Not for ice climbing

I bought this for ice climbing and will be returning. Bought because arc'teryx doesn't have any technical softshell pants for climbing in alpine environments. You don't need hardshell for ice climbing. It's too restrictive for climbing ice. The one pocket is hindered by a flap that only opens on one side. The integrated gators do not go up very high and do not have a clasp to latch onto your laces. There is no belt loop, so the belt flaps around a bunch. May not be a problem, but if you have a small waist and bigger hips, it will be. Pros? Reinforced inner lower leg to resist punctures from crampons. Suspenders. Go ahead and purchase some hardshell or softshell pants from Mammut instead.

No separating side zips

I was glad to see that finally some women’s pants are available in a ‘Tall’ version, however, I’ve always preferred pants that have the 3/4 side zips. They can be carried in the bottom of my pack and fished out when needed to put on over top of soft shell pants while wearing ski boots. Although the description said zippers to aid in getting them on, there is no way these will go on while wearing ski boots. Disappointed that the ones with 3/4 zippers are no longer available. Am returning them, despite the lovely long leg length.

I was also disappointed that I could not get these pants (Short version in my case) on and off over my hiking boots. Seems like a real miss on the part of Arcteryx.

Amazing Pants for Skiing and Mountain Climbing

I wanted to get pants that I could use for multiple snow-based activities, and the Beta AR absolutely delivers! These pants are perfect for skiing as well as higher altitude mountain climbing and trekking. I love that they have straps - it's really nice to not have to worry about my pants moving around when I am skiing. Some pants I have worn from other brands I have had to wear a belt to prevent sagging, so having these straps was a huge plus! One less thing I have to worry about! I love that they are waterproof and windproof. They are perfect for all of the elements, which you definitely encounter in the mountains! These pants fit true to size. Make sure to try them on with base layers so you get a perfect fit for when you are out in the elements. I am 5'3 and 100 pounds, and fit into an XS.

Solid Technical Pant

I like this pant because I can wear it over a couple pairs of long underwear or even overly climbing pants in a pinch (note: I am 5.7 and have a medium, so if you like a trimmer fit, go for a smaller size) It offers enough room to move fully so when I'm ice climbing it doesn't hinder me in a squat or a stem which is hard to achieve in a Gore-tex shell. It certainly is waterproof and has all the features (cuff guard, side zips, thigh pocket) that make it a reliable technical winter pant. I personally like the fit. Its trim but roomy enough.
Q: Pros:
A: side zip and thigh pocket
Q: Cons:
A: cuff guards feel stiff
Q: Activity
A: Ice climbing, hiking

Yes, I recommend this product.

Height inclusivity

Height inclusivity is a topic that doesn’t get talked about... I hate it when I’m forced to say “I’m too short so this item is not for me, I’m too short so this sport is not for me, Im too short so this career is not for me, blah blah I’m too short to exist in this world” when in reality the opportunities are just not quite there yet. Anyways onto the review, a whole lot of the pants are not petite friendly, the knees and the crotch are not positioned at the right spots and etc. When there is is a ‘short’ option there’s almost always no stock...the shirts and jacket are like dresses for me so I end up rolling the sleeves or the bottom of the pants. For someone who sports femininity & performance together, it doesn’t really show with any of my arc outfits. No sane person would try to get goretex pants or jackets tailored.
Q: Pros:
A: Removable suspenders
Q: Cons:
A: Lack of inventory
Q: Activity
A: Alpine, Ice Climbing, Skiing

Yes, I recommend this product.

Great quality

I just bought these in small (I'm 5'7", ~125 pounds on good days) and wanted to leave a review re: sizing. They fit great for someone of my height but I can see how the inseam would be too long for most people under 5'6" (unless you have very long legs compared to your torso of course). They otherwise seem very durable and of good quality!
Q: Pros:
A: Quality, side zips, breathability
Q: Cons:
A: Sizing if petite

Yes, I recommend this product.

So Wanted to Like!!

I so wanted to love these pants because I get cold in the winter and I also wanted a pant to accompany my Arc'teryx Alpha AR Jacket for winter snow backpacking. I am a slim backpacker who hikes in all kinds of conditions (5'5" 95#). Arc'teryx is one of the remaining brands that carried sizes small enough for me. I usually can wear the smallest size and have it be a little big. Unfortunately these xs pants are so big, when I tighten the waist as tight as possible, they fall off and both legs can easily fit in each pant leg with room to spare (I tried them on with double baselayer pants on). I wish the sizing were more consistent throughout Arc'teryx clothing. I don't care what size it says on my clothes, I just want to be able to find clothes that (somewhat) fit. Unfortunately, I have also contacted Arc'teryx and they are discontinuing many of their smallest sizes. Yes I would recommend these pants to someone ... just beware of sizing and do not get stuck on what size you should be. They are, like all Arc'teryx items, extremely well made.

I wholeheartedly agree with you on sizing!  I wish their XS is really XS.  I am 5'7' and 120 lb and I tried several Arc'teryx pants that still come in XS, only to find they were too big.  Beta SV pants have everything functional I need, but I know I will not be able to use them without suspenders because they fall down!  With the ones with numerical sizing (0-12), I could use size 0; according to their sizing chart, "size 0" is smaller than XS.

Perfect shell pant.

These pants are perfect. I have a very versatile outdoor lifestyle that previously required that I have several pairs of snow pants but these pants do it all. I use them for back country skiing, and snow camping, daily work outside, and daily dog walking and hiking. They are technical enough and roomy enough for backcountry. I was comfy in -40 high wind this winter. They are attractive enough that I feel awesome walking my dog in a public dog park, and look good when I have to run into the grocery store on the way home. I don't know how it's possible but they fit trim enough to look nice but roomy enough to fit base layers for the extreme cold. The breathability is unbelievable. We have transitioned into spring now with cold nights and warm afternoons; the snow is the worst. I have never been so comfortable. The full side zips allow me to slip them on over boots. The bottoms cinch in so they look good when you don't have ski boots on. There's not alot of pockets but I like that since that makes them better at keeping me dry. Since I started buying Arcteryx I need less gear because each piece is so versatile. I would have saved a ton of money if I had started with this brand. I am 5'3", 145 pounds and I order M short. Perfect fit.

Best Shell Pant

I bought these pants for my wife for Christmas last year. She has found them to be excellent! The fit is what she loves the most. She has found no other shell pant to be this comfortable. They are just loose enough for effective layering, but not so baggy that she catches her crampons. She is 5'6" tall, weighs 130 pounds and the small size is perfect. The feature-full pant has everything she needs. Her favourite feature is the waterproof full zip legs. The ability to change layers without removing boots or crampons is essential. With these pants, it's easy. The durability of these pants has been put to the test and have passed with flying colours. After a year of abuse, the pants are still going strong! Overall, these have been one of the best purchases I could have made for her. The Beta AR pants have quickly become her favourite piece of kit!

Short inseam too long and no XS in Short!

Just bought these trousers and feels hard wearing - first impressions is that its a good design overall. However, when I tried them on they were a terrible fit. I got these in the 'SS' (Short/ Small) and the inseams are long. The short inseam is 30.5 inches which is long for a 'short'!! Petite leg lengths are usually 28 inches so this is not 'short' unless you are 5'4" and taller. Also, my waist is 27 inches so I wasn't able to order XS in Short as the only size for Short is Small, which means the hips are far too big for me. I am 5'2" and have tried these trousers with various boots/ shoes for walking and hiking... and they sit too long, buckling and gathering around the ankles. For the price of these trousers I would prefer a nice fit, not sitting wide around my hips and gathering around my ankles. Please can someone in Arcteryx come up with a better design for the small and petite climbers/ hikers out there.
Q: Activity
A: Hiking and Climbing
Consshort inseam needs to be shorter (e.g. 28 inches)

I could not agree more with this comment. As an *average-height* woman of 5'5", I have such a hard time finding ski pants that fit properly and find it frustrating that being of average height and proportional legs (29.5" inseam), I have to special-order a short length. Time and time again, companies like Arc'teryx gloss over comments like this and fail to deliver. Please *actually* listen to your athletes, Arc'teryx.

Best and only pant with almost full zip on side!

I love these pants!!!!!! I am on my second pair after 10 years with the last pair. (I ski upward of 75 days a year.) The full zips are critical for air while backcountry skiing/climbing and as I have to wear double knee braces the braces are easy to put on before and remove after skiing each day. I hope you NEVER stop making these pants!!!!!!

Love these

I love these pants. I use them for non technical hikes in the Canadian Arctic. They definitely live up to their waterproof claims and fit really well aside from the long leg length. They are great wind pants and I have found that I am comfortable wearing them with an insulating layer up to -40. They are also very durable. I echo other comments about providing options for those of us with short legs. I am 5 feet and 5 inches tall and have very short legs. I am constantly tucking these up to avoid dragging them on the ground. It is difficult for us short people to find good quality gear that fits...

The Go To Big Mountain Pants

These pants come with me on all big mountain exploits. They have stood up to harsh elements with ease. I love the full length side zips, which allow me to accommodate my mountaineering boots without taking them off. On objectives where I am gaining a lot of elevation, I slide this in my pack and start off the approach in a baselayer. When the temps dip and wind picks up, these fit right over everything. The gusseted crotch allows freedom of movement when high stepping and bonus - they are perfect for glissading.

Too long

I am 5"2, 115 lbs. I can usually get by with XS, but these are way to long, even with ski boots. It is really disappointing not to have the option of short, given these are high-end pants. At that price ( 550CAD) I expect a much better fit, especially that its not possible to get them tailored (with the side zip + warranty will not apply if item is modified I was told in store). Browsing through the comments I can see that this issue was raised already 2 years ago but unfortunately is not resolved.

Great pants, great service

I thought these pants would be too substantial and stiff to wear comfortably over base layer and my soft shells. But they slid on easily over two layers and seemed to be sized for that expectation. I do a lot of work on my knees in the snow, setting and digging out deadman stakes, and these kept the wet out perfectly. I could take them off at night, store them in the snow-floored vestibule, and put them on in the morning as pliable as ever. They are tough enough for snowshoeing, but soft enough to be comfortable. I'm very glad I overcame my initial doubts and got them. Acrteryx makes it easy to return items for a better fit, with very fast shipping speeds and included return labels.

Love these pants! Wish I had bought them years ago

I have used these pants in the worst downpours North Vancouver has to offer and I stayed 100% dry. They are pricey but well worth it when everyone else is slowly getting wet and you are bone dry. Hiking in these pants is great. They are super breathable and I love the little clip that holds the pants to my shoelaces. No more water dripping down into my shoes :-) After I come home they are dry in a heartbeat. I have also worn these cycle commuting since the articulated fit is very flexible. Love the side zips for when the rain lets up but I can't be bothered to stop and take them off. I am normally a size 6; the small was a quite snug so I bumped it up to a medium since I wanted to bike with them as well. Medium is rather roomy but the waist cinch helps. They look a bit baggy due to the articulated fit and the fact they are a bit big on me but the fit is extremely functional. Wouldn't change a thing! Great job as usual. You guys rock.

great all-around pant!

I use this pant to do everything from snowboarding to hiking. The side zipper ensures easy removal over my crampons when hiking and helps to remove excess heat when my body temperature is up! The powder cuff does an excellent job in keeping the snow out when riding powder on my snowboard. In addition, the adjustable belt helps keep the pants in place (no snow going down by butt!)
