Beta AR Jacke Herren

As it says "AR", it really is an all round jacket. Non of the other brands compare to this. I just came off a Columbia jacket and the waterproofing was garbage. The fit is astoundingly comfortable especially since I bought a size large to grow into. I stand 5' 11" and 155 lbs and this jacket will fit 3 layers under it. With proper layering this jacket is good below -20 C and well into the pluses. The material is a lot tougher than the other brands and when you feel it you feel the quality that goes into every jacket they make. This jacket has seen most of the west coast and I am hoping to take it to the rocky mountains in 2 months. Arc'teryx has really hit a home run with this jacket, keep it up. Everyone I know runs an Arc'teryx jacket and we all love them to death.

Hood is very flawed when used in challenging and windy conditions. Once adjusted, the hood billows out around the sides, funneling wind right into your face. Super unfortunate. Customer service cannot do anything and suggests that I just sell the jacket, indicating they do not stand behind their product. The fit is nice and the jacket is otherwise great until you’re nearing the summit of a mountain and the wind is crazy, the hood does nothing but funnel wind into your face. Therefore, the beta AR (all around) should be renamed beta ART (all around town) because it is truly designed to be worn around town and not to be used for challenging conditions. Get a Patagonia triolet or something similar. Also expensive, but the hood design is simpler and better.

I've owned a Beta AR for almost 10 years. During that time, I've skied, hiked, cycled, snowshoed, snowmobiled, traveled by boat, run errands, and pretty well lived in this jacket. In this humble reviewer's opinion, the Beta AR is and remains one of the single best designed pieces of outerwear - of any brand - for its combination of durability, versatility, fit and features. Allow me to explain. The fit: Most Arcteryx products feel like they were more or less made to fit me. The Beta AR is no exception. I'm 5'8", 160lbs, and bought a medium. My weight has fluctuated by +/- 10lbs in the last 10 years, and never once have I contemplated sizing up or down. The shoulders of the jacket sit in just the right place on my body, the chest has ample room for layering, but not so much that I look like I'm swimming in Gore-Tex. The drop hem covers just enough of my butt to keep it dry when it counts, and the hem cord tightens easily to fit over whatever I'm wearing on my bottom. I can comfortably lift both arms above my head without exposing my bellybutton to the elements. The sleeves are long, but so are the arms of the rock climbing fit models Arc'teryx uses, so that's to be expected. The Velcro cuffs solve that problem, anyway. The hood: Let me state for the record that I have a giant noggin. Most things - hats, helmets, whatever - barely fit my head. That said, I find the Beta AR hood perfect for my head. If anything, I wish the hood were bigger, because it doesn't quite fit over my POC Fornix helmet. My favourite hood adjustment is the one at the base of the neck, which does a great job at keeping the brim out of my eyes; most outerwear brands don't have this on their jackets. With the hood opening and head band cords both tightened, the hood forms a near-windproof seal around my head, covering my ears and my neck. With the hood fully tightened, I'm still able to turn my head almost 180 degrees without the hood shifting out of place. The other aspect of the hood design that separates the Beta AR from other jackets in the Arc'teryx lineup is the way the hood is sewn separately to the base of the collar. On -30C ski days, I don't have to pick between warmth and safety: I can wear my POC helmet and keep my collar fully zipped, with only my hood back. The pockets: People have asked me why I picked the Beta AR over the Alpha SV. $200 price discrepancy aside, the dealbreaker for me was the chest pockets. The Alpha has tiny pockets, with zippers set close to the main zipper. To access the pockets, you almost have to reach across your own body. By contrast, the Beta AR has two cavernous chest pockets. They'll fit a large map (or an 8.5"x11" sheet of paper folded in half), ski gloves, or my entire hands and a good part of my forearm. Back when I still had my Beta SL pants, I would sometimes carry them rolled up in one of the pockets. When the pockets are empty, they fold flat against the inside of the jacket and all but disappear. The material: Arc'teryx use n40r-x on roughly 60% of the Beta AR, and n80p-x strategically in hard-wearing areas: the yolk (shoulders), elbows, etc. I've skidded down steep icy slopes at 40km/hr on my back, caught tree branches while hiking, and one or two ski edges. After the third or fourth such mishap, I stopped checking for damage. The face fabric on the Beta AR looks as good as the day I bought it. No cuts, no abrasion, nada. As for breathability, I've worn hard shells made from both Paclite (aka budget Gore-Tex) and Gore Pro. The Pro material wins, hands-down. It feels better, lasts longer, and moves moisture more efficiently than 1.5 and 2-layer waterproof-breathable materials. Period. Is the difference noticeable? You bet. If you're reading this, and you're on the fence about spending $$$ on Gore Pro vs Paclite, consider how often you plan to wear the jacket and how long you hope to keep it for. If the answer is "a lot" and "for as long as possible", consider the $250 premium for Gore Pro money well spent. An $700 jacket that lasts you 7+ years is technically a $100 jacket.

I waited the end of winter 2018-19 before making any comments. This jacket is just perfect. I use it for snowshoeing, winter running, hiking, trekking and urban living. I went several time in many Quebec National parks. It's above expectations. The Goretex fabrics are strong enough to move through trees without thinking if any damages might happen. It's windproof, waterproof and breathable. However, it's really important to wash your jacket with the proper detergent in order to protect the longevity. Although it might be expensive, you won't be disappointed considering the versatility. Easily one of the best health and environment investment you can make.

The jacket itself is great, but it’s let down by the hood. Others have mentioned the sleeves are long - they’re perfect if you’re stretching upwards, but about 2” too long the rest of the time. You can tighten the Velcro at the wrists but that also makes the jacket warmer. The hood, though .. if I tighten it up enough so that I can see and have it turn with my head, the face is quite exposed - badly enough that water runs down my face and inside the collar. If I loosen it up so that it moves forward and protects my face more, I have to turn at the waist; if I turn my neck the head doesn’t move and I’m left looking at the inside. It also catches any wind coming from the front, offering little protection. I actually find I stay drier and warmer not having the hood up at all - just tighten up all the shock cords so that it’s snug around my neck, and wear a hat of some kind instead. It feels like it’d work well over my mountain-biking helmet, though.

I have owned a Beta AR for the past 3 years. I am 6'2" and sport a lime green L version of this magnificent jacket. I live on Vancouver Island and am an avid backpacker, snowboarder, hiker and trail runner. I have used this jacket for everything from shopping downtown in a downpour, leisurely hiking in a light drizzle on Sundays, backpacking all over Vancouver Island from sea level to 2500+ meters, trekking Vietnam in the rainy season, and everything in between. Love this jacket and can't recommend it enough. As with all Arc'teryx products, you get what you pay for. Quality is unparalleled.

This is the most functional jacket I have ever purchased. It is so well made it just works on all front wind, water, breath ability, temperature regulating just does what you want it to do. And if it gets a little too warm just open the side vents.

After careful consideration I purchased this jacket for my husband. It cost $575. He has only used it a handful of times and while using it last weekend in deep snow he got a rip in the Gortex fabric. I am not sure how this occurred but likely snagged it on a tree branch. I called customer service and they said I can send it in for repair at a cost to me and currently turn around time is lengthy due to the busy snow season. My husband has a Mammut shell jacket at the same price point he has used for years and has never had any issues with rips in the Gore-Tex fabric. I have never worried about ripping a Gore-Tex jacket, the product did not stand up to my expectations. The tear in this jacket occurred while snowmobiling. In the 30 years he has been snowmobiling he has never ripped a jacket in any brand.

great jacket amazing that after years of wearing my Theta AR they finally developed a jacket that is almost the perfect replacement I will say though that if you are going from a Theta to this that you will have to size up a size other than that this jacket is bombproof Having been in the industry for years I will say that there are other jackets but there are no equals

Jacket is exactly what i expected from Arc'teryx, I had an Atom LT for the longest time and it would keep getting wet from having mediocre shells over it. Decided it was time for an upgrade and the Beta AR is meeting all of my expectations. Living in Vancouver rain is fairly common and so it only made sense to go with the best. Water beads off like oil in a hot pan, it stops wind like a brick wall. Because of the impermeability you stay toasty even in chilly weather (with the right base and mid layers). Haven't had a chance to take the jacket up to the mountain yet but there's no doubt that its going to do exactly what its supposed too. As for sizing the jacket fits well though the body, however the arms are quite large. My atom fits well under it with no tightness, and there is still plenty of room for layers. Im between 5'8 and 5'9 150 lbs and went with the medium based on my chest size of about 38'. The jacket is not tight anywhere, as it is a regular fit, so don't expect it to fit and look like it's been tailored. Only one thing i don't recommend is wearing layers with a hood, the collar does not allow for a hood to lay down comfortably, however this can be netted by not zipping the jacket up the whole way, and if you choose to just put the hood on. Overall extremely happy with it, a bit overkill for commuting as i feel an LT would have been sufficient for my needs.

Arc'Teryx has really pulled off the impossible with this jacket. It might be said that with competing jacket features of lightweight, breathable, and waterproof as options - where others have said, "choose two" - with this beast you get ALL THREE IN SPADES. Almost feather light when considering what it delivers. Super breathable, yet windproof (seems impossible, right?) Built like a tank in terms of waterproofness and durability. I will own one (or more!) of these until the day I die.

This is my fifth one of these jackets (like a variety of colors). Always impressed with the design and construction. Great jacket for the wet Pacific Northwest - around town, hiking and on the slopes.

Got this jacket last year, put it through the ringer climbing and hiking in the Vancouver rain, just had to apply the first DWR treatment after a year of use.

Bought this jacket for the Laugavegur hike in Iceland - weather can be brutal so wanted a really solid mountain shell that would still pack down easily when not needed. Definitely a classic piece of kit but as with most Arc'teryx gear, priced accordingly. I consider them the Apple of outdoor apparel - beautiful designs, solidly built and work well but pricing (in UK at least) is often far more than comparable products from other high-end brands. Often £100 more than the comparable Mountain Equipment Lhotse, for example. Would have liked to see a two-way zip to make impromptu comfort breaks and harness adjustments easier but my main issue is the fiddly hood drawstring design. Hard to find the front drawcords by touch alone, and that's with bare hands. Becomes completely impossible with gloves on!

This jacket lives up to its advertising. Most wind and waterproof jacket I've ever owned and very lightweight. Has kept me dry in some monsoons. Not insulated, so there isn't much warmth other than keeping the wind off. I was right in between sizes. I wanted this to wear year round, which includes hiking, climbing, canoeing, camping, football games, snow sports, etc, so asking a lot out of the fit. I'm 5'9", 175, 32" sleeves, athletic build. The medium fit great with no or light layers, but was too snug in the shoulders if I really layered up with my down jacket, so I went with the large. The fit is good but the sleeves are very long at 35". This is a plus when climbing or hiking and need to reach, but definitely bunch up with arms at my side. The hood has great options to make it fit with or without a helmet. The quality is superb, but wish the sleeves weren't so long. This is a great jacket that hopefully will last many, many years. It ought to for the price.

I am 6’2” and 200lbs. Age 26. I lift weights and thus have a slightly bigger back and chest. The XL sleeves are way too long and baggy and the L is too tight on the armpits with a cerium lt down jacket underneath. I am not too sure what to do but I will be exploring other hard shell options since the XL sleeves are no joke way too long and way too baggy.

J’en ai 2, dont l’une a une dizaine d’années. Superbement conçues, pas de fioritures mais une efficacité et un pratique à toutes épreuves. Parfaitement étanches, quasi inusables. Que dire d’autre? Elles me servent en ville, en haute montagne, avec mes chiens. Un indispensable.

I live in the North East where it can be inches of pouring rain one minute and a blizzard the next. I purchased the Beta AR to commute to work in. I ride several trains and walk several blocks depending on which hospital I am working in. I have walked in torrential rain, and snow always remaining, warm and bone dry. The armpit zips help immensely with venting heat in the summer during a storm and layered with the Arc'teryx Atom hoody, I remain warm and dry in the most extreme of snow events. I have done everything from commuting, to hiking, to shopping in the city in all types of weather and have no fear due to my Beta AR!

I have had this jacket for over a year now & I must say it works exactly as it is advertised. It works very well in the cooler spring/fall weather & keeps me dry when I am outdoors. With ample layering, this jacket works pretty well with the harsher winter conditions here. The jacket fits slightly on the larger size so you have plenty of room for layering your base/mid-layers. The only flaw I've seen through wearing this jacket through owning it for a year is that the tape seam inside the hood has starting to peel a bit. Other than that, it is a great shell jacket suitable for many conditions.

My previous shell was an Alpha LT. I don’t notice any significant increase in weight moving to the Beta AR - but there is a noticeable increase in wind proofness and weather protection. I havent had the jacket for long but it’s easy to see that it will be more durable as well. I have the Tui colour which is like a dark navy - it looks great and can do double duty as an urban rain jacket without looking too out of place. But ultimately this jacket is for all season protection in bad weather - and the price is a reflection of the fact you’re buying a lightweight fortress that will protect you in all types of weather.

This is the best jacket I have ever owned, I have 2 now and love it for both work, skiing and around town. I work on a golf course in Alberta and the jacket covers every aspect of weather we work in with great style, fit and breathability. I am 6'2 and 190lbs and got a medium, it fits great because i dont like a lot of layering. This is comfortable with a thin down layer underneath.

I bought this coat to layer on top of my Cerium LT jacket and it was a perfect match. The material and waterproofing are top notch and better than my Beta SL jacket. I highly recommend it.
