The Best Men's Snowboard Jacket | Buyer's Guide

Whether you’re a rookie chairlift rider, park rat fiend, or a seasoned backcountry expert, snowboarding is all about finding freedom and joy in unrestricted movement, and your gear should help you get there. From snow-capped alpine peaks to powder-choked bowls, your snowboarding jacket should keep you warm and dry while still being light, breathable, and flexible.

Is GORE-TEX really worth the hype? What makes a jacket good for snowboarding specifically? What other gear do you need? Where do you even begin to look? This guide will break down the most important considerations to help you find the best men's snowboard jacket for you, including factors like waterproofing, breathability, mobility, and layering.

Want to skip right to the goods? Shop all of our favorite snowboarding jackets here.

Why Is GORE-TEX So Important for Snowboarding Jackets?

Over sixty years ago, Bill Gore quit his job after discovering the benefits of working with synthetic polymer PTFE (polymer polytetrafluoroethylene). With the help of his son Bob, GORE-TEX was born, and it’s now hard to imagine adventuring in the alpine without it.

The Evolution of Snowboarding Jackets

This wonder material was seemingly made for snowboarding deep powder stashes in frigid mountain conditions, which is why Arc’teryx works with GORE-TEX to make the world’s best snowboard jackets that are ultra-strong, waterproof, windproof, and breathable.

GORE-TEX Technology Explained

There are nine billion pores in each square inch of GORE-TEX, each one 20,000 times smaller than a drop of water. In short, with waterproof ratings exceeding 25,000mm, no water is getting inside an Arc’teryx snowboarding or ski jacket.

A high waterproof rating is of course crucial for snowboarding in wet conditions, but the lesser-known bonus of GORE-TEX is its breathability. While the tiny pores of GORE-TEX membranes might be 20,000 times smaller than a water droplet, they are still 700 times larger than a water molecule, allowing water vapor like sweat and condensation to escape.

Why GORE-TEX Is a Game-Changer for Riders

Snowboarding is a rough and tumble activity that requires strength, flexibility, and boldness. While Arc’teryx may be famous for being obsessive over our design, we’re not precious about our products. We make the best GORE-TEX snowboard jackets so that you can use them like the tools they’re meant to be.

Built for extreme alpine conditions, Arc’teryx snowboarding jackets provide stormproof protection for all-mountain and backcountry riders. Take, for example, the Beta AR Jacket Stormhood. We collaborated with Gore to make GORE-TEX PRO with the Most Rugged Technology for maximum durability. We know you’re tough. Your jacket should be, too.

Why Choose Arc’teryx as the Best Snowboarding Jacket?

With our commitment to technical innovation and using the best materials, we focus on performance-driven designs that prioritize mobility, warmth, and weather protection. Every Arc’teryx snowboard jacket is designed with a fit that naturally mimics the shape of the human body, and the lightweight insulation and durable waterproofing keep riders warm and dry in the harshest of conditions.

Where Can I Buy the Best Men’s Snowboarding Jackets?

When it comes to gear shopping, it’s good to have options. For some riders, it’s important to try on different jackets in-store to see how they feel and move. Others want the best selection available and a variety of options to choose from. Here are some places to find the best snowboarding jackets.

Local Shops & Authorized Dealers

Every mountain town or city worth its salt has a great little gear shop where you can find Arc’teryx snowboard jackets. And we know the best part of a small shop is the hands-on service you receive. There are few things more valuable than a friendly local gear expert who understands the regional terrain, weather patterns, and specific needs you might have.

Shopping local also allows you to try on different styles and different brands to find the perfect fit. A well-fitting snowboarding or ski jacket is not only more comfortable but it also performs better, allowing you to do the same.

Arc’teryx Outlet Stores

Let’s address the elephant in the room: gear—and especially good gear—can be expensive. That’s where Arc’teryx outlets come in. With both online and brick-and-mortar options, they’re accessible to urban and remote riders alike. From parkas to mid-layers and everything in between, Arc’teryx outlets offer the ability to shop all gear for a fraction of the cost. Be sure to check back often for different snowboard jacket options and deep discounts.

Arc’teryx Retail Stores

Want expert assistance to find the perfect snowboard jacket? Head to your nearest Arc’teryx store. In-store, you’ll find not only a varied selection of the season’s freshest gear but also knowledgeable and friendly staff. Trained in Arc’teryx gear specifically, the staff knows the lineup inside and out, and they can also speak to your specific needs. Get all your questions answered or better yet, tell our gear experts what you’re looking for and let them do the rest. You can also try on different jacket styles and sizes to find your perfect fit.

Arcteryx.com

We know life gets busy and not everyone can make it into a store, which is why the Arc’teryx online store offers free shipping within Canada, the United States, and beyond, as well as free returns. Along with super detailed sizing guides and customer reviews, free shipping and free returns help you order without fear.

Another reason to order online? You get access to everything. The Arc’teryx online store is where you’ll find our full range of inventory, including our elevated Veilance line, ReGear™ pre-loved equipment, and the most waterproof snowboard jackets in the world.

Why Are Zippers So Important?

Did you know that zipper design was mostly unchanged for most of the 20th century? Even though most other facets of our gear evolved, we still used the same old zippers. That is, until we decided to change that. Zippers have long been a notorious weak point for waterproof and windproof ratings, so we decided to flip it on its head. Literally. We flipped the zipper inside out, turning the more tightly spaced reverse coil design on the inside of the zipper outwards and creating the first WaterTight™ zipper. Once the zipper was turned around, it eliminated the need for pesky flaps, tabs, and snaps that could still allow snow, water, or wind in. For good measure, we also laminated the teeth and slider with a urethane coating to achieve true waterproofing status.

Zippers do more than just keep the weather out. Strategically placed ventilation zippers improve airflow and help you regulate your body temperature when things heat up on the slopes. Fleece-lined hand pockets add warmth when you need it and zip shut to keep your things secure. We also know chest pockets are key for both novice and expert riders alike, so our best snowboard jackets have those too.

Are GORE-TEX Jackets Good for Bad Weather?

For most people, bad weather is anything less than a sunny bluebird day. For snowboarders and alpine adventurers though, it’s a little more complicated. We revel in the challenge of weather. But in order to enjoy the blizzard or the windstorm, you have to trust your gear.

Good outerwear is your most important shield against the elements. Here are a few ways a good waterproof, windproof winter jacket will help you weather Mother Nature’s worst.

Stay Dry

Staying dry in wet conditions is not just about comfort; it’s also the key to staying safe in the mountains. You can get cold, but once you get wet in the cold, it’s game over. GORE-TEX has high waterproof ratings to keep water out, and because of the fabric’s breathability, it also lets your sweat out, keeping you dry for longer.

Stay Warm

Staying warm is important, which is why we talk so much about it. Your base layer, mid layer, gloves, headwear, and outerwear all play important roles in keeping you warm. Outerwear is the first line of defense against the wind and water, and GORE-TEX has perfected how to keep it out. An insulated jacket like the Sabre Jacket provides warmth for resort riders and backcountry enthusiasts alike. Remember to pay close attention to any openings: zippers, clasps, Velcro, and buttons all need to stay closed when the wind blows or precipitation falls.

Stay Comfortable

Comfort can be underrated—if it’s not comfortable, you probably won’t wear it. Making sure your gear fits well is an important part of keeping you dry and warm. If a jacket has poor insulation, you might need to open and close it a lot to regulate your temperature. If a snowboard jacket is too big or too small, it can creep up and expose your skin or base layer to wind and moisture. Our outerwear uses stretchy GORE-TEX fabrics and micro seams for an articulated fit that mimics the dynamic movement of your body. More mobility means more comfort, which means you can last longer on the mountain in any weather.

It’s waterproof, windproof, and breathable (as all our best GORE-TEX winter jackets are) and because it’s so light, it’s exceptionally versatile. Developed in collaboration with our friends at Gore, the GORE-TEX PRO with Most Rugged Technology fabric delivers maximum durability and insulation and is built to withstand extreme weather conditions. The helmet-compatible StormHood™ adjusts to move with your head and maximize peripheral vision while you carve big powder turns or ride through tight trees.

What to Wear Beneath Your Winter Snowboarding Jacket?

We’ve all heard it’s what’s inside that really counts, and the same is true when it comes to layering. Whether you’re shredding off the chairlift or skinning up steep peaks, what’s underneath your favorite snowboarding jacket is just as important as the jacket itself.

Here’s a quick guide on how to layer up properly to get down safely.

Shell Jacket vs. Insulated Jacket

While a shell jacket is a thinner membrane meant to be used in a layering system, an insulated jacket doesn’t require as much underneath. Insulated jackets like the Sabre and the Sabre Anorak provide built-in warmth when it gets cold, making them a great fit for many resort riders and weekend warriors; pack up your jacket and head out.

Shell Jackets like the Rush or the Beta AR give you more latitude in your overall layering system, making them the go-to outerwear option for split boarders and backcountry riders. Super cold? Add more layers underneath. Hot, sunny spring split-board mission? Use just the shell over a base layer and pack a mid-layer in case the weather rolls in.

Base Layers: The First Line of Comfort

Every good day outside starts with a good base layer, and no, a T-shirt doesn’t count. Your base layer is one of the most important factors in keeping you warm and dry so you can spend all day riding in the mountains.

While it may seem like a simple piece of gear, what you wear under your snowboard jacket and ski pants can either elevate its performance or make you miserable.

Merino vs. Synthetic: Which One’s Better?

When it comes to alpine layering, you want your base layer to be moisture-wicking and quick-drying to prevent sweat buildup. We’ve all heard the phrase “cotton kills”, which leaves two main fabric choices for your base layer: Merino wool or synthetic fabrics.

Famous for its lack of itch, Merino wool is also beloved by snowboarders for its natural stretch and superior wicking abilities. The antimicrobial properties of the fabric also mean it doesn’t get as stinky as most base layers, and it also stays warm when wet, making it great for high-output activities.

Synthetics—also known as polyester or polypropylene fabrics—are also great at wicking sweat away from the body. They don’t take on water like Merino, so they dry faster, even while you’re wearing them. Another added bonus of polyester fabrics? Many of them have a UPF sun protection rating to help cut down on the rays while riding in just your base layer. Polartec® Power Stretch® Pro is one of our favorite synthetic fleece jacket materials.

What Base Layer Weight to Choose?

A midweight base layer is usually the sweet spot for standard winter riding. Heavyweight layers are built for extreme cold or frequent stop-and-go activities, while lightweight or super lightweight base layers work well for elite athletes and riders who run hot. They can also be great on a dreamy bluebird spring day on the mountain.

Insulation: Down vs. Synthetic

Natural down is often touted as the best material for winter jacket insulation, but because it doesn’t retain warmth when wet, synthetic insulation can be a better option in wet snow or rainy conditions. While mid-layers might be the most prevalent breathable jackets in mountain sports, few are waterproof on their own, which is especially important when you’re working with down insulation.

Arc’teryx’s solution is our own in-house synthetic insulation called Coreloft™. Siliconized so it resists water, it retains warmth even when wet. It’s also highly compressible, making it packable like down.

What Other Apparel Should I Use with My Snowboarding Jacket?

To complement your new snowboard jacket, here are some of our favorite layers and accessories.

Atom Hoody – Perfect Mid-Layer for Extra Warmth

A legend in mountain towns from Whistler to Chamonix, the Atom Hoody is an easily packable mid-layer that can also be worn on its own all day long. Coreloft™ insulation keeps it efficient, light, and compressible, and the DWR (Durable Water Repellent) finish repels moisture. Plus, it’s stretchy, so it moves easily with your gear, not against it.

Beta Down Mitten – Ultimate Warmth for Your Hands

Designed for the coldest winter days, these mittens are insulated, waterproof, and packable with water-repellent GORE-TEX protecting the 750-fill goose-down insulation. The patterning mimics the hand for dexterity and comfort, and a TPU overlay on the thumb and fingertips improves grip.

Rho Lightweight Wool Neck Gaiter – Protect Your Neck & Face

This warm, soft, and exceptionally versatile Merino wool gaiter does more than keep the neck warm. It can cover your lips and nose so they don’t get chapped by wind, or you can pull it up even higher and use it as a headband. It’s also crafted at a Fair Trade Certified facility as part of the Arc’teryx commitment to transition 80% of products to Fair Trade certification by 2025.

Cormac Heavyweight Hoody – Versatile Layer for All Conditions

Built for colder conditions and designed for trail runs, this breathable fleece mid-layer is perfect for on- and off-mountain comfort. Our very own Phasic AR II material pulls moisture off the body, the fitted hood adds warmth and insulation, and the articulated trim fit frees you to move at speed.
