Hello Anna, great question! All our GORE‑TEX shells, including the Beta Jacket, use a membrane tested to a 28 000 mm water‑column rating for waterproof performance. We don’t assign a numerical breathability value like MVTR or RET, since those lab tests can vary a lot depending on the method and don’t reliably reflect how the jacket performs in real conditions. Instead, we focus on how the full garment manages moisture and airflow through its construction, patterning, and ventilation features.

It’s built with a durable, tightly‑woven 3‑layer GORE‑TEX face fabric, which is designed to resist abrasion and friction from straps, hip belts, and regular pack use. Because the surface isn’t a knit (like fleece), there’s no loose fiber structure that would pill under pressure or rubbing.

How do I take care of the gortex waterproofing

Hi Ankita, thank you for your question! The best way to care for your GORE‑TEX garment is to wash it regularly and reapply the Durable Water Repellent (DWR) treatment when needed. When left unwashed, dirt, oils, and sweat can compromise performance over time. Regular washing and DWR re‑treatment help ensure long‑lasting waterproof protection. While the GORE‑TEX membrane itself is fully waterproof, if the outer face fabric stops repelling water and no longer beads, it may appear to “wet out.” This does not affect the waterproofness of the GORE-TEX membrane; it simply means the DWR treatment needs to be refreshed. As a general rule, use your best judgment: if your garment looks dirty or is no longer beading water, it’s time for a wash.

I see the hood can be tightened from the back, but is there anything to make it  fit closely around your face so that cold/humidity don't get in? You used to have toggles for a truly snug fit.

The Beta Jacket was designed as a durable and highly versatile mountain shell. As the base model in our Beta line, it does not include as many features as the Beta AR, SL, or SV styles. The Beta Jacket features a low‑profile StormHood™ with a single rear pull adjuster, designed to sit closer to the head while still maintaining peripheral vision and providing a more streamlined fit. As a result, there are no additional front locks to cinch the hood more closely around the face. In comparison, the Beta AR, SL, and SV feature a helmet‑compatible StormHood™ designed with additional adjustment points. These extra cord locks are intended to accommodate a range of helmet sizes and allow for a more customizable fit, both with and without a helmet. We hope this helps!

A local store had the Beta AR and it bunched under the arms, fabric was stiff, wondering if the regular beta version would do the same or not?

Hi Furey, thanks for reaching out. The Beta Jacket features a thinner face fabric than the Beta AR Jacket, which means it will be less crinkly and stiff overall. Specifically, the Beta Jacket uses an 80-denier fabric, compared to the 100-denier and 80-denier GORE-TEX PRO ePE fabric on the Beta AR Jacket, resulting in a softer and less rigid feel. The Beta Jacket in a size M is also 2 cm smaller in the chest width compared to the Beta AR Jacket, so it will fit slightly smaller around the chest. We hope this helps!

For everyday use in a rainy city, is the regular Beta jacket enough protection, or do I really need the heavier Beta AR for just walking around town?

It is fully waterproof and windproof, and the GORE-TEX with C-KNIT backer makes it quieter, softer, and more comfortable for daily wear. It also features a low-profile StormHood that works better for casual use. The Beta AR Jacket is built for more demanding alpine conditions. It uses a heavier-duty 100D face fabric and features a GORE-TEX PRO membrane. It also includes features like a helmet-compatible hood and pit zippers, which may not be necessary for city use. Hi there, great question! The Beta Jacket Women’s has a Regular fit, which is designed to layer comfortably over midlayers like the Cerium Jacket, which features a Fitted fit. Our Fitted fit is made to stay close to the body through the chest and waist, and fits comfortably under outer layers in the same size. If you prefer a more streamlined look, staying with your usual size (XS) will work well since the Beta Jacket is cut to allow room for layering. If you’d like extra space for mobility or a looser feel, sizing up one size (to a size S) is also a good option. Even though it is not specifically designed for snow sports, it will offer protection from wet and windy conditions and is versatile enough to be used while snowboarding. That said, it doesn’t include some of the key features found in our ski and snowboard-specific jackets, like a powder skirt, pit zippers, helmet-compatible hood, or an RFID pass pocket. If you're looking for a jacket with snowport-specific features, we recommend looking into the Sabre, Rush, and Macai Jackets. We hope this helps!
