Here's my review I left on reddit comparing the Macai shell with my Beta AR - https://www.reddit.com/r/arcteryx/comments/1h30e38/review_macai_shell_vs_beta_ar/ ---- Sharing this post for my Drop Hood lovers since I haven't found anything similar on reddit. I recently purchased both since they are the only drop hood options. For reference, I'm 5'9 180lbs and use the Medium Beta AR for skiing and daily wear in the rain. I'm slightly biased since I owned a Beta AR in the past but wanted to give the Macai shell a try. Macai Shell Pros: Many pockets which I find valuable Better color options for 2024 season & Currently on sale Flannel backer so it's warmer than a standard shell Same velcro system for the hand holes as the Sabre and Rush which is more robust than the Beta's Cons: The flannel backer makes the jacket stiffer Not as roomy as the Beta AR, you may need to size up. Found it tight around my waist Smaller hood, only noticeable when wearing a helmet The removable hood makes the collar a little narrower around your neck and chin compared to the Beta Powder skirt is not removable Two chest pockets are small, about 2 inches deep. Beta AR Pros: Lightweight jacket with better ROM. It doesn't feel like you're wearing a jacket at all. More room for layering and not as tight around my waist Excellent do it all jacket Cons: Only 3 pocket options. Really annoyed this jacket doesn't have a ski pass pocket Bad color options for 2024 Slightly shorter cut so your lower back and butt aren't as protected when you sit on a ski lift. I suggest pairing this with bibs when skiing. All in all, I will be returning the Macai shell. I found the Beta AR to be more versatile and freeing. Feel free to ask any questions you may have :)

This is a great jacket, both performance and comfort is great, I am going to buy another color, it is recommended

On cold and windy days, you could feel the cold on the sides of this jacket

Definitely a good replacement for the 12 year old theta AR that it took over for. Great ski jacket. The front pockets are too small to be of much use though.
