Companion on rock and ice

This jacket excels in situations where you put it on and leave it on. It is very breathable and provides adequate weather and wind protection provided you know what you are using it for. It is an excellent stand-alone piece for autumn and spring, and it could also be used during high output activity in the winter. I use the double chest pockets all the time, whether climbing or out in town. Great fit, layers well under Alpha FL shell, and the shoulders have withstood many hours carrying various packs.
Q: Pros:
A: Breathability, durability
Q: Cons:
A: Not very packable
Q: Activity
A: Climbing, hiking

Yes, I recommend this product.

Great fit, comfortable, keep it away from branches

I was looking for a lightly insulated jacket for climbing and hiking that was packable that would be burly enough for an outer layer. The jacket packs well into it's own hood, but clipping the elastic seems a bit tenuous, and I'm more comfortable storing it in a small bag. The only thing I was disappointed with was durability. On my second or third real outing with the jacket, we were doing some moderate scrambling. Sadly the shell got punctured by a wayward branch, and has a small ~1cm hole and some loose threads. While I was very comfortable on the 50-60F hike, I was a bit disappointed a jacket that costs this much was already showing wear 3 weeks into ownership. Wish they hadn't discontinued the 40D version. I am 5'11", 170 lbs. with a 42" chest, I usually wear a medium, but a Large fits me very well all around, chest, torso, and arms.
Q: Pros:
A: Comfortable, fits well
Q: Cons:
A: Not particularly durable
Q: Activity
A: Climbing

Warmer than expected

Originally intended to go for proton LT but they had run out of my size so went for this one. The LT is a lot warmer, but still the FL is good enough for spring, so the LT would have definitely been too warm for summer nights. Works great as a mid-layer under my beta AR. Wouldn't use it as standalone for hiking as it doesn't look very snag-resistant (could be wrong though). Would be great if arc'teryx offered better colours. Cobalt moon looked washed-out
Q: Pros:
A: Warm for the lightness
Q: Cons:
A: Wrinkles a lot. Weak water resistan
Q: Activity
A: Running, everyday

Yes, I recommend this product.

Also as other have commented, wind resistance is subtle at best and I would trust the dwr treatment for anything else than a short exposure to light rain. So great as a mid-layer, but as standalone only works if you're expecting good weather (and not expecting to get it expose to branches or rocks)

From strange to very cool piece of equipment

I bought this jacket last ski season, used it on a cool spring skiing day and almost froze because the cool air penetrated right through the jacket. Disappointed, I put it away and felt the jacket was useless for skiing. After a year, I decided to try it one more time before donating it. I took it out this winter and spring and used it as a mid layer with a light shell over it. It provided great insulation in the arms and body, and, when jumping into a chute for a fast speed run ~45 - ~55mph, you could feel the insulation on the arms put enough distance between the skin and outer layer of the shell (instead of pressing the shell against the skin/thin-turtleneck layer) as well as the chest area. On warmer days 40F, using a feather down mid layer, I would build up enough activity heat to begin to sweat, and would open the pit zips and hip elastic to no real heat relief. But with the Proton's huge air permeability, air filtered throughout the jacket and even the up the arms to prevent breaking out in a sweat. Now this is my go-to skiing combination. A shell outer layer, with pit zips and hip elastic, the Proton, and on very cold days, a vest with insulation on the chest and highly air permeable side and back panels. Also, the Proton hood fits over a helmet and provides a great layer of insulation when the chairlift ride has a lot of cross winds especially from the side. My Proton won't be donated. It is now a keeper.
Q: Pros:
A: Light; Breaths, definitely midlayer
Q: Cons:
A: strong cold winds --> use a shell
Q: Activity
A: Skiing fast, blizzard conditions

Yes, I recommend this product.

Better than expected

After reading previous reviews and contemplating purchasing this jacket I was concerned that it would not provide adequate wind resistance and that it would not be warm enough. I can confidently say that I have found neither of these to be issues. While not completely wind resistant the Proton FL still does a good job of taking the bite out of cold winds. It has also kept me comfortably warm with just a t-shirt on underneath in 2 Degrees Celsius and the hand warmer pockets are quite a nice feature as well. Overall I have found the Proton FL to be a great choice for activities and casual day-to-day wear.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Great lightweight jacket

Bought this because I'm not a standard fleece hoody fan. Still need something over a t shirt. This jacket is great so far, from minus 7c to plus 13c. Fits snug but comfy, 5ft 11inch, 175lbs bought a medium. Shipping was fast as usual.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Solid spring/fall jacket

I've owned this jacket for about a month now - it is great for walking around in the city at temperatures between 40-70 degrees, which is exactly what I wanted it for. The breathability is great. The only downside I've found so far is that the main zipper unzips when walking, which is pretty annoying. Adding a bit more friction to the mechanism would stop this from happening.

Jackpot!

I purchased this jacket a few months ago with low expectations since I bought it on a whim using a coupon. It has exceeded my expectations and quickly become one of my favorite Arc’teryx pieces. A year-round jacket with ample amount of pockets and a great fit. I’m 5’9” ~160lbs and the medium fits me perfectly. I have a longer torso so the jacket falls just below my belt line and the sleeves are just the right length with a little extra for activities needing to stretch the arms. I’ve put this jacket to the test backcountry skiing and romping around in the southern Utah desert so far and have zero complaints. The lined hand warmer pockets is a huge bonus and was a nice surprise when I tried the jacket on after it arrived. Looking forward to testing it on in other seasons and activities but so far the Proton FL is a must have!

Good light fleece layer

I am still getting accompanied to the Proton FL. So far it seems to fit the bill of being a light jacket for low activity, or as a stronger insulating layer for high output activity in cold weather. I've used for winter running (-7C) and also as my mid layer for snowboarding in warm conditions (-2C to 2C). I'm 6'3, 195 pounds with a long torso and L fits me decently well.

Best all-around mid layer in Arc’s current lineup

I’ve owned nearly every mainstream jacket that Arc’teryx produces, and I’d say that this is the best active jacket you can buy. Doesn’t cut wind, but breathes wonderfully, especially for people who normally run hot. The atom LT might be slightly more stylish and versatile, but I’d recommend investing in an atom AR as your everyday jacket and a proton fl for any activity.

Can almost do it all!

Solid jacket for many activities. I use it for hiking and as a mid layer for skiing. Surprisingly warm: sun out, minimal wind (less than 5mph), I can take it to 30F with just a tshirt under. Fits close to body, but you can still layer a heavy base layer (260-300 weight). It breaths, and wicks moisture away, but I don’t recommend for jogs. It can collect odor, so it works great for social distancing. Pockets are great too, though I do mistake the chest zip for the pocket zips from time to time. Small price to pay.

Q: Activity
A: Hiking,skiing, walks

Overlooked and Versatile

This jacket was my first Arc'teryx product, and its versatility never ceases to amaze me. What I mean to say is, living in the PNW, I am able to use this jacket comfortably for at least six months out of the year, in wildly varying conditions. Going for a run in a morning drizzle? The Proton FL is breathable enough to not overheat, and water-resistant enough to stay out for an hour (I'm sure it'd be fine for much longer, it'd just wet out). Need to take the dog for a run on a breezy, sunny afternoon (~45F)? Or a chilly winter morning jog (~32F)? I'm comfortable in both situations, time and time again. It's really just my go to jacket, even surpassing my Atom LT when it's not super cold out and I know I'll be moving around (Atom always if I'm going to sit around outside, though). The material does seem to be substantially more damage resistant, and I've made it through some gnarly trail runs, tearing through low branches with no sign of wear. Highly, highly recommend this piece for cool weather romping.
Q: Pros:
A: Durable, versatile, breathable
Q: Cons:
A: None yet
Q: Activity
A: Mixed-weather Spring/Fall hiking, running, biking

Yes, I recommend this product.

I live in this now

I have a lot of jackets, but this is the one I enjoy wearing the most. I run in it in the winter, wear it "around" when its above freezing. Its replaced my R1 midlayer because its more comfortable, lighter, easier to doff or don, breathes better, and the shell material has great weather protection. It's truly magical in how comfortable it is in so many different conditions. Fit is great for climbing, breathes great for running in if its under 20F or so, and It's weatherproof enough for me to not usually need my hardshell when skiing with it. Buy this jacket. You wont regret it.

Magical Layering Piece

This jacket blew away my expectations, I already have an LT and thought what do I need a lighter version for? This thing is incredibly light and packable when rolled into its own hood, all Arcteryx stuff works wonderfully this way just pull on the hood adjustment cord on the back and it holds it all together. It breaths incredibly well. I compare this jacket to a fleece with better wind and water protection. Speaking of the hood I was sceptical of the non insulated hood but I absolutely love it. The hood is very comfortable and the perfect warmth for the jacket, the hood slips under an outer layer so nicely you don’t even know it’s there. I layer this mostly under a Gamma LT and the hood disappears nicely under it but is easily retrieved if you want it. This jacket is like wearing a cozy sweater just like the LT version and has 4 pockets! For reference I’m 5’10” and 150 lbs Waist 32, chest 38, Hips 38 and I love the fit of all my medium Arc Jackets.

Not cut for climbers

I’m 6’ 2” trim and the XL jacket is 3 to 4 inches too short in the sleeves when I raised my arms overhead. I really wanted this jacket to work for ice and rock climbing. Arc’teryx please make alpine jackets cut for climbers! Maybe you could offer tall sizes?

A: Great jacket features

Good jacket, but too short in the front

I was looking for a jacket like this - a midlayer/softshell that provides some warmth but is also breathable. It is really good at that - however, the jacket is oddly short in the front. Some Arcteryx jackets are quite short, but this was even more so. I am 187cm (6'1) tall and should not have this problem with a size L. Arcteryx should really revisit the fit of this jacket and add at least 2 inches in the front. For other people also experiencing the issue, a better option is Atom SL.

Wanted to love this jacket but...

I really wanted to love this jacket. I checked out all the reviews and thought it was what I was looking for. But when I got the shipping package and tried it on, I was disappointed that the front was way too short. I understand there may be reasons to have a short front, but it was way overdone in this jacket. I have other Arcteryx jackets and vests, and this is the only one where I have this problem.

A: Warm yet breathable
Q: Cons:
A: Front hem way too short

Weakest Arcteryx jacket

Fit and how it feels are very good. But the problem or disadvantage I find impossible to ignore: No wind protection. The wind just blows through. That is, you cool off, not only on the bike, but as soon as wind is there, so even when normal hiking or walking around. This is probably due to the breathability, but is a complete mistake. I notice this every time I have them on. Since I'm traveling right now, I only have one alternative with me, the (fantastic) Atom SL and even this thinner jacket blocks the wind and warms at the same time - put it on, perfect. The Proton disappoints me every time. Also, the collar is too wide and too low. Should probably fit a helmet, but without a helmet it winds into the jacket from above. No protection. Too bad. It is a very good midlayer - like a fleece (in terms of wind permeability). But a fleece costs only a part of the price. Also, what I always greatly miss about all Arcteryx jackets: no way to pack them inside themselves. I know you're supposed to stuff the jackets into the hood or sleeve. But there is just no way to hang them on a climbing harness. Too bad! Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version)

Customer Support
Hey there, Thank you for reaching out and sharing your feedback on the Proton FL Hoody. We're sorry the features on the Proton FL Hoody did not meet your expectations. The Proton FL Hoody was designed to provide a minimal amount of warmth in a highly breathable package for high output activities. As you alluded to, an item such as the Atom SL Hoody with it's Tyono 20 Softshell face fabric and Coreloft synthetic insulation will offer good weather resistance as this was its design intention. Nonetheless, we appreciate your comments and will be sure to pass them along to our design team. If you have any additional questions, please feel free to contact our Customer Service Line or fill out a Contact Us Form. All the best.

FTF Class (From The Future)

I’ve waited too long to contribute a well-deserved review. This is a brilliant, extremely versatile piece. I own five going on six, so have voted with my dollars and gladly share (sometimes being poked fun at) about the astutely advanced design whenever opportunity presents itself. Specifically, that to the best of my understanding this jacket is from the future. It puts a smile on my face to say it every time. I’ve remained dry and remarkably comfortable throughout much Pacific Northwest rain, including short duration downpours, where DWR treated Fortius A20 and Octa Loft precluded need for a shell. Even thoroughly wetted the jacket dries quickly. I’ve seen many hikes, travels, outdoor activities, and a trek to South Sister summit with this FL unit. Balanced form and function are evidenced not only within fit and finish—no small achievement—but in the operation. Marrying perfect form and function is exceptionally difficult. The Proton FL was conceived and executed with integrity to the highest design philosophy. Arc’teryx: well done. I’m grateful. My hope is that this will remain as an exemplary core line piece, true to your mission for many years with uncompromising evolutions.

Great Jacket- One Annoying Flaw

Bought about a month ago and have used for running, biking, and wearing around town. Overall, it's an amazing jacket. The jacket is FAR warmer than you'd expect for something this lightweight, and it's a truly comfortable piece. For packability I really do wish it stowed into it's own pocket- that'd make it really amazing for traveling/ backpacking/ bikepacking etc. My one major gripe- the front/ main zipper doesn't lock. Doesn't seem like a big deal until you throw a pack on. 2 minutes later you've got a cold breeze coming through 'cause the zipper has migrated down to your belly. It's really, really annoying to have to keep zipping up the jacket over and over again because the weight of a pack pulls the jacket back, resulting in the zipper pulling down. Major oversight on an otherwise awesome jacket. Arc'teryx, please fix this!
Q: Pros:
A: Lightweight, warm, super comfy
Q: Cons:
A: Awful non-locking front zipper
Q: Activity
A: Hiking, biking, trail running, backpacking, wearing around town

Yes, I recommend this product.

High quality, great all rounder

Bought at the start of UK winter (Nov); been using a lot for exercise (running / hiking / bike) and just around town - great all rounder, warm but breathable, the cut / trim is perfect, and multi pockets suit well for keys/phone/snacks. I run quite warm but it breathes really well. Small main zip has been fine, only issue when had a hooded fleece under it widened the neck and pushed the zip open a little but its been fine otherwise. Black colour is smart too.
Q: Pros:
A: Light, breathable, all-rounder
Q: Cons:
A: None!
Q: Activity
A: Runnning / biking / hiking

Yes, I recommend this product.
