One of the best airbag backpack!

Excellent airbag pack. At first, I was a little bit skeptical regarding comfort, but I was wrong. The backpack fits nicely, feels very light, and really doesn’t bother me while skinning or skiing. I chose the 42L and it’s just perfect. Even fully loaded it feels good. You can also adjust the straps easily if for some reason you carry less stuff someday. The airbag system is awesome and the battery status indicates us well its capacities (good for 2 deployments for at least 8 hours). I used it on very cold days and found that it wasn’t impacted at all. I gave a 4-star rating only because I found that the access for the « rescue » compartment could be improved. You can either access your probe and shovel from the side zipper or from the top through the main compartment. It took some time for me to get used to it. It’s not a deal breaker for me, but I would suggest to practice a littlw bit to have a really quick access to you probe and shovel should before heading to the mountains. I would also appreciate a snowsaw compartment within the « rescue » compartment.

Great avalanche backpack

I have been waiting for this backpack since it was announced. All I can say is that it was worth it. I’ve already had the chance to test it extensively this winter—ski touring, freeriding, and hiking in ski boots. No matter if you use this backpack fully loaded or relatively empty, it has an excellent fit. The backpack is excellently made, very lightweight, and also extremely durable. Finally, another Arc’teryx backpack that is so well-designed and thoughtfully constructed

Enammered by how light this pack is. Unlike other avalanche airbags, the straps are all adjustable to ensure a perfect fit. I have used this ski touring and sledding and even with a big bulky full face helmet I am able to comfortably situate the pack on my short frame with easy for full neck and shoulder mobility. The pockets are set up similarly to the regular Micron minus the roll top feature. I choose the 42 as I am notoriously "mountain mom" with extra layers, big first aid kits and sometimes a cheeky camera in the bag - all of which pack nicely into this bag. If I am keeping it super light I can also tighten it down so it rides like a much smaller pack. Big fan of this airbag - makes it an easy yes to choose as my go-to bag with the weight, structure and fit combo. I've used it 10 days so far this season with zero complains. :)

I used the rucksack on several backcountry trips now as well as for freeriding or family resort Skiing(when daddy is allowed, he goes freeriding). I must say I love the way it is designed. The emergency equipment department is accessible from the outside as well as from the inside while having the pack standing upright. The all-around zipper gives very quick access to everything in the pack as long as you vaguely know where it should be – imho much better than a pack loaded with multiple sachets and (mesh-) pockets adding up in weight. The front compartment has plenty of space for skins, crampons, and smaller ice axes inside the pack while probe and shovel shaft are held in an always accessible holster – I consider this a brilliant solution. Leading groups for the DAV and coaching instructors towards their examinations a see a lot of creative solutions pack and packing vise – not always good ones. I love this pack – with my old ones I always cut tons of unnecessary stuff of, I don’t feel like doing this with this one.

Excellent airbag - minor tweaks would help

This is a fantastic pack overall! It is very light for an airbag, super easy to repack the airbag, and has lots of room to get what you need (including helmet) inside the pack. My complaints are mostly around the avalanche tools (shovel / probe / saw) pocket. the straps on the sides and zipper configuration make accessing tools somewhat inconvenient.

Exceptionally light, some design flaws

I haven’t deployed or used this pack just yet, but have tried it on with my backcountry kit inside. This backpack is exceptionally light, wears well, has a large capacity, and uses contemporary capacitor-based airbag technology. The face fabric is tougher than the old Voltairs and may even be a hair thicker than the old Naos/Arrakis packs (please bring these back!!!). There’s a lot to like about this pack but I think some fundamental design flaws that are puzzling. Like most backcountry ski/avalanche airbags, this pack has a dedicated compartment for an avalanche probe/shovel. However, the side access zippers are encumbered by two compression straps making it somewhat finicky to get to even without winter gloves on. The top access into this compartment which is necessary to use the probe/shovel handle sleeve requires entrance into the main compartment via a zipper and then a second zipper in the face fabric that separates the main and avalanche rescue compartments. Functionally, I feel like this is too many steps/annoyances to get access to avalanche rescue equipment. If you had to practice/time getting your probe and shovel out of this pack vs. one that has unencumbered dedicated access to the avalanche rescue compartment, it’s probably be >15 seconds longer. Probably not meaningfully different survival but dealing with finicky access to your backpack may contribute to anxiety and make it more difficult to keep your cool during a real or simulated rescue. The compression straps kind of encourage top-side access which would normally be ok, but the bulbous avalanche airbag and the fan located at the top of the pack rather than more centered or at the bottom of the pack necessitates undoing or rerouting the compression straps for meaningful access to even the main compartment. I think the semi-clamshell access harkens to some design elements of the old Altra packs which had some of the best access to the main compartment, but the compression straps and lack of buckles for rapid undoing of the compression straps just makes this pack a bit more cumbersome to use. Some folks might be concerned around the high center of mass for the airbag component of the pack but I found that the pack actually carries very nicely, especially when loaded, even nicer than some of the black diamond or BCA packs. I think buckle-based straps that can attach to the leash points on the pack can solve some of my concerns. If I keep this pack, I will probably try to only use side access for the avalanche equipment and keep the probe and shovel handle out of the sleeve. Glad Arc’teryx is still making innovative equipment like this. Also glad that they’re not charging extra for the charging cable ;-)
