Excellent jacket so far...

I just bought this jacket and am impressed with the product though it’s what I’ve come to expect from Arc’teryx. Incredibly well made with attention paid to the details of construction. To be fair it’s spring time in the High Sierras so i won’t truly put the jacket through more severe conditions until next winter. Today we had 50+ mph gusts and temps in the low 40s on the mountain and i didn’t feel a thing under the jacket. Wore a long sleeve thin base layer only under the jacket and was very comfy. Again next winter will bring harsher days than today but i expect it will perform just fine. I like the pocket configuration and pit zips, but wish it had a sleeve pocket. It’s handy for many things beyond a ski pass, but that’s a small nit for such a great jacket. The sleeves felt a little long but overall the fit is like other Arc’teryx jackets. I’m 5’6” `50lbs and the size Small is ample with plenty of room for layering. I picked up the orange color (blaze) and it looks sharp.

Excellent replacement

I purchased the latest "Next Generation" version of this jacket, and it is everything I was looking for in a replacement for an older Patrol Jacket. It is lighter, and very slightly shorter, but still has pit zips and the two large front pockets. The older Alpine Guide did not have the pit zips - and I am pleased to see them in this version. The fit is also perfect for me - roomy enough for a mid-weight down jacket underneath, and yet not too big when just wearing a base or thin mid layer - the arm length is also perfect (for context I am 190cm/ 6'3" & 93 kg / 205lb and have long arms)
Q: Pros:
A: Great fit. Addition of pit zips
Q: Cons:
A: None
Q: Activity
A: Ski Touring / Climbing / Skiing

Yes, I recommend this product.

Exceeds Expectations

I purchased this jacket primarily for backcountry skiing applications. It has exceeded expectations. It has pit zips for temperature regulation, the chest pockets are large enough to fit climbing skins and a thick field notebook, the cut fits well under a pack and it has already survived getting poked by several sharp branches. I think it is appropriately sized...I am 6-2, 175 and often wear several layers including a thick puffy. I purchased a large. Some might regard the fit as baggy, but it is perfect for me.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Quality pro product

I've got the 2019 version of this shell. I've had many over my working life in the mountains, including several Arc'teryx ones. This is the best. Stripped down yet solid, works well under a harness, and light to wear. But most of all it works in Scottish winter. Wet &humid or freezing & hoared up, it just works. Bonus points for the bright hood. My clients love this.
Q: Pros:
A: Bomber shell which works hard
Q: Activity
A: Mountaineering

Yes, I recommend this product.

Would be 5* if they did a black version

Great jacket, crazy warm and I love the orange flash on the hood. Love the two chest pockets. However, for professional use black is a must - these colours look nice on a ski slope, but they show the wear and dirt too quick for professional clothing.
Q: Pros:
A: Warm, build, orange flash on hood.
Q: Cons:
A: Colour selection, need it in black.
Q: Activity
A: Rescue work

Yes, I recommend this product.

Dirt is not as much a problem if you wash your garments regularly. Most people don't. Just wash with a free and clear detergent. There are more expensive tech washes specifically for this purpose, but I don't know if the tech washes are any better (or any different from) the widely available free and clear options from most major detergent brands.

Peculiar design decisions

The some of the design choices on this jacket are difficult to understand. No pit zips makes this a difficult jacket to wear during high output activities. And the lack of a shoulder or arm pocket reduces the overall usefulness of the jacket. The other reviewer likes less pockets because they don't weigh themselves down as much? Just be responsible with how you use them. Having the option can be incredibly useful, not having the option isn't a plus. When I use this jacket I'm typically on a call and wearing a chest rig making the front pockets inaccessible. The previous iteration was very well setup for SAR and 1st responder use. I'm not sure who this was designed for. Why no pit zips?
Q: Pros:
A: Robust material, very waterproof
Q: Cons:
A: No pit zips, few pockets.
Q: Activity
A: SAR

No, I do not recommend this product.

Customer Support
Hi There, Thank you for taking the time to reach out and share your thoughts on the Alpine Guide Jacket - Dope Dye. We're sorry to hear the features on this jacket do not meet your expectations. When designing the Alpine Guide though, minimalism and resistance to the elements were at the forefront, doing away with excess bulk (zippers and laminating components) and instead focusing on durable components such as the Gore-Tex Pro material. We appreciate your comments nonetheless and will be sure to bring this to our design team's attention. You may also want to look at the Ski Guide Jacket which will have the features you are after. If you have any additional comments or concerns, please feel free to contact our Customer Service Department at 1-866-458-2473 (available Monday-Friday 9:00 AM- 4:00 PM PST), and one of our representatives would be glad to chat with you. All the best.

Bomb-proof piece: excels in bad weather

I've got two seasons in this jacket, in environments ranging from the Alps to East Coast ice to the Rockies. I've worn it for work as a patroller, and for play skiing and mountaineering. I expected high quality from Arc'teryx in a pro piece, and haven't been disappointed. The fit is trim. Enough for a moderate mid- and base-layer, but still svelte and flexible enough to work and exert oneself in with ease. Sizing is true to size for traditional Arc'teryx pieces. Features are well thought-out. From the collar-mounted Recco reflector, to waterproof zips, to just enough pockets for essentials, but not so many that you can load yourself down like a pack animal. If I have any complaints, it's just this one: the red dope dye fabric seems to get visibly dirty fairly easily. The jacket sheds most of the grime easily when washed normally, but it would be nice to see a fabric choice that shed dirt and detritus as easily as it sheds the weather. Definitely a worthwhile investment for a mountain professional.
Q: Pros:
A: Weatherproof, Nice Features
Q: Cons:
A: Shows dirt and grime easily

A: Skiing, Mountaineering, Climbing, Patrolling

Yes, I recommend this product.
