a jacket at this price point is showing this kind of wear with a month of light use.

Breathable enough for a wide range of temps

Absolutely love this jacket. I basically live in it from October - March so I'm buying two more so I can rotate the stock and get them in the wash periodically. It looks great and breathes so well that I can leave it on as I move throughout my day. Love the long, trim cut and long sleeves.

Disappointed - Sizing Change ?

Did the sizing change ? Seems to be really long in the Torso, compared to all my other Arcteryx coats. Bummer, Arcteryx was my consistant go to for fit, but lately i've had to return all the newer models that i've ordered.

While the Medium size remains unchanged, smaller sizes are now a bit tighter and larger sizes looser, which might explain the longer torso you’ve noticed.
