Insulated jackets for cold-weather missions

Designed for all-mountain adventures in sub-zero conditions, an insulated jacket delivers dependable warmth without adding unnecessary weight. As part of a technical outdoor clothing system, it helps bridge the space between a fleece midlayer and weather-protective outerwear.

Across the Arc’teryx range, lightweight insulated hoodies, vests and parkas serve different roles: some pack small for rest stops, some add core warmth under a shell jacket, and others give fuller coverage when temperatures stay low.

Synthetic insulation vs down jacket – what’s the difference?

Insulated jackets are designed with different activity levels and conditions in mind. While down jackets prioritise lightweight, packable warmth, synthetic insulation is effective for sustained activity and damp environments.

For high-output hiking, climbing approaches or ski tours, breathability matters as much as warmth. Synthetic insulations such as Arc’teryx Coreloft™ are engineered to regulate temperature during active movement and compress easily without losing their structure. They also retain warmth when damp and dry quickly for reliable performance in wet or changeable conditions.

On cold, dry days, a down jacket offers an exceptional warmth-to-weight ratio for maximum heat retention and minimum bulk, packing down easily into tight spaces in your pack for rest stops and belay duty. A down parka provides extra coverage for everyday use over the winter.

Jackets featuring our Down Composite Mapping™, like the Cerium range, use down in areas prone to heat loss and synthetic insulation in areas where moisture tends to build up, for next-level cold-weather performance.

Some insulated styles are designed to sit under a GORE-TEX® hardshell jacket when rain, snow or wind increases. On dry, fast days, a light softshell or windshell jacket with a durable water-repellent finish may be enough over lighter insulation.

Frequently asked questions about insulated jackets

What is an insulated jacket?

Men’s and women’s insulated jackets contain down or synthetic insulation to trap body heat for extra warmth on cold days. While generally used as an outer layer, lighter styles can also be worn under a waterproof jacket for protection from rain and snow.

Is an insulated jacket for winter?

Yes, an insulated jacket can be used for winter, but it is not limited to one season. Lighter insulated hoodies and vests work well in cool shoulder-season conditions, while warmer parkas offer extra coverage on colder days. For wet winter weather, look for styles with wind- and waterproof GORE-TEX® protection.

Which type of jacket is best for extreme cold?

For cooler conditions, a down jacket offers the most efficient heat retention. Longer parka styles offer more coverage for freezing days. If wind, snow or rain are forecast, pair your insulated jacket with a hardshell or choose a style with GORE-TEX® protection.
