Expensive but exceptional jacket

I bought my Alpha Parka about a month ago and tested it in -5C. No wind or cold goes through, while at the same time providing great mobility. The size is just right for wearing thing layers underneath and I love the neck protection. If I could change something, I’d add an additional zipped pocket on the inside.

Perfect Mid-Weight Down Parka for Mountaineering

For medium high altitude alpine mountaineering, this fits between a Feathered Friends 38 ounce parka (or full mountaineering suit) and a thin/fast-n-light belay jacket. I used this up to 16,400 feet on Mount Sanford in Alaska encountering -10F with strong winds and it was my go-to jacket for after-climbing warmth, dinner in the snow, and for our rather frosty summit day. Fits over all my aerobic layers, breathes well where it needs to, packs down remarkably small, and doesn't weigh my pack down (like the 38 + ounce mountaineering parkas do). Photo shows it keep me toasty while waiting for rescue in the serious crevasse I fell into in Alaska.

Like wearing a sleeping bag!

I got this jacket for those cold High desert and frigid temps that climbing often involves in the winter time. As someone who gets cold easily I thought this jacket would be the end all be all, which it is! There is no such thing as cold with this jacket. The neck baffles on the inside of the collar are amazing and keep those ice drafts out and the heat in! 10/10 would recommend!

A down fortress

Incredibly warm! This jacket is like wearing a sleeping bag. Very lofty and super light weight considering the size. The hood adjusts to wearing a helmet or just over the head. Did I mention this jacket is warm! I like the two way zipper but wish the bottom zipper had a zipper pull as well, It can be dicey with gloves. All around a great warm technical jacket

I'm writing this review to help others with sizing. No doubt, this is a great parka. I will echo the other glowing reviews, no need to repeat what is already stated. The biggest hurdle for me was picking a size considering the work I do. I see many people with my build getting a medium and others who get a large, I wasn't sure so I took a chance and ordered the Parka in my typical Arc size. I'm 6'0" 185lbs (183cm 84kg) and almost exclusively wear Arc size large. My photos show Practitioner AR Hoody, Ski Guide Jacket, and Alpha Parka (all Dynasty). I work in mountain rescue, mountaineering in alpine environment, around 14000ft (4267m) in cold and dry weather. For static insulation, I used to wear an old Cerium SV (purchased in 2018) but the face fabric is Arato 10 and liner is Arato7 (according to Arc, it's a lightweight ripstop nylon that is very fragile and designed to be used under a shell). Currently I only wear the old Cerium SV very carefully and casually in the city. I didn't want to rip my fancy and fragile puffy at work - the answer is Alpha Parka. I also looked at other brands but wanted to stick with the fit and technical design. Other reviews recommended purchasing the same size you normally wear if you want to layer other pieces - solid recommendation. When I'm standing still, I run really cold. When I'm moving, I run really hot. Above 14,000ft, I can wear a long sleeve shirt as long as I'm moving quickly. If it's snowing and windy, I'll throw on the Practitioner AR and it keeps me warm while wicking away sweat. The Ski Guide Jacket is next - it blocks wind and moisture and has pit-zips so I can vent sweat. Finally, the Alpha Parka fits over all of these layers just fine. It's light, warm, durable, allows for movement, and packs down into its own stuff sack. If I have to stand around for a few hours in a blizzard on the side of the mountain, I can wear my harness with full gear loops, all layers, throw on my Arc Rescue Pack with about 40lbs of weight, and I'll be just fine. I purchased the Alpha Parka mainly for mountain rescue work but plan to put it through its paces on icy belays and trips to Trader Joes and the dog park.
The second one I've owned (the first was on Rainier or Denali almost every weekend, plus endless use as an incident commander for FEMA). Went through probably three dozen washes, endless snowstorms turned into rain storms, a couple fuel spills that caught it on fire (the last one did the first one in) and many many spills of 2-cylinder fuel mix, mustard, antibiotic ointments, bourbon, and marine diesel. It warmed at the end as much as at the beginning, but I finally couldn't get the diesel smell out and the last flame-out with fuel was no longer repairable. So as you can imagine, this has seen many uses beyond belay, though it's also been on belay hundreds of times. Overall, can't complain about a single thing. The zip is two-way, which is great not only for harness (I was 78 feet up on a sailboat off Iceland while wearing it and really needed that feature -- note to Arcteryx: marine sheave grease does not wash out of the cover fabric but doesn't get past it) plus it makes it much easier to regulate temperature (since it's a pretty intense insulator). And it makes it easier to pee. The inside pockets are invaluable and huge. Like huuuggge. Monstrous. And the hand warmer pockets hold almost anything (carried six Garmin GPS units in them on one occasion and a dozen bags of freeze-dried dinner on another). I could use a couple smaller pockets on the outside when simply standing belay, because a place to stash an energy bar or a thin skull cap would be great. The cuffs are great for almost everything. The neck design and the hood are simply perfect. This is billed as a belay jacket but that scarcely describes it. It keeps you warm at -26 F at a campsite. I wore it many times working an incident command post in the winter when I simply had to sit and not freeze. I've cooked for 325 avalanche rescue workers and hiked my four Akita avalanche rescue dogs across a glacier while wearing it. And I've slept in it countless times. When power went out and I was almost frozen, I slept in it -- and that was in Dallas, TX. Fit is quite relaxed around the torso without the arms becoming phenomenally long. It doesn't lift at all when you are working with your arms overhead. The fabric is supremely tough and I had to burn it (literally) to put a hole through it. I never ever tore the exterior. I wore it once in a rescue helo in very rough weather and threw up into the interior of it, but it cleaned up fine. It has seen use in every cold and high altitude and adverse situation I've had to work and never failed me. I'd recommend the black over the red. The red tends to show body oil after a while and collects grime that doesn't clean off quite as well. But that's a nit and for the uses I put it to, I needed the red. Now I have a new one. I also have a slightly used Alpha parka with just a small burn hole across the chest if anyone is interested. And slight smell of vomit and diesel fuel inside. Works great.
