I totally agree with Kenneth.  Removing the full length zipper on the legs makes no sense.  I am a backpacker and if I can’t remove my pants or put my pants on without taking off my hiking boots these are of no use to me.  I have numerous Arcteryx garments including several fleece jackets and a Beta AR jacket, all of which I am very pleased with.  I wanted a pair of GoreTex pants, but not until there is a full length zipper.

No side zips was worse than I thought

il y a 2 ans
Bought these pants for an upcoming trip and wanted something durable enough to stand up to a month of abuse, unfortunately, they seem pretty unusable for my needs. Why make a shell pant that's impossible to put on over a normal hiking boot? Forget mountaineering boots with crampons, I can barely get them off with my normal boots on. No one wants to have to put on a shell pant in their tent in the morning and remain trapped in them for the rest of the day. I could see them being appropriate for a single day summit where the weather is poor all day or similar alpine activities but that seems like a pretty narrow window of usefulness for a $500 product that is supposed to be versatile and made for a variety of weather conditions. I would love to buy a gore-tex pro pant from you guys that has full zips.

Removal of side zips was a bad decision

il y a 2 ans
Alpine environments you will have crampons and boots on. You need 3/4 or full side zips to get these on over your boots and crampons. No point in buying this product without such a critical feature. These are completely unusable as a packable items and must be put on in the morning before a climb. Scratching my head at the decision to remove the zips....had to return them and buy from another brand .

Is full zip gone for now?

il y a 2 ans
I was waiting for new Beta AR pant, but it surprises me lack of full zip in new release. If there is a Beta SV pant coming out with full zip, thats great, but if there is no updated pant option in Alpha/Beta SV/AR series with full zip then I am surprised and dissapointed. Last release of Beta AR pants just needed the plastic buckle updated, now we have a completly new pant. Long lived used gear e-commerce. It can appriciated the lack of full zip pant as option, but I still will want to have a full zip AR/SV pant handy beside full zip Beta SV BIBS, which I love so much.

Easy to pack protection

il y a 2 ans
Everything you need (dry, rugged, intuitive adjustment, lightweight, packable), and nothing that you don't (apparently pockets). They pack down tiny, so I always have them with me. They have a great fit, and are really tough. They've stood up to more scraping on rocks than could be expected. If only there were pockets.

Generally well built trousers

il y a 2 ans
No true issues - they are hard wearing, comfortable, and practically designed trousers. An absolute cornerstone of my winter and summer mountaineering. Lost one star as the undergaiters/snowshields that attach at the bottom (may be an old model!) are quite flimsy compared to the rest, so you have to be a bit dainty putting them on sometimes. Not a dealbreaker and I'd buy again, but a bit of a mis-step considering the rest of the pant being 10/10

Beware of Sizing

il y a 2 ans
I bought these pants to replace my Arc'teryx bibs that have worn out. I am 5'11" and 175lbs. Every pair of pants I own is a medium size and my waist is 33". These medium sized pants were too small at the waist and very tight in the mid section. Also the pocket config is bid weird. Just one pocket on the leg.

Huge step backward

I owned the previous version of these pants and loved them. They were the only 'long' pants I could find and they worked very well. However, the new version removed the full side zip. What?! I am now expected to take my boots off to put these on when the weather turns bad? Don't pay $500 for these.

Nice pants, for high-cut hiking boots.

il y a 3 ans
As a backpacker, winter hiker, snowshoer and backcountry split boarder, my first impression of the Beta AR pants was mixed. Obviously high quality with a nice built-in waist belt, but the ankle cuff — consisting of a zippered gauntlet and adjustable internal gaiter/snow skirt — seemed busy. Too much added weight/bulk. More features that could potentially malfunction. So far I’ve tried wearing the pants with several different pairs of boots: low-cut leather hikers, high-cut insulated hikers, snowboard boots and heavy-duty mountaineering boots. The gauntlet, as it turns out, slides perfectly over the tops of my snowboard boots. Thus, when packing my split board up to the alpine in my high-cut hikers, I can zip close the gauntlet and cinch shut the snow skirt when crossing through shallow, or even moderately deep, patches of snow without worries. Of course, the gauntlet and snow-skirt are fairly useless when combined with low-cut hikers during summer. The snow skirt, I imagine, will constantly ride up the boots and eventually bunch up at the tops, so it would probably be best to leave them loose. Paired with anything less than high-cut hiking boots, the Beta AR pants’ adjustable gauntlet and built-in snow skirt are useless. In terms of weight, the Beta AR’s are heavier than most hiking-specific Gore-Tex rain pants, approximately 100 to 200 grams heavier, but far more versatile. They can be worn for extended periods of time, used year round and were, in fact, designed for all-round (AR) use. Ultralight and weight-conscious backpackers, who will likely have no use for the gauntlet and snow-skirt, should keep this in mind before buying the Beta AR model.

$500 and no full length side zipper?

il y a 3 ans
The title of this review says it all. Given the price of this item there is ZERO excuse for Arcteryx not including a full length side zipper. Am I expected to take off my hiking boots to put these on and off? This one is going straight back to the where I bought it from. Severely disappointed.

Mountaineering/Snow Pants, not suitable for AR Use

il y a 3 ans
I had these pants for less than five seasons before they got trashed and needed to be replaced. With such a high price, and being marketed as one of Arcteryx’s burliest and most durable pants, I’m quite disappointed with these pants. I’ve tried to summarize my issues below. Marketing: First of all, the “AR” in these pants stands for “All Around” use. Based on the weight, fit, features, and materials (which I will get into below), I really feel that these pants would better labeled as “Severe Weather” (SV) , mountaineering, or ski/snowboarding pants. They definitely seem inappropriate/overkill for most of the hiking and trekking I used them. Weight: As you can probably guess, there is always a trade off between weight and durability. At almost half a kg, these are the heaviest rain pants in the Arcteryx lineup. If you were to fold them in half and roll them up, they would be larger than a Nalgene bottle. If you plan on wearing these often on your trip this may not be a problem. If not, you are going to be walking around with a half kg brick of “emergency rain pants” in your bag, which takes up a lot of space. There are lighter, cheaper, less bulky options that would be better suited for “all around” use. Fit: Some items are designed to be used alone or as a mid layer (and are more form fitting/slim), whereas other items are more loose fitting and designed to be used with multiple layers. These pants fall into the latter category. They are described as “regular” fitting but “baggy” would be a better word in my opinion. If you are going to be using these in cold weather with a base and mid layer, then this might be ok. If you want to just throw these over your hiking shorts/pants, they seem a bit baggy. In particular, the cuff at the ankle is very wide, which tells me these would be better suited for use with mountaineering/ski boots than hiking shoes/boots. These wide cuffs will drag under your boots and get caught on branches, and end up getting shredded, like mine did. Side Zips: I get that these are designed to vent heat and cool you down. However, if you’re hiking in deep snow or heavy rain, you don’t want moisture dripping/splashing in via the side zips. Similarly, if it’s early morning and there’s condensation on plants (or it recently finished raining), then all the moisture is going right into these side zips if you hike with them open and brush past grass or a bush. If it’s raining, wear them with the side zips up. If it’s not raining or you’re hot, switch back to your normal pants/shorts. For me side zips on (any) rain pants were a feature on these pants I really never used. Just my two cents. Crampon Patch: Again, for “all around” use, why would a bulky/heavy crampon patch be needed? If you are doing a lot of hiking in crampons, then this is a very useful feature but for three season use, they just add weight and bulk. Like I said, these should be marketed as “Severe Weather” (SV), mountaineering, or ski/snowboarding pants if they have this feature. Internal Snow Gaiter: For me, in terms of features, this would be my biggest gripe. Like the crampon patch issue above, this seems overkill for “all around use”. In my experience, this feature was just another set of zippers, cinch cords, and buttons I had to waste time with when putting these pants on, and be honest, it didn’t work as well as a normal set of external gaiters. Also, when putting these on, you must be very careful. If your boot or foot catches on this and you push down to hard, you run the risk of ripping these right out from inside the pants. The additional time and care required to put these on makes them a hassle if you are hiking and it starts raining and you need to get your rain pants on in a hurry. Lastly, the seam where the internal gaiter attached to the pants delaminated on both sides of my pants. If there is moisture/dirt getting inside to cause this delamination, what do you think is happening to your socks and shoes? Durability/Breathability: I’ll preface this section by saying I had the older version of these pants which used the Gore Tex Pro material, not their newer “most rugged” material, which may have solved some of the issues I am about to list. First of all, these pants are made with Arcteryx’s burliest, strongest, heaviest N80D material. So that does mean that these pants will be heavy and will have that “crinkly” noise that some people find annoying. It also means these pants are not terrible breathable (see side zipper issue above). Despite all this, my pants still sustained multiple rips, punctures, and tears. I suppose this could be attributed to how I used them or chalked up to “wear and tear”, but at almost $500USD, I’m really quit disappointed at the durability of these pants, especially for bushwhacking or going off trail. Delamination Issues: This is probably the number one issue I had with these pants, and is the single reason I am hesitant to buy these pants again (or any other arcteryx gore tex product for that matter). Delamination can occur along a taped seam/drawstring, or along the actual face of the fabric. These pants suffered both issues. The snow collar came loose inside the leg and the fabric itself has bubbling/blistering all over it, essentially rendering these pants not waterproof. I filed a product service request and once I was contacted (several weeks late I might add), Arcteryx basically said that because the pants had dirt on them in the picture I sent them (I didn’t wash them before, my mistake), they used some lame excuse that “dirt” on pants is automatically signifies that the aforementioned dirt is the root cause of the delamination across the entire garment (had I washed them, this may not have been the case). They kept using the word “contaminated”, as if dirt on the fabric face is indicative of overall permeation. A pretty lame response and defense of their product, especially given the high cost of these “3 layer” rain pants and having to wait almost a month for a response. I guess the N80D fabric on these isn’t quite as waterproof and durable as they advertise since dirt gets through so easily. As a consolation I did end up getting a coupon code, which I obviously won’t be using on another pair of these pants. **Pro tip: Make sure you wash you garment before sending in any pictures against a product request warranty (especially delamination), otherwise the dirt will be the scapegoat of your issue and you won’t get your product repaired/replaced under warranty. I am still a fan of their gear and will continue to buy (some of) them, but I won’t be using my coupon code to buy another pair of Beta AR pants (and possibly not any more gore tex gear based on how I was treated with these). Unless you are using these pants for the purposes I listed above I simply cannot recommend these pants for general hiking/trekking/all around (AR) use.

The short version is never available

il y a 3 ans
It’s so disappointing that the pants are never available in their short version. After browsing this site I place an order for the short version when it became available. But after two weeks of waiting the the customer support is telling me that they can’t fulfill the order because it’s out of stock. Please get more short. Not everyone in the world is 6ft.

Can’t put on when wearing boots

il y a 3 ans
Bought two weeks ago and tried them out during a week hiking in Wales and going caving. Couldn’t believe I couldn’t put them on without taking my boots off. I wouldn’t have bought them for this reason alone and feel a bit silly for not reading the reviews in more detail before buying. Great when wearing but the designers must have either had a good reason for doing this or been asleep at the wheel. I wouldn’t buy these again.

Why change the side-zip??

il y a 3 ans
Fit: As a tall lanky man (6"2"- 175 lbs), Arc'teryx medium (regular fit) fits pretty darn well, just a little short, but since I'm mostly climb in these I don't mind. I now have a medium (tall fit) and it's almost too long, but I guess the longer pant will protect my footwear from pointy things a bit better than the regular fit, and as it's easier to patch the pant than boots, I suppose that's a positive. If you're used to the previous version of this pant, a few things you need to know before replacing them with these newer ones. Feel: the shell material on the newer ones feel more supple than the previous ones. Pocket: the pocket now has down-facing zipper cover and is now over the thigh and a bit lower instead of being higher up and closer to the hip -> this eliminates friction/wear on the pocket part of the pants if you have things (i.e., phone) in your pocket. But now if you have things in your pocket, the whole pocket tends to bobble a bit more against your leg when your moving fast. Side-zip: Previous version were excellent alpine pants and had a nice 3/4 zip so I could take them on and off with boots on. These new ones have two separate side-zips on each leg that don't connect (i.e., can't take them on and off with boots on). I just don't understand why Arc'teryx had to go and ruin a great alpine pant.

Cant take them off without taking boots off

il y a 3 ans
I've done epic wilderness adventures all around the world, Nepal, Peru, Swiss Alps, Patagonia you name it I've been there. I mistakenly assumed Arcteryx would have designed the Beta AR for all round use as advertised in the name. One example of many ... I am on a 5 day hiking tour 2 days in it starts to rain when I'm hiking. I pull out my new $600 pants. Can't get them on without taking my hiking boots off (the ankles are to narrow) why did you put fabric at the bottom where the zipper is that makes the pants wider but not wide enough to slide over your hikers? Now I'm in the rain need to sit down in the wet pull my hikers off put my gortex pants on then put my hikers back on. Then 2 hrs later the rain stops! Guess what. I have to do it all over again in reverse. I am so disappointed in this purchase. These are not designed for all-round outdoor use. How did the designers not think of this important and necessary feature? I bought the Beta AR pants 8 years ago and they were so epic. They had 3/4 length zipper from the hip down to the ankles that was so perfect for so many reasons. Now you have a zipper at the hip to the knee and then one from mid calf to the ankle but you can't open the pants up wide enough to get more than a running shoe through there.

Where is the continuous zipper from last year? How

Where is the continuous zipper from last year? How to put on these pants when you already wear hiking boots? Last version had a continuous zipper all the way up to your hip. That worked great. Why have you changed the style of the zipper?

Great fit for the taller person

I bought these for winter use. Having long legs I found the tall option give me a great fit compared to other brands. They are well made and keep me dry whilst working in the mountains whatever the weather. A great pair of pants!

Easy In Easy Out

il y a 3 ans
Not only does this keep you dry and warmer during the cold winter season it's full length side zippers make it easy to put on and take off while wearing pants and shoes/ski-boots. While wearing pants underneath the Beta AR didn't feel like it was restricting my leg movements at al and only after a few minutes it felt like I was only wearing one layer of pants. I also love the added protection down on the lower cuffs making it more durable.

Difficult to size

il y a 4 ans
I received these pants for Xmas and normally wear a medium size. I am 5’8”, 175lbs and 33 inch waist. I found the medium was tight and certainly no room for any insulation layer. The pants are thin and requires an underlay for winter activities. I ordered the large and found they were much too big and baggy. The sizing goes from one extreme to the other. I ended up returning both pairs due to sizing. As for the quality they seem like top notch light Gore Tex shell pants.

Design change fail - no more full side zips

Big mountains demand flexibility to don a hard-shell over boots and crampons. Unclear on who the target market is for this re-design. Seems like the Arc'teryx design team needs to get out on some mountains and figure out what clothing designs are needed.

Try the Beta SLs. The ARs are designed as all-day pants worn over your base layer. Beta SLs are the pull-on over your softshell version for situational use.

Unfailing rain pants

il y a 4 ans
Several years into my $500 rain pants endeavor and I could not be happier. These pants are heavy and don't pack great, so be aware. Very durable, I work and hike in these pants. A couple years ago I stepped up onto a trailer and a bolt end caught the pants and ripped a hole in them. Later that same winter I cut them a little bit with a pruning saw. Sent the pants in and they were patched; completely repaired, cost $100. Wash them; buy the fancy soap and spray treatment stuff. They fit well when wearing a harness.

Previous design more all around user friendly.

il y a 4 ans
I purchased the previous design of beta ar pants because it had a 3/4 leg zipper. It was very convenient for hiking because you did not have to remove your foot wear to put on the pants or remove the pants. If the weather turned bad it was easy to put on your pants quickly and efficiently without taking your boots off. Unfortunately I had a warranty issue with my pants and I sent them in for repair and it was defective so arcteryks sent me the new model which fit really well. The only down side was that now the zipper does not unzip all the way making it hard to put the pants on in bad weather without removing foot wear. And same when weather gets better you have to stop sit down and remove footwear to take beta pants off. It would be nice to see a full zip again to make the versatility of the pants better.

Water leaking through pocket after one hike

il y a 4 ans
I bought these pants a few years ago but first wore them during my summer holiday in July. This was in Swedish Lappland in the Scandinavian mountains and it was super rainy. After the first day I arrive at my tent and took out my passport from the pocket and it was completely soaked. When I returned from my trip I sent them in for repair, but after assessing my pants, Arc'teryx claimed "This is not covered under warranty as it is an accidental damage/wrong use or care of the pocket". As an avid Arc'teryx customer who also owns the Beta AR jacket, the Alpha SV jacket, and the Cerium LT jacket, I am wholly disappointed in the lack of support offered for a malfunctioning product. They are not standing behind their promise.

Customer Service
Hi There, Thank you for reaching out to Arc'teryx and sharing your experience with the Beta AR Pant. We regret the time you have had with your Beta AR pant and that they did not meet your expectations. In the case of your particular pants, there appears to have been contamination of the Gore-Tex which may have lead to it failing. This can happen over time if the Gore-Tex has not been cared for in accordance with the care instructions. You can learn more about caring for your Gore-tex items here: https://arcteryx.com/ca/en/help/product-care?intcmp=product-care Also, our WaterTight™ zippers on our shell jackets and pants are highly water-resistant, but not waterproof. We do not recommend keeping items in your pockets that may be damaged by moisture. If you have any other comments or concerns about this or any other products, our Customer Support Line is still here to help, and we welcome any open dialogue. All the best.

Where are the full zippers?!?

il y a 4 ans
I've had the Beta AR Pant for a couple of years, used in in rough alpine terrains all-year incl. skiing, icecliming, mountaineering and city biking to work. Now it's time to replace the pant. But what do I see now?! NO LONG SIDE ZIPPERS any more! No, no, no! The biggest advantage of the pant was the possibility to put it on/off without putting on/off (ski/hiking) boots. And of course the full ventilation. This is a huge disappointment since Arcteryx ist one of the few manufacturers that produces a wide product range in short/tall versions. Besides that: great pant!
