Bought this for a recent trip to Japan. We knew the weather would be colder than we were used to (50°-30°) and I wanted a jacket I could use in the cold & rain in Tokyo. I was pleasantly surprised that this jacket worked out perfectly; great fit, perfect pocket placement (i.e. for Cell phone), and great protection from the elements while never being too hot. I plan on getting another one.

I own 5 of these jackets, some with hoods, some without. I wear them year around, by themselves and with my various Arcteryx hardshells...Been buying Arcteryx ofr over 38 years, so I must be great products to keep me coming back...

I've been looking for a do-it-all softshell layer for ages now and I feel like I finally found it. There's enough space to layer a base top and fleece underneath it without feeling like I'm cinching the zipper over my layers. I've worn this in (windchill-adjusted) weather down to -10 C with such a system and it's shown its value in spades. I wouldn't wear this jacket during moderate- or high-output cardio since it feels more hefty, but there are lots of other choices for staying warm and dry while you move.

Don’t care what temperature this jacket is rated for. I wore it across 3 continents and many temperatures in the sun and in the snow. The reason it’s so hard to find anywhere, is because it’s that good. Don’t buy one, there will be more for me. Seriously though, Arc’teryx should consider a pocket or two on the inside. All else is great.

Durable, versatile jacket for everything

I bought the Gamma MX jacket 7 years ago, and use it for almost everything (everyday city wear, city biking, hiking, rock climbing, spring skiing). It's still holding up like new. Sometimes people would tell me they like my jacket and they're in total shock when my response is "I got the jacket 7 years ago"

Great jacket for cooler weather days

I got this thinking it would layer well but really didn't work out well for that. It does hold up to some light rain and wind well and on cooler days it helps keep the cold bite out.
I love the jacket just ended up changing the use case for it. Only thing I could imagine being slightly better is perhaps a little more insulation to hold up to cold.

5'10 and 150 lbs. A small would work for a tight fit but I like being able to throw a mid layer like the Atom LT under it for additional warmth when needed. It isn't waterproof but it does just fine aside from heavy and consistent rain.

My son ended up using my older Gamma MX Hoody and loved it so much I decided to pass it down. Recently received my new version which has what I enjoyed in the older model plus some nice revisions. Tough outer fabric, great pockets and cuffs, comfy fleece lining and updated side and rear hood pulls. Keep it up!

This is my second Gama mx jacket that I buy and I really like it. They did a couple changes over the years. One that I like are the sleeves they are more loose. They one that I didn't like was the end zipper, too small when you have gloves.

The perfect all-around softshell

I purchased the Gamma MX hoodie after a few years of waiting and trying to maximize use out of my older Arc Epsilon LT, maybe incorrectly thinking there would be too much functional overlap, but the difference is night and day. The Gamma MX is basically the epitome of what I would be looking for in a non-WPB winter softshell: pliable, stretchy, extremely durable, and surprisingly warm. The fit is also much more forgiving than the Epsilon which I now reserve for cold weather cycling. The Gamma MX is now my go-to winter shell on days when precipitation isn’t going to be an issue, and over a lightweight synthetic fill jacket like the Atom LT is about the most winter jacket I need in the northern mid-Atlantic US.

Regarding breathability I would say the Epsilon LT is more breathable (or at least FEELS more breathable) just because it's a thinner overall layer than the Gamma MX. I feel like I can wear the Epsilon in warmer weather and higher output without discomfort. The Gamma MX IS a little heavier but is surprisingly stretchy - I feel like I have better range of motion in it compared to the Epsilon.
I haven't handled a Gamma LT in-person but from the website photos the weight looks similar to the Epsilon in weight but without the gridded fleece interior. So if you're familiar with the Epsilon LT - the Gamma LT may be on-par or slightly lighter, while the Gamma MX will probably be heavier and warmer.

A great shopping experience. It is very practical for daily commuting in the city. The material is also very comfortable. The only regret is that although it is very good, it is not worth the price. I hope it can return to the original intention to bring more good products instead of being commercialized.

The hood is perfect for my #petzl helmet and totally adjustable for wear without one, besides the couffs have built in strechy tape so you can easily put on another layer and gloves.

I’ll start by saying this is one of my most used pieces. When you know the weather is mostly fine but want a soft shell to block some cold or keep thorns and branches from snagging your insulated layer this one is a winner. My only complaint is that the most recent version wrist cuff lost the elastic gusset type cuff in favor of an open cuff that’s strangely grabs my hand/arm hair. Not sure what the intent is with this but it really bums me out. I traded back for the previous model shortly after getting this one.

Ich habe zahlreiche Jacken von Arcterxy, eine Alpha SV , eine Atom LT sowie eine Procline hybrid und die Gamma MX. Wenn ich eine hergeben müsste, dann wäre es sofort die Gamma MX. Ich wüßte keinen Einsatzzweck ausser in der Stadt spazieren gehen wozu die Jacke sonst geeignet wäre. Kaum Wärme, nur kurzfristiger Wetterschutz. Sie fühlt sich super an, sieht auch toll aus, aber das war es dann schon. Absolut keine Outdoorjacke und viel zu teuer. Die Gamma MX wird die erste Jacke sein von Arcteryx die ich wieder verkaufen werde

I bought this jacket believing it was a mixed weather jacket, however am sorely mistaken. It does not hold up to any wind nor sub 40 degree temperatures. And it’s fits too tight (especially in chest and sleeves) for any comfortable use of an extra insulating layer. It repels only very light snow and very light rain for a short while. In medium rain, you have maybe 20 minutes. In heavy rain, you will be literally drenched (and cold if temps are below 60) on the inside (completely soaked through) within a few minutes. The jacket looks cool and that seems to be it’s sole utility. It does not breath well and is heavy thus is not suited for any sort of medium to high output activities. I cannot imagine what type of outdoor activity for which I would pack this one; maybe very casual walking or easy day hiking in the fall? Unfortunately, I purchased the jacket at Christmas time, am only now discovering these flaws, and cannot return it or I certainly would. I am thoroughly disappointed in Arcteryx on this one.

The Gamma MX Hoody is designed for mixed weather conditions, and as such it features a softshell water resistant fabric. That said, it is not designed to be fully waterproof.

Excellent for sprong, autumn conditions and in winter when skiing Whistler in minus 20oC I use it under my Sabre AR or Theta AR. Versatile great-looking performance jacket. My advice, get one and if looked after it will last 10 years. Even smart enough to wear to the office without looking like a climber.

I am very happy with this layer, both as an outer layer on dry summer days, and mid layer on winter trips. Many pockets are useful, and the fit is great for climbing. Warm enough to wear as a mid/outer layer on winter backcountry ski trips, winter mountaineering, etc where a goretex shell would cause too much moisture build up.

Would be perfect if sleeves were longer

Bought this jacket at the store in San Fran. Took me like an hour to decide if I wanted it cause I couldn’t get over the fact that the sleeves are about 1/2 inch too short. Eventually they talked me into it but I’m still having doubts and may return it. Other than that the jacket looks and feels perfect.
If you are 6’4 like I am (or taller) with a large “wingspan” beware, you might have the same problem. Which is sad because I bought an XL.
Only one of their jackets had long enough sleeves but it was a paper thin raincoat.

Maybe consider their Gamma LT? Just a bit lighter and thinner but longer in both sleeves and waist. One of the best softshells around.

Versatile and warm

I bought this looking for a jacket to wear while bicycling on colder mornings. Ive been happy so far. With appropriate layers it provides good warmth. It also has a hood that goes over my helmet. I havent had to wear it in the rain yet but seems like it would repel a steady rain. I have been pleased that it can be used as a lighter weight jacket to and from work/outings when not riding my bike.

Excellent Protection for Active Endeavors

I bought this last summer in preparation for cooler weather activities. I tested it in heavy Pacific NW rainstorms and in moderate snow/wind on Rainier. The quality is superb. The shell product does a great job of shielding wind as well as keeping me dry in light to moderate precipitation. If there is any weakness, I would say that when you stop to rest, a belay coat is a good idea to have available. But when you're active, the Gamma MX performs above expectations.
