Speed and confidence don't often go hand in hand on technical mountain terrain. But that's exactly what we set out to achieve with the Sylan 2 trail running shoe. As Arc'teryx's footwear design director Chris Pope explains, this shoe represents our commitment to helping runners crush FKTs, dominate race day, or simply nail their training routes with unprecedented performance.

Building on a Fast Foundation

The original Sylan established itself as a genuinely fast shoe. For the Sylan 2, we pushed further. The goal wasn't just speed anymore. It was speed with confidence on technical terrain where every detail matters.

Technical mountain running demands an unobstructed experience. This fundamental insight shaped the entire silhouette and informed the midsole geometry. When you're moving fast over challenging terrain, nothing can get in your way.

The Three-Layer Speed System

The Sylan 2's performance comes from a carefully engineered three-layer midsole system:

Layer 1: Supercritical Foam Drop-In The foundation layer delivers responsiveness and energy return. This Supercritical processed foam provides the bounce and propulsion needed for sustained speed.

Layer 2: Carbon Composite Plate Positioned between the foam layers, this plate serves a specific purpose: stability. It keeps your foot secure and controlled even when the terrain gets unpredictable.

Layer 3: Supercritical Foam Carrier The outer carrier creates the chassis that holds everything together. This Supercritical processed layer completes the system and provides the structural integrity the shoe needs.

Together, these three ingredients create a midsole that doesn't compromise. You get the energy return for speed and the stability for confidence.

Sculpted for Performance and Beauty

Look at the midfoot area and you'll notice something distinctive: a sculpted profile that serves dual purposes. Yes, it looks beautiful. But more importantly, it shaves off weight without sacrificing structural integrity. Every gram matters when you're chasing speed.

An Outsole That Sheds Mud

Lug design might seem straightforward, but it requires careful consideration. We align every outsole pattern with its specific use and environment.

The Sylan 2 features notably spaced-out lugs compared to its predecessor. This wasn't an aesthetic choice. It was a functional one based on real-world feedback. Closely spaced lugs hold onto mud, which creates two problems:

  • Added weight that slows you down
  • Diminished traction when you need it most

While the pattern might look like a simple collection of dots, every single angle has been meticulously calculated. The spacing allows mud to clear naturally, keeping the shoe light and maintaining consistent grip.

An Upper That Breathes and Holds

Athletes need two things from an upper: a secure, snug hold and excellent breathability. These requirements can conflict, but engineered woven material gave us the solution.

The woven construction allows for zonal engineering. We placed breathability exactly where runners need it most, preventing overheating during intense efforts. At the same time, we aligned all the fibers with the lacing system. This creates a lockdown effect that keeps your foot secure without pressure points or slippage.

High breathability zones are strategically positioned to ensure proper ventilation without compromising structure. Your foot stays cool and controlled.

The Iteration Process

Creating the Sylan 2 wasn't straightforward. The development process required five to six different iterations before we achieved the right balance. Each version taught us something new about how the components interact and how runners respond to subtle changes.

The goal throughout was integration. We didn't want any single component to stand out or dominate the experience. Instead, every element needed to work as part of a cohesive system.

A Natural Feel at High Speed

The ultimate test of the Sylan 2 is simple: does it feel natural? Does it make you want to run?

When all the parts come together properly, the technology fades into the background. You're not thinking about the carbon plate or the lug spacing or the engineered woven upper. You're just running fast with confidence on technical terrain.

That's the essence of the Sylan 2. It's our fastest trail offering, designed for runners who refuse to choose between speed and security on demanding mountain routes. Every detail, from the sculpted midsole to the mud-shedding outsole, exists to help you move faster with greater confidence.

The result is a shoe that feels like it was meant to be. Fast, confident, and ready for whatever the trail throws at you.
