Super Robust - Simpel - kein Schnick Schnack

Serves its purpose and then some more...

This is an excellent backpack that excels at its primary purpose: alpine and fast-and-light missions. It’s versatile enough for daily use if you don’t mind the tube-style minimalist design and top-loading opening. The pack is so comfortable on my back that it has replaced my regular daily-use backpack. With a small torso, I appreciate that it sits high on my back, but its minimalist design does come with trade-offs. During an approach in the Eldred Valley (about 1.5–2 hours), I carried a single rack with some doubles and around 15 kg of gear. While the pack handled the load, the base dug into my lower back, causing discomfort and blisters. I found a workaround by loading the base with something soft, like a puffy or an extra layer, but I recognize this pack isn’t designed for carrying heavy loads, so this is a minor drawback. One suggestion I had was if the back panel were removable, it would be easier to pack this bag inside a larger pack for trips like those in the Bugaboos, where you might haul gear up to Applebee or East Creek before transitioning to fast-and-light missions. Overall, it’s a fantastic pack for its intended use, with thoughtful adjustments needed for heavier loads or extended trips.

Best 30 L pack out there!

There is so much to like about this pack. First, is size. It fills a perfect spot for alpine travel and sport climbing. I might even try to get in an overnight with the expandable top. Second, if you pack this right, it is remarkably comfortable. Shoulder straps are the best of any pack of this size. Third, the fabric weight and durability are remarkable. Fourth, the thing has almost all you need and nothing you don't. I wish Arc'teryx would put a simple hook inside to clip a water bag, but I just tried out their water bottle shoulder thingy and that works like a charm so maybe no need for the inner clip. It is pricey but if you use it a lot, more than worth it.

Update: delamination but still love the pack

Alright so I left a review last summer for this pack. I'm such a fan. I've used it for all my mountaineering objectives: didn't really touch it in the winter but started using it again this summer. Unfortunately, early in a week-long mountaineering trip this summer, the inner pocket delaminated, leaving me with only the one pocket on the outside. I'm not sure what caused it but seems a few other reviews have mentioned it. I have yet to contact customer service about it (been busy... oops!) but I honestly still in the meantime purchased another one in a different colour because I really do love the versatility and lightness of the pack. Another thing that could be improved overall, as mentioned in another review, is that the inner pockets, when packed, can restrict access through the top, but don't know what the answer is for that! Anyway hopefully the delamination issue gets addressed in future iterations.
Q: Pros:
A: Lightweight, waterproof
Q: Cons:
A: delamination, pockets
Q: Activity
A: mountaineering, climbing, hiking

Yes, I recommend this product.

Customer Service
Hello there, thank you for your review of the Alpha FL 30 backpack! We're glad to hear it’s been a reliable companion on your mountaineering trips, and that its lightness and versatility have made it a favourite. We’re sorry about the inner pocket delaminating, though. While rare, this issue has come up, and we’re constantly looking into ways to improve durability in future designs. We also appreciate your feedback on the packed inner pockets restricting access; it’s helpful as we explore functional adjustments. When you have a moment, please reach out to our after-sale team, they’d be happy to support you with the delamination issue. Your insights are invaluable as we strive to make our gear even better.

Superlight, comfortable pack

Superlight pack that has the pure essentials, great for climbing, you keep full range of movement of your arms. Also great for multi-day hiking trips if you want to focus on being fast and light and don't need the extra pockets. Material feels durable, and you could tell they put a lot of thought into making it comfortable and look great, very Arcteryx-esque. Would recommend!

Nice light striped down alpine pack

Nice light striped down alpine pack. Nothing but the essentials. Only used a couple of times but so far great for what it is designed for. The surprize is the two generous zippered pockets to separate out essentials and keep things safe, one inside one outside. I though these pockets would be smaller but pleasantly surprised. Perfect size between my mutant 52 and 22. Looking forward to many alpine adventures. This size will prop be my most useful alpine pack.

Simple clean design

After an alpine climbing summer I really like this pack. * This is a no frills simple backpack that is waterproof. * Size is "large" for the 30l * No significant wear noticed * Ice-ax fasteners and bunge cord for poles or crampons Potential drawbacks - If you fill the 2 small pockets with stuff they "restrict" the access to the large compartment (don't have a solution for that)

Classic climbing pack made better!

I had the Alpha FL 30 since the first version. It just keeps getting better, streamlining the pockets onto the roll top makes some things more accessible, while the front zipper pocket got bigger for other essentials. The extra gear loops on the side of the pack adds more variety and adjustability if you know what to do with them. My favourite all-season climbing pack because it is so tough, abrasion and cut resistant, because the pack was still intact after falling down 200+metres to the bottom of the multi-pitch climb.

Quite simply the best alpine pack ever built.

I’ve had this pack since 2016 and I still have my original. I’ve got it in every size including the 20L that they just came out with. Honestly if they had it in the larger sizes like 60L and 70L then I’d have no reason to own any other packs.

Simple, sits well above a harness.

It was my go to rock and alpine bag. The new design is flawed though, there’s no way to strap boots or skis to the sides. You removed the opposing flat loops, they were made to for a ski strap to slip in perfectly. It was replaced with a single large loop, it’s useless. You need to have two for it to work.
Q: Pros:
A: Fits well above a harness
Q: Cons:
A: Side loops don’t work anymore

Yes, I recommend this product.

Love this bag

love this backpack for climbing and general traveling. I like that this thing is extremely minimal and lightweight but has a lot of attachment points for my gear. It also serves me well for short travel / trips. feels like a nice duffel bag i can wear on my back. It has a nice spot on the top for rope if I dont want to carry an extra rope bag. The volume of the bag is a nice size and i never feel like i need more room. The material seems very sturdy and durable but i dont really drag my stuff on super sharp edges to test it out.

Poor quality

Loved this backpack initially, then the interior pocket detached itself from pack. When you place items into pocket they just fall into main compartment - less than ideal! Poor quality! I reported this to Arc’teryx Customer Service who were initially quite helpful but I have had no further contact with them, quite a sub-optimal situation!
