3rd in a Series of Alpha SV's since 2006

Yesterday I received the latest in a series of 3 Alpha SV shells that I've worn since 2006.
I wore my first Alpha SV shell all day, every day on a self-guided ascent of Denali in May 2007. On that trip, this shell's robust design was key to my comfort low on the mountain and it played a key role in withstanding Denali's heinous weather above 19,000 feet on summit day. This shell went on to serve me well for years after in adventures in the Lower 48, too.
After I wore that first shell out, I wore the 2nd in this series of shells for everything from technical winter ascents and ice climbing outings in Colorado, to a ton of in bounds and backcountry ski days in all kinds of weather. Last year that shell was a key piece of gear on a week-long backcountry trip in BC where we experienced deep, deep powder and low temps of -35 degF.
My latest Alpha SV shell promises to deliver more years of equally stellar performance. And its design meets the unique needs of my build. For example, this Alpha SV shell has a hood that will properly fit over a helmet worn on my enormous gourd on top of my excessively long turkey neck. I've never owned another shell that could do that.

Enttäuschende Haltbarkeit trotz vielversprechendem Start
Ich habe mir die Arcteryx Alpha SV mit großen Erwartungen gekauft. Optisch ist sie ohne Frage eine tolle Jacke, das Design ist schlicht und funktional, und sie fühlt sich auf den ersten Blick sehr wertig an. Auch die Wasserdichtigkeit ist ausgesprochen gut. Doch nach drei Monaten intensiver Nutzung auf meiner Weltreise bin ich ehrlich gesagt enttäuscht.
Ich habe lange auf diese Jacke gespart, weil mir Qualität, Zuverlässigkeit und vor allem Langlebigkeit extrem wichtig sind – besonders auf Reisen, wo ich mich auf meine Ausrüstung verlassen muss. Die Alpha SV begleitete mich von eisigen -20 Grad im Schneesturm in den Bergen, Regen, bis hin zu wärmeren, windigen und sonnigen Tagen. Ich nutze sie also flexibel, aber genau das sollte sie ja eigentlich aushalten.
Nach etwa zwei Monaten musste ich jedoch feststellen, dass sich eine Naht an einer Tasche gelöst hat und es droht der Kleber sich langsam zu lösen. Wenig später riss dann auch noch ein Gummiband an der Kapuze direkt bei der ersten Nutzung nach zwei Monaten, was mich wirklich gewundert hat. Abnutzung ist natürlich bei so einer Belastung völlig normal, aber dass solche Mängel so schnell auftreten, hätte ich nicht erwartet – vor allem nicht bei diesem Preis.
Ich bin gespannt, ob sich am Ende meiner Reise herausstellt, dass ich nicht lieber eine andere, möglicherweise günstigere und robustere und hochwertigere Marke hätte wählen sollen. Eine Alternative habe ich jetzt nicht für meine Reise.
Noch habe ich Hoffnung, dass die Jacke durchhält, aber mein Vertrauen in ihre Haltbarkeit hat bereits einen deutlichen Dämpfer bekommen.

I'm 6-1 and 195 pounds using the XL size. It's just a bit tight in the snow with two layers underneath, especially if you put gloves in the front zip pockets. But the XXL is too baggy.
LOVE IT - Solid shell, good weight for warmth, wind proof, water proof, maneuverability.
HATE IT - No hand pockets!!! What a colassol mistake!!! The volume of pockets is waaaaay too small/limited. You'll need to always have a backpack for anything you need to carry. Hand pockets (like on Beta shell) would have solved everything. Their argument is that the pack strap covers hand pockets, but that just means don't use them when you have a pack on. When you don't have a pack, like skiing, boating, day hiking, going to work, hand pockets are a must!!! Overall, I would NOT buy again or recommend to a friend. I'm pretty disappointed that I'll be stuck with it for 10+ years.

Since it is designed specifically for alpine and rock climbing, the Alpha SV Jacket features a pocket configuration that makes them easily accessible when using with a harness. We recommend looking at our Beta line for alternatives that feature hand pockets. We do, however, appreciate your comments and we will make sure to pass them to our team.

Good until it falls apart

Completely failed after 4 years of use. I love this jacket, but it has a disappointing lifespan for the price. It feels like a shield of armor at first, but I started experiencing a small amount of delamination after 1 year of use, and all but one of the spring clasps for the hood and hem stopped working. One on the right side of the hood broke completely and is loose inside the jacket. After about 3 years of use the delamination grew considerably, now at 4 years about 30% of the jacket is delaminated, it has lost most of its waterproofness, the Velcro on the cuffs are blown out, and one of the zippers is starting to fail. It was washed according to instructions with tech wash and reapplying of DWR treatments, and was used heavily but that is literally what it is advertised to do. Seems like a lot of others have experienced the same thing, I don't buy that the delamination is from sweat and grime and not washing enough, because some of the first areas to go were areas that get the least wear, like the outside of the shoulder where the ski pass pocket is. I have a long sleeve Arc'teryx shirt that is just as old with many thousands of hard miles on it that is holding up better than their severe weather jacket, I'm just confused and disappointed why it falls apart so much for how good it should be

Alpha SV Poor Quality

Alpha SV was Purchased in Feb 2024. Used for a total 120 hours of resort skiing; delamination appears around the wrist area. The product has been regularly washed by Arcteryx store. I brought the jacket back to the store for a warranty claim and was told these delamination do not affect the performance of the jacket. I'm totally dissatisfied with made of the jacket that was priced over $1,000 and Arcteryx's response. I recommend shopping elsewhere. I would give a 0/5 Stars, not 1 of 5.
