My go-to jacket

I use this jacket for almost everything I do. It's so light that I don't worry about throwing it in my pack for a backpacking trip. It has amazing windstopping abilities though in cold winds I've found that it is best paired with my Delta Jacket, that way I can strip either layer if I get to hot or it is no longer windy but still chilly. It packs into its own chest pocket which makes it manageable if I want to bring it anywhere. I've used it for a lot of gnarly jobs and the fabric has yet to rip or show any signs of slowing down. The only thing that seems to be diminishing is the water repellent coating, but that's easily remedied with any DWR treatment. In my opinion, everyone needs a Squamish.

Versatile and warm hoody

Since I bought this hoody I have found myself selecting it from my closet to wear in all cold-weather situations. It has some nice touches: Elastic around the sleeve bottoms, zips up around your neck with the hood down. Very warm, high-tech fabric that keeps one warm and snug down to the mid-30's F. Everyone should own one of these. Worn underneath a windbreaker it's effective down to very cold temps. Great piece of gear!

Indispensable Windshell for Ski Touring

My goal in selecting a layering system when ski touring is to minimize the need for time consuming layer transitions throughout the course of the day. A big part of this is selecting a layer that provides me with a wide comfort range during ascents. For me the Squamish Hoody is the indispensable layer used to fill this role. I generate a fair bit of heat while skinning so I generally need to layer down a fair bit to prevent overheating and soaking layers in sweat. Given that my touring is almost exclusively in the Coast Mountains temps are using mild so I almost never skin in a shell or insulated layer. Even lights winds can cool me enough to make it uncomfortable to skin in a base layer, this is where the Squamish Hoody comes in. I wear the hoody as the next layer after my base layer and keep it on throughout the day. During ascents the hoody breaths well enough to prevent overheating but when the wind kicks up it provides enough protection to let me keep going without adding a layer. The hood extends the comfort range of the jacket dramatically; it can be used to regulate temperature significantly. During stops or descents I add layers on top of the hoody; leaving it on allows a quick transition to skinning. Construction and finishing is up to Arcteryx's high standards. The hood is particularly well designed with excellent adjustment and good coverage. The lightweight materials make it easy to pack away in the lip of your pack or side pocket for the times when it's warm enough that I need to remove it. Overall this is a great addition to clothing system for ski touring outings, not to be left at home.

Amazing mini-alpha.

Really top notch wind shell, fits more or less like my goretex alpha, except with a smaller hood. Not waterproof, but it repels rain (even slightly heavier showers) well enough to give you time to find shelter. The jacket breathes really well, is perfectly cut for comfortable motion, and looks really nice. It's really light and packs down to a very small packet. A definite addition to my ultralight hiking kit. This is like a perfect distillation of arcteryx design into one superb piece. if you need a rain-'proof' jacket get something else, if you want a weather resistant Swiss-army jacket, this is the one!

I went bushwhacking with this last weekend and it took a ton of abuse and a lot of moderate rain. I accidentally hit it with my very sharp bush saw. I didn't even have to wash it when I got home, it took thorns, pine branches, rock, a sharp saw, and didn't have a scratch on it afterwards. It kept me dry-enough(TM) through summer showers lasting all day. I wouldn't count on this as my rain shell in the autumn, when hypothermia is a concern, but man did this over perform in the rain! I own way too many Arcteryx pieces (my girlfriend teases me about it) and this is the best one of them all. Superb piece. One minor complaint is that when stuffed into it's own pocket the loop used for hooking to a harness/pack is leaving me less than confident. One stitch popped and now I'm afraid do have it dangle off of my climbing harness in case others follow.

Versatile Piece of Equipment

I bought this jacket thinking I would use it mostly for backpacking. In reality, I haven't yet used it for that. I used it in two ways so far: I needed a good windbreaker for those late winter/ early spring road rides, and this fit the bill. Once I warm up, this fits in the jersey easily once its stuffed into its pocket (I'm working on doing that while riding). I also started trail running/ orienteering seriously and this helped tremendously on cold and windy days. I read some reviews that this jacket isn't quite as windproof as others, but it is more breathable. As someone who sweats quite easily and profusely, I can say I am very happy with the performance of this jacket- something I don't often say. It's windproof enough to keep the chills out and when running you don't feel the sweat (or the wind evaporating the sweat off of your body). One drawback, although it is to be expected, is that it is a bit fragile on bushwhacks. On-trail and on-road no problem whatsoever, but once you're in the thicket I got one or two prickers through the jacket. Not noticeable, but when you pay this much for a jacket you do get a bit disappointed. The going does have to get very rough, basically walking through hedges, before I would worry about it holding up though. It definitely did better than others would I suspect. All-in-all this jacket is a perfect combination of breathability and windproofness. Durable and perfect to use in all but the most extreme conditions- I look forward to using it in other disciplines in the near future.

Bought it on sale for use in summertime or all year around in windy but dry conditions. A bit big in size, but perferct for use in winter/fall/spring with a insulation-layer. Breaths well, handles a few raindrops and packs down in its own pocket and clips into a belt/harness if not needed. Very satisfied!

Good jacket

I bought this jacket in anticipation to a trip to Disney World, and also this upcoming summer. The jacket is light, comfortable, and the fit is just as other Arc'teryx products - the sleeves are a bit long. But all you gotta do is adjust the velcro cuffs and they'll be fine. This jacket packs into its own chest pocket, which is a feature that I really wanted when I was looking for a jacket. In the summer, when I go to work in the early morning there's usually a bit of chill in the air that a short sleeve shirt isn't enough to keep my warm. But in the afternoon when I go home it's usually quite hot and the last thing I want is to drag a jacket around with me. The ability to stuff the whole thing in its pocket will be great as I can just shove the whole package in my backpack and not think about it again.

Versatile spring/summer jacket

Super lightweight and compact, perfect for a breezy day in the spring/summer. Works well as a windstopper and the colours very vibrant. I even dropped it in a lake once and it stayed afloat for a good 10 minutes giving me enough time to backtrack and retrieve it. Dries up very quickly. My only issue with this is that it runs a little short and the hood is small.

Great overall

I am using this as my all-round 'jacket,' for which I am likely blasphemously calling it a windbreaker. It is Nov. 11th in Tokyo at 15 degrees Celsius and I am still using it, frequently with my undershirt and work shirt 'base layers' or casually with just a t-shirt. I think 15 degrees is around the break point in terms of warmth, and I fully understand that the product is for wind. I would like to see more temperature thresholds for all products on this site and am always looking for them. I have used this both climbing, on a plane, and going to work, rain and shine (no rain on the plane though). While climbing, used this at the end of the day when the temperature cooled, started light raining and we descended from the short hike in trees and thorn bushes. Thorns pierced into this and afterwards I did not see any damage, though I was careful. As for the rain, the hood soaked through but the jacket's body DWR deferred rain well, I stayed dry. The jacket does not breathe much. When I break a sweat, the jacket pits will stink, even while using anti-perspirent. I don't sweat very much either. On the plus side, the smell dissipates from the jacket after hanging it overnight and I haven't had to try and wash it yet. For work, looks good (Iron Anvil). Only qualms would be the bright Arcteryx logo, for which will likely be on all of my jackets in the near future. The medium-size fits well except the arms are baggy and slightly long on me, for someone with long arms (6'1"). It is completely tolerable and I imagine this is room for a base layer when needed. Another con is that as a minimalist, I would prefer to pack this light jacket into my pocket, but it doesn't compress quite that much (I don't tend to carry packs/bags in casual settings). Great overall, despite all of my complaints above, (as an FYI and constructive feedback to the company) I am using this on a daily basis as my jacket. When the temperature drops a bit more, I will be swapping out and getting a softshell and mid-layer for the coming winter and spring seasons, respectively.

ALMOST returned it but really glad I didn't!

I ALMOST returned this jacket actually. I ordered this on arcteryx.com after the guys from the Twitter (@arcteryx) account suggested that this jacket is what I was looking for to suit my needs. When I got it in the mail, I was disappointed because it felt so flimsy compared to my Goretex Beta AR jacket. But, I decided to wear it anyway and I'm glad I did. I ended up taking this jacket everywhere. Originally I wanted a jacket to wear on my honeymoon when hiking in Hawaii (where it can get really windy at the top of some of the mountains but it's way too warm to wear any jacket down by the beaches). So I wanted something lightweight, packable, water resistant, and thin. Now this jacket has replaced my umbrella and also functions as wind shell. I carry it with me whether I'm going to a formal meeting (in my attache case) or whether I'm going for a walk in downtown Toronto, or whether I'm going for a hike. I use my Beta AR if I have to go out to work in a heavy rainstorm but for day-to-day use where the weather could be unpredictable, this has been my summer jacket of choice and I don't leave home without it now.

Best New Piece of Gear

This is the most versatile jacket I have ever owned. This jacket has been a second skin most of the spring, summer and fall. I have used it for backcountry skiing, trail running, mountain biking, and for my daily bike commute to work. I should qualify that I live in Park City, UT so not the most inclimate weather patterns, but I have had this jacket out in enough varied weather to comment on it's ability to hold up to wind and rain. It is correctly called wind and water resistant, but this jacket blocks wind very well. It also repels water, and will keep you dry in light drizzle, but won't protect you in an all out rain storm. This jacket is very tough. I have crashed through trees, and slid over rocks, and so far not a single slice in the fabric (which would be reasonable given the abuse it has seen). Wrap-up: lightweight, VERY packable weather protection that can be an everyday go-to jacket.

Great jacket

I used it for the first time, last week, for a 5 days hiking in Chamonix valley. The weather was not so good, going from 10°C to 20/25°C, moslty cloudy, ligth to heavy rain and a little sunshine. I use Squamish with a first ligth layer and with ATOM LT when needed. And the Squamish worked perfectly. The weather was changing all the time. With both first layer and Squamish, no need to remove the Squamish when I was too warm, I just needed to open it. While other hikers had to remove their jacket and put it in their backpack. Same thing when the weather became colder, i.e. I just needed to close the jacket. Very breathable, very usefull ! With a ligth rain, the DRW finish worked very well. And the jacket drying very quickly. With a heavy rain, something stronger was needed (rain cape for me as I lend my Goretex to my girlfriend :-)). And this morning, going back to the office by byke, I put the Squamish with a first layer. And it was just perfect !

Worth the money

I ordered a Houdini and it was small and light but I was unhappy with the cut, the noise of the fabric and the color wasn't great...so I swallowed hard and ordered a Squamish Hoody - and the Squamish is far superior to the Houdini IMO. Cut and fit are very important to me and the underarm gussets and cut make it far more comfortable. It's quality seems a step above, and the zipper and hood are both better too.

Great Climbing Shell

I almost always bring this piece with me climbing and it never fails to perform. The material is extremely comfortable and breathable, making it a perfect jacket to protect from the sun or stay dry in a drizzle. The DWR treatment on the face fabric is amazing at shedding water and the added bonus of the jacket packing up into the chest pock is a sweet (especially for the avid climber). The fit is great (doesn't limit mobility at all), so far it's been extremely durable, and finally it just looks so good!

Whenever I describe the Squamish to friends for the first time I refer to it as a "high tech garbage bag" as it reminds me of making emergency panchos back in the day. Originally I bough it just to use as a wind shell when sailing in the summer but it has since become a staple in my bike pack and trail running bag for either a compressible outer layer when stopped, when it is colder/rainier than expected or quite often once I'm done and heading for a post activity coffee/beer. Having loaned it to friends on occasion they are always surprised how warm it is for being so minimal. I wouldn't call it a rain jacket but again it does a surprisingly good job, a caveat is that it doesn't breath as well as other outer-layer options but that's the trade-off for its other benefits.

Good fit. Great over a sweatshirt in cold but not freezing weather. Also great over a t- shirt in cool and windy conditions.

Schade.
