Really really really disappointed that Arc'teryx doesn't make the pants in XL short size. Way too long! They're a fine pant but I have to return them.

Material is not durable at all!!!

I purchased these Alpha pants years ago for some climbs in the Cascades that I intended to do but never got around to it until recently. I liked the pants initially, but they only lasted on two trips, which I only wore two times. The material is not durable at all. I unintentionally slid about 15’ on the snow, not icy tall, maybe a little corny but not bad, and got a small tear, which turned into a larger tear. The material is not meant for mountain activities. I contacted Arcteryx but and was offered a 25% discount to buy another pair if I sent these pants to them. I don’t expect a full replacement but 25% discount is a joke for $350 pants that failed after two uses. Hard to believe in a brand that doesn’t believe in their own products.

Amazing material, weak snaps, no pockets

I am a little disappointed with this pant. I love all of my other Arteryx products and typically find I don't have to go too far to pick my quality outdoor gear and pay the price for quality and durability from shoes, boots, jackets, etc. While I am impressed with the performance of this pant, I find the design questionable and find them extremely frustrating to wear. This is due to the weird side snap and awkward position of the zipper/snap area at the waist. First, the snap is weak and is often unpopping at the most inconvenient time. There are many positive reviews of this pant and I don't quite understand how they are able to conduct activities in these pants without them unsnapping. The pants don't fall off per se thanks to the smart shape of the pant and the drawstring but if is still highly frustrating. I am also voting on the side of pockets, they would be very nice with these pants to avoid the awkward requirement of unzipping eveytime I want to grab something out of my pocket. Also, I don't think it would add too much weight to add a couple of belt loops for those who can't rely on the ridiculously weak snaps and the floss this drawstring.

Great, but stated weight ain’t right

I bought the Alpha in the Men’s Small, and they fit better than the Small Betas. The Beta had an unusually narrow lower leg, and bunched up my lightweight hiking pants no matter how I tried to arrange them. Not so the Alpha. I also don’t mind the lack of a pocket. I can easily unzip the side zippers to reach things in my hiking pants. Again, the Beta came up short in this regard. No matter how much I tightened the waist, I had to use two hands to unzip, or leave the Beta’s zippers opened several inches below the waistband.
My only complaint with the Alpha is with the stated weight. Part of the value of the Alpha is their light weight. The stated weight is 7.8 ounces for a Men’s Medium. My Men’s Small weigh 9.2 ounces on my postage scale, roughly two ounces heavier than you’d expect the Men’s Small to weigh. (Yes, I took the tags off.) So while they’re still lightweight, a 25% error isn’t right.

Very nice, with a design flaw (for me).

Great shape and fit. Very nice quality. A keeper, but unfortunately and disappointingly, I was finding that due to the design of the waist band my pack's hip belt pads were squeezing the snap buttons and zippers against my iliac crest bones. This was never going to be comfortable walking even a relatively short distance under load. Ideally the zippers should finish up a few inches below a continuous circumference waist band that does not therefore require snap buttons. This would solve the issue completely and make this pant just about perfect (a thigh pocket would be a bonus). In the Professional Use section there is a pant with this design, the Alpine Guide Pant. It's unfortunate because there's already the Beta waterproof pant with the same waist snap/ zipper design as the Alpha pant. Having two pants with this same design presents a bit of a no choice choice as the Alpine is only available to professionals.
