Easy to pack/Easy to carry/Easy to use!!!

I have been using this amazing new alpine pack in the Swiss Alps for two weeks of alpine rock climbing and so far it's exceeded all my expectations. It's a roomy 30 liters and also packs down very small for on routes nimbleness. The top closure has two tightness adjustments and the inner and outer small pocket are great for the small items. Like snacks!!! This packs is now my go to light pack.

Whyyyy did they remove the roll top!??

While insanely light I think this pack actually has some significant issues unlike the amazing FL version. The BIG one: they got rid of the roll top - the new draw closure with small flap is totally open to spindrift, rain, etc - so that means I'm not bringing a pack cover or putting my clothing in waterproof stuff sacks which very quickly cancels out the weight savings. This new closure also means the pack is much smaller valume compared to the FL and honestly not really big enough for multi-day alpine missions. I LOVED the rolltop extendible closure on my FL. On the approach (when harness, rack, extra clothes are stashed away) I would have the pack super tall with the internal rolltop sleeve sticking high. When you get to the alpine, softshell pants and harness, gear are on your body, so the rolltip goes back inside and the pack is low and perfect for climbing. This was perfect. Why would they change this?? My two cents: - bring back the rolltop - it makes the pack way more versatile and actually waterproof - would be great to have a larger 40-45L size; the 30L is pretty tight for alpine missions where you have a full rack or winter climbing.

Arc'teryx Guest Services
Hi there. Thanks for sharing this detailed feedback on the Alpha SL 30 Backpack. We understand how important pack closure systems and volume flexibility are in alpine environments, and we’ve shared your input with our product team. While the Alpha SL 30 introduces a new design direction focused on simplicity and weight savings, we are still offering the Alpha FL line, which may better suit your needs with its roll-top closure and more adaptable capacity. We appreciate you taking the time to share your experience—it helps us continue refining our designs for specific use cases like yours.

Thanks for the review. It's unfortunate to hear though about weather proofing. Given the very nature of the Aluula fabric it is surprising for Arc'teryx not to lean into the natural water proofing qualities and make the bag fully waterproof (top closure system). I can't speak for other parts of the world but in the Nordics an alpine bag should and needs to be waterproof all the way around so this unfortunately won't suit our needs.

An Upgrade to a Classic

Having used the Alpha FL packs for many years, the Alpha SL 30 feels like a big upgrade. Biggest difference clearly is the weight and that it sits higher on your back, was great with a harness, when running a little on the descent I noticed the higher pack height threw off balance/running form a little but overall think it’s well suited for intended use (climbing) with the higher height and felt good on the steeps. The side compression straps were awesome, definitely a huge plus for pack size as well as stashing poles etc… the ice axe attachments are a massive step above the FL packs, way more sturdy in my opinion. Aluula composite material is awesome so far has held up well, be interested to see if it dirts quick like dyneema or not… so far not. The inner pocket material I’m interested to see how it holds up… seems less robust than the rest of the pack and I can see kit rubbing up against it in the pack… but time will tell on that. Overall a great pack.

Great pack, but needs external crampon lash points

Super comfortable and carries weight well. Great while climbing. Couldn't give 5 starts because for some strange reason there is not another set of bar tacks to allow using elastic cord to hold crampons on the outside of the pack like all the FL packs have. For a 30L pack, stowing 'pons inside would take up too much precious space. For $400 was adding another set of lash points too costly? Too heavy? Or, can we expect a $200 external Grafyte pocket soon? Weird design decision.

Ultralight for alpine climbing

The backpack is ultra-lightweight. After several alpine climbing tours and a week of high-altitude tours and north face climbing, I am extremely satisfied. It has sufficient space, and the pockets (especially the inner ones) are very practical. The closure is more practical than that of the normal Alpha FL backpack. The compression straps are not quite ideal. Super comfortable to carry. Unfortunately, it does not come with a helmet net! This material is the future for ultralight and durability!

Amazing and Comfortable Pack

I've taken this cragging around Alberta, with the most recent tester up Achilles Spire. What a pack! It's comfortable, clears the harness, it's light and it has pockets! one zippered at the front AND one zippered on the inside! I've appreciated the zippered pockets. For 13 pitches up Achilles, the pack sits comfortably and I barely felt the pack on my back most of the time. I appreciated the compresson straps being removable as I found that I didn't need all of them going up the mountain. The waist straps sat nicely and provided the support for hiking in with the gear. The height adjustable chest strap did it's job. Pack construction appears to be durable and it lasted me getting up the prickly dolomite and also throwing it around at the various crags. The material does show dirt pretty quickly, and it obviosuly doesn't help that it's white. I will say the same thing or the grey straps and shoulder straps just showing dirt very easily. Pack is top opening and operating is simple, easy and no fuss. However, I'm not sure the closure system will protect the insides from a heavy downpour. The pack cinches from the top and then strapped over with a bit of grafalyte. If your pack is full and it's bulging out - sure, the water won't pool. but if the pack isn't full, the top may collect some water. But then again, are you climbing in heavy rain?
