My reviews of Arc'teryx gear share a common theme: range. That's what I look for in gear. I live in the Rocky Mountains and can experience every possible weather condition in a single day, with a temperature swing of 11º C (20º F) between shadow and sun. I do a lot of physical work in the mountains. This lightweight hoody is good for cool mornings, around 7ºC (45º F), with light activity and a sun hoody underneath. This comfort zone extends into the high teens (C) (mid-sixties F) with moderately vigorous activity. Working up a sweat underneath isn't a major issue as the material is breathable enough to allow some refreshing air to enter, so you won't get much more soaked in sweat than you would without it. Keep in mind, this hoody isn't going to cut the cold of a sharp wind. If the sun's going down and you've got a light sweat going, when you stop, you might want to throw a layer on underneath. It improves the warming ability of inner layers by limiting the wind, but it definitely doesn't stop it. It's no replacement for a hard shell; it's an entirely different piece of gear. Increasing the warmth of mid-layers while maintaining some breathability is why I got it, and it's why I'm writing this positive review. It does that well. Another thing it won't do: keep you dry. However, nothing keeps you dry when moving in the rain, so the next best thing is gear that dries out fast, which this does. A benefit of how it limits wind without blocking it is that after you've gotten wet in the rain, you won't freeze when it stops raining and the sunshirt you're wearing underneath dries out. Well, you won't freeze as much as you would without it, which is plenty of reason to consider it a pleasure to have after a light summer rainstorm. But, in a storm so bad that you need to stop moving, you want a hard shell. The cut is ...roomy in the belly. The shoulders, chest, arms, articulation, and length are perfect. But, the belly does not flatter like other Arc'teryx gear. In winter gear, this would be a source of a bad review because the bellows-effect of so much additional room in the waist would make a jacket pointless. In the summer, however, the bellows-effect is unnoticeable or may actually add to the feeling of breathability and transpiration. Besides, there are cinch cords at the hem to lock in a little extra warmth when needed, and it hangs pretty well on the body with a slight cinch. The Stone Wash blue is :chefs-kiss:. There's something very comforting about this color, like a favorite childhood hoody. It looks nice with everything, and if you have blue eyes, your special someone will notice and say it looks good on you.

Too Baggy

Too baggy. A different cut to any other Arcteryx I have, although that's not my main gripe. I returned the jacket over a month ago, and still haven't been reimbursed. Arcteryx keep saying they are investigating, the courier stipulates an investigation takes 6 working days, but won't go any further as the account belongs to Arcteryx, I have tried multiples times to resolve via email, to no avail. There is no clear policy on lost/returned items, which is crazy for such a large company. I have had to contact my bank to query the transaction. Really disappointed with Arcteryx

It was too baggy.

I like Arcteryx stuffs in general but this jacket is not one of them. I was baffled with its fitting. Compared to other Arcteryx jackets I have this one was so baggy. I returned it and got Gamma Jacket instead, which has better fitting.

Revised version is great for broad shoulders.

I love this jacket. A lot of people seem to be saying that it’s too baggy but comparing it to the previous Gamma lightweight (gamma SL) it’s only slightly looser. the shoulders are broader and the waist is slightly wider but it’s still cut better than %95 of competitors jackets. The cut is now more designed for layering. It’s by no means a bulky jacket and appreciate the added chest pockets. For reference I’m 6’ 200 lbs and lean due to constant cycling, hiking, and skiing. The large fits me very well. Again, I do have broad shoulders and that could be why it fits me so well. I also have a high ape index so the sleeves are near perfect. I still wish the wrists and hem were stitched instead of glued. Maybe someday I’ll get my wish. The chloris is a very interesting and unique green that looks better in person than on the website or in photos but ultimately I sent it back and kept the black jacket. I think it will work well for winter mountaineering as I run very warm. I use it as a first shell and If needed I add a hardshell over the top and then belay. I hate shedding layers and this will work slightly better for me in the cold than the gamma SL has. I’ll keep the SL for cool weather cycling. I do feel that it’s too loose to use a summer shell (again it’s not baggy) unless you’re wearing it casually.

Follow up to my initial review. I ordered the canvas as well and this color is a paper bag brown. Or more of a light khaki. I thought there would be a typical color discrepancy and maybe it would be darker but no, it’s a really undesirable color. So it’s going back. Cant imagine wearing this in the wild. Make brighter colors!

Great jacket, one issue.

Excellent jacket for light, warm weather activities. More relaxed fit than my older, regular Gamma jacket. One issue on my new jacket to note. One of the chest pocket zippers is upside down. It still works, but this shouldn’t happen on an Arc’teryx product. Not worth the hassle to return.

Gamma Lightweight with 4 pockets!

I was initially hesitant to order the new Gamma Lightweight because of some reviews stating the fit to be too boxy. To be honest for me the fit has improved drastically. I'm at the upper limit of Large in almost all Arc'teryx jackets that I have tried on. I bought the previous version of this jacket and it was slightly too tight for me, but this one is absolutely perfect. For me the chest pockets are also welcome improvements. For reference I'm 181 cm and 96 kg.

Not right this time

I’ve owned Gamma softshells (both regular and lightweight options) for many years (15+?), and they are a staple of my outdoor wardrobe for hiking, climbing, and general outdoor use. I was hopeful that this new lightweight version would replace my aging original, but sadly not: - The fit is very boxy, more like streetwear than the performance fit I expect from Arcteryx. - The hood has good volume adjustment, but no peripheral adjustment, so gapes wide open at the sides. Will catch the wind wonderfully in windy conditions and blow off your head. - The chest pockets are very welcome, but are very small and are made from multiple layers of fabric, adding to weight and bulk and reducing breathability over the chest. Would be much better if they were constructed like the hand pockets with just the outer fabric and mesh back. - The worst thing IMO is the front zip, which feels like it should be on an ultralight windshell, not a hardworking softshell. It’s way too flimsy, kept jamming at the bottom, and I nearly broke it twice just trying the jacket on. Very sad about all this. I’ve returned the jacket for refund, and hope it gets updated (and improved) in the future.

Really versatile jacket

Haven’t had much time to test it but so far it has fulfilled my expectations. Really light but seems durable for its weight. Really happy having two chest pockets and two hand pockets (this should be extended throughout the line), it really increases functionality with very little weight penalty. Breathes really well but protects you from wind. Don’t expect it to withstand rain, it isn’t designed for that purpose. The hood is comfortable and well designed as usual from this brand. I like the color too (chloris). In warmer seasons I prefer colors that blend with nature. One dislike is that I find the sizing more boxy than before (preferred previous version) but this might be something personal for me. This is the perfect jacket when you don’t expect rainy weather and need something more durable than a Squamish, or as an active outer layer keeping a light hardshell on your backpack just in case.

One of Arc's Best Softshells

Pros: - Arc's best softshell, good balance between breathability and windproofness in high output activities - I like the new MX style pockets! More pockets the better imo in a shell Cons: - Poor color selection. Light green, poo colored, white, or black. Come on Arc, give us some dark blues, purples, olives, orange, reds. I got the black after trying the other colors. - Price went way up this year, and I don't know why. - Sizing is weird on this jacket. I wear Large in Arc always, but the L in this is massive with a huge waist, not trim fit at all. It's closer to XL in other Arc jackets. I ended up sizing down to Medium which fits pretty well.

Nice upgrade to the Gamma SL

Nice jacket. It's similar to my Gamma SL (same fortius 1.0 fabric), but with twin chest pockets which is why I bought it the day it came out Mar 2024. The caveat: I got the black and it's not black - it's like a deep gray or faded black. Very disappointed. I had my black palisade pants on and they don't match. Also I like the looser fit unlike the Gamma SL which was more fitted.

This replaced a 15 year old Arcteryx hard shell that saw wear and tear 12 months a year , year in and year out . So far it’s done exactly as I expected . It shed water like a ducks…., back ! Great lightweight softshell for climbing

Great lightweight softshell for climbing in UK autumn, winter and spring. The material is great to block out wind and is surprisingly abrasion resistant for how thin it is - there's no sign of wear after my first year of use. The arms are roomy so there's very little lift in the jacket when reaching up for holds. The fit isn't really slim so easy to get additional layers underneath as the weather gets cooler, without being too baggy during the warmer months. The hood fits over a small climbing helmet (BD Capitan s/m), but is a little tight on my larger helmet (Petzl Meteor m/l).

Too light?

I bought this 2 years ago. We went to NC, Outer Banks, Kitty Hawk, etc. Obviously they are famous for their wind. This seems to be reasonably windproof and balances with breathability pretty well. However, I tend to like a little more protection and willing to sacrifice lightness. The material is very light and thin and has perfect balance of slim fit with zero restriction of movemet.
Q: Pros:
A: Light
Q: Cons:
A: Maybe too light

A: Hiking
Q: Your Height:

No, I do not recommend this product.

Great Summer Jacket

People usually recommend Gamma Hoody over the Gamma Lightweight Hoody, but I found the Gamma Lightweight Hoody is a perfect option for me. I am using the Gamma Lightweight Hoody to block sunshine during hiking, and it is a surprise that it is very breathable even under the sun. I am also putting it on when entering a room with too much AC. overall, it is a perfect jacket for the summer

Great product

Nice and light for hot rainy days in the keys. It has a great range of motion and breathability for fishing, and you don’t end up more wet from sweat than from rain if going without. Lots of your products seem to be cut for petite euro men, but this gives enough room to wear over bibs without being baggy at all.
Q: Pros:
A: Breaths well
Q: Cons:
A: None so far
Q: Activity
A: Offshore fishing
Q: Your Height:
A: 6,1

Yes, I recommend this product.
