Question 1

I just ordered the Sylan pro shoe and it doesn't have nearly enough support on the sides for me. I rolled my ankle 22 times the other day doing a trail half marathon. Do these shoes have more or comparable lateral support to those shoes?

Helio, Arc'teryx Guest Services · Accepted Answer

Hi there, thank you for reaching out. We are truly sorry to learn about your experience with the Sylan Shoes on the trail. That sounds frustrating and uncomfortable. The Norvan 4 Nivalis GTX Shoe Men's is designed to provide more lateral support than the Sylan GTX. While the Sylan is built for speed with a default Comfort Fit, which offers extra room and a less snug hold, the Norvan Nivalis is designed for stability in rugged winter conditions with a default Precision Fit. The Precision fit that these shoes offer secures the foot more firmly across the width, reducing side-to-side movement. It also features a dual-density midsole with a firmer medial post for added stability, plus an over-ankle gaiter for extra support. If you prefer more room, you can size up for a Comfort Fit, but for maximum ankle security, we recommend sticking with the default Precision Fit. For more information, please feel free to visit the Fit & Sizing section on the product page.

Question 2

Is this shoe fully waterproof

Seymour, Arc'teryx Guest Services · Accepted Answer

Hi Jasmine, thanks for reaching out. The Norvan 4 Nivalis GTX Shoe features a waterproof GORE-TEX upper and an over-the-ankle gaiter that helps keep your feet dry. This construction blocks wind and does a great job of preventing water from getting in. We hope this helps!

Question 3

Several people in the comments section have said the shoes can be hard to put on. How do you do it?

Luna · Accepted Answer

Hi Sophie, thank you for your question and for checking out the Norvan 4 Nivalis GTX Shoe! The over-ankle gaiter does an amazing job sealing out snow, water, and debris, but it can make putting the shoe on a little tricky. Here’s what we recommend:

1. Check the tongue fabric: Make sure the fabric behind the tongue is lying flat, as it can sometimes roll when you slide your foot in.
2. Use the pull tabs: Insert your foot from the top and grab both pull tabs to help guide the shoe on.
3. Take your time: It might need a bit of force, so we suggest sitting down while you do this for better leverage.

Once they’re on, you’ll love the secure fit! We hope this helps!

Question 4

Is this shoe versatile enough to wear in the spring summer fall in the rain. or is it meant to be just a winter trail shoe?

Seymour, Arc'teryx Guest Services · Accepted Answer

Hi there, thanks for reaching out. The Norvan 4 Nivalis GTX Shoe is intended to be used for mountain running in harsh winter conditions. It features GORE-TEX waterproof protection, deep lugs that work well in packed snow and icy terrain and are microspike compatible. You can absolutely use this shoe in spring and summer as well. It will still provide reliable grip on wet terrain and keep water out during rainy days or muddy trail conditions. The main difference you may notice is that the deeper lug pattern can feel more pronounced when walking on flatter surfaces. We hope this helps!

Question 5

Hi. Can these shoes be worn indoors as well for a long period of time?

Seymour, Arc'teryx Guest Services · Accepted Answer

Hi Alan, thanks for reaching out. The Norvan 4 Nivalis GTX Shoe is built for varied terrain and features a 6 mm lug pattern for grip and stability. When you wear it indoors on flat surfaces like cement, you may feel the lugs underfoot, but it can absolutely be worn for extended periods if that works for you. We hope this helps!

Question 6

would it be good for very cold temperatures? in cities?

Sophie · Accepted Answer

Hi Marie, thanks for reaching out! While this shoe is designed for running on varied terrain, it's versatile enough for everyday use in city environments. It features a watertight GORE-TEX upper and an over-ankle gaiter to help keep out snow and moisture, keeping your feet dry. Although the shoe isn’t insulated, its construction helps block wind and retain warmth. For very cold temperatures, we recommend pairing it with warm, moisture-wicking socks to improve comfort and insulation. We hope this helps!

Question 7

Hello, Is this the Norvan 4 Nivalis a unisex shoe, or is the men's shoe different than the women's shoe? Thank you!

Seymour, Arc'teryx Guest Services · Accepted Answer

Hi Robert, thanks for reaching out. The Norvan 4 Nivalis Shoe is offered in both men’s and women’s versions, with the only difference being the colour options. The overall design, materials, and performance features are the same across both. We hope this helps!

Question 8

Can you provide details of the cushioning?

River · Accepted Answer

Hello LuCo, the Norvan 4 Nivalis offers a balanced and responsive cushioning system designed for winter trail running. It features a 4mm molded open-cell PU sockliner for initial step-in comfort and breathability. The dual-density CMP EVA midsole combines a softer 45 Shore C foam for general cushioning with a firmer 55C medial post to enhance stability and support on uneven terrain. This setup provides a smooth ride while maintaining control on technical surfaces.

Seymour, Arc'teryx Guest Services · Accepted Answer

Hi Aaliyah, thanks for reaching out. The Norvan 4 Nivalis is made with a waterproof GORE-TEX upper and an over-ankle gaiter to help keep your feet dry. While the shoe itself is not insulated, the construction does a great job of blocking wind and preventing water from getting in, which helps retain warmth. Pairing them with a warm, moisture-wicking sock is the best way to stay comfortable in cold conditions. We hope this helps!

Question 10

Seymour, Arc'teryx Guest Services · Accepted Answer

Hi Buck, thanks for reaching out. The upper on the Norvan 4 Nivalis Shoe is made from 85 percent nylon and 15 percent spandex, which provides noticeable stretch for comfort and flexibility. It also features an easy-adjusting speed-lace system for a secure fit. We hope this helps!
