Amazing quality but large sizing

This is my 3rd shell jacket from Arcteryx and I keep coming back because not a lot out there can rival the quality and looks. Its worth noting that the sizing on this jacket is different from previous models. Im 6'1 and 170 lbs and would usually go for a size M. I found that on this model it wore larger than normal, with more than enough room around the body, bulky shoulders and long sleeves. I returned my M for a S instead and here the fit was much better. It still has room for layering but remains looking slim, even for those days where an insulated base layer isnt needed. At the end of the day it comes down to preference, but if you are like me who preferres a more athletic look, I would size down.

Happy to share my comments in relation to your post. Don't think the Alpha SV fits large. I've purchased the S, fits perfectly (only one mid layer) all, sleeves, chest, lenght... I am 1.70cm/chest 94cm/ 64 Kg. - I am "surviving" with: merino as base layer, Atom AR (mid), and the super amazing Alpha SV. Probably the M fitted large on you, but from my humble point of view - generally speaking - the current S fits small, fits like my Beta L (2017). From my point of view, the new sizing is quite misleading i.e. the current S (regular) fits like the previous XS. The point is that if you're clearly on the M size body, okay, but the S has become smaller.

Best jacket I’ve ever worn.

I bought this jacket several months ago because I needed a tough as nails Gore-Tex shell with unrestricted movement. I do a lot of winter hiking and cross country skiing as well as your normal every day back-and-forth from work. I get a lot of snow where I live. I’m a believer in the fact that great gear can make you more capable and versatile, and this is the jacket to allow you to be just that. I’ve worn it on a bunch of hiking trips so far with inclement weather and a lot of scrambling and it performed far beyond my expectations. This jacket is pure awesomeness. Bomb proof!

The best all round winter shell on the market

I bought this as I am a huge fan of the dark magic color scheme and I needed a new coat to ski in. The fit was a little longer than the beta AR and looser fitting in the large size than the beta AR. This was just what I needed for skiing in. Also the sleeves are very long (due to being a ice climbing coat) but this is great if you like your coat over your gloves. The hood is also the largest hood ive used, giving full range of motion, even when having a xl ski helmet on underneath. The pockets are great to dump lots of things in and very easy to access. What I also love about this coat is, as its not a specific ski coat, you can also wear it for hiking/city/mountaineering for when it is very stormy and need the best protection from the elements around.

LEAF Alpha SV il y a deux ans. Gamme distribuée aux forces armées. Sensée être résistance à l’abrasion, une qualité du Gore-tex hors du commun et justifiant l’écart de prix avec d’autres marques concurrentes… Trois mois d’utilisation, les épaules et face côté poitrine n’étaient plus du tout étanches et prenaient l’eau en quelques minutes de pluie moyenne. Réimperméabiliser n’y a rien changé. Très décevant.

A good jacket with need some improvements.

Overall a good jacket. Cuff adjustment velcro should be the same streamline as what Sabre SV jacket has. It's sleak and better looking than what these Alpha SV jackets have. Same material and colour as the jacket. Outside chest pockets are good. Well placed and roomy. Interior pockets are also well placed but they should be bigger for fitting bigger phones and both should have zipper closure for secure. Pockets are important and it's annoying when the phone barely fits into pocket. It doesn't take much to make them bigger and adding zipper to both interior pockets. The bicep pocket is questionable. Is it really necessary. The aim is to make this jacket simple and functional putting there only what is needed. Lip balm doesn't require its own pocket. All the pulls of the zippers are great. They are big and simple, good shape. This is important so using them is easy with gloves or without as well. One colour jacket is good. Please keep this way. It looks much better than two tones. The lighter blue colour Serene is great colour. Also why don't you introduce some lighter colours as Arctic Silk or Warm Stone.

Overall the jacket GORE- Tex materials perform as they should i.e., robust, withstand impacts with tree branches, insulates and breathes well. However, the cams used for the cinching are complete trash and do not hold. I have come to expect more from Arcteryx but they completely missed the mark on functionality. I regret this purchase more than any other summer, winter, fall, cycling, snowboarding garmet I have. I've wore it a total of three times because of my disgust. If you expect top performance for top dollar do not purchase.

Perfect! A staple.

This is THE quintessential 3L Goretex Ice Climbing Hardshell and Arcteryx has perfected it over the years. Some reviews online are calling it overkill, but I don't agree. The cut does a good job not riding up when raising my arms when wearing a harness, the face material is the right balance between being burly and lightweight, and the pockets are in the right places. The two chest pockets are so huge, I think the designers intend them to be where you store gloves and things you want to keep warm as opposed to the inner mesh pockets I'm more used to. The one mesh pocket inside the jacket holds a water bottle well. My only concern is the velcro cuffs icing up when used over the cuff, on my BD hardshell ski jacket I added snaps- you can buy them at the hardware store. It's just an all around awesome piece of kit.

Almost perfect

Almost perfect. If only it were an inch or two longer. So few companies make things that fit tall skinny people well. Way too big of I upsized. I would love the addition of regular, in the way of a harness, pockets. Coming from someone who works in a harness fairly frequently you can just take the things out of said pockets when needed. Everything else I would want out of a shell.

I like everything about this jacket, look sturdy, flexible, rainproof, roomy for layering. only inconvenient in the sleeve could be at least 2 inches shorter, but friends with the same jacket don't have this problem, I'm a short arm person hihi!! now I wait for winter to try it in cold weather! only time will tell about the reliability of this jacket.

Flexibility and Fit is Perfect

Needs improvement

I kept it but there are three big missives with this. Firstly, I want to start off that this shell is Arc's statement piece and therefore should showcase state of the art features. It is really not that innovative. It is missing a perforated area at the top of the zip so you can breathe with it being zipped and not fogging your glasses. This feature would be great. Secondly, I wish it had a waist cinch in addition to its thigh cinch. As it is, the cut goes way below your butt (too far) and a way to bring it up is to cinch the waist. This cinch also decreases bulk. Finally, the arms are just comically long, even for a climbing jacket. I think Arc should take a fresh look at this jacket and instead of promoting the innovative fabric, come up with some new innovations that make it more valuable, especially since it costs almost a grand.

I trust my Alpha SV in any & all conditions while I’m on the slopes! Withstands the nastiest weather that Whistler throws out. Completely wind and water proof. You must wash the jacket regularly and it’ll last you years & years. I got a new Alpha SV for the upcoming ski season after my previous Alpha SV lasted over 250 ski days. This jacket is well worth the expense.

I chose the Alpha SV out of availability. Originally, I was seeking a beta shell but the specific colors and sizing I was interested in were not available. I am very happy with the decision to go up a level to the Alpha. The range of motion, fit and comfort, and practicality for adverse weather is amazing. I live and play within Vancouver Island mountains and this jacket has not let me down once.
