I have several Gamma LT's that I use for hiking year round in Alaska. I decided to get another one in the Heritage colorway. The new revision actually fits pretty well, the length is still good to wear with a climbing pack, and it layers well. The Wee Burly is hands down the best soft shell material imo. It breathes very well, but is almost impervious to wind. I've worn it in extended light rain and the DWR worked well enough to keep me dry. It's my go to hiking jacket, and if it releases in Vitality I'll probably end up buying another one 🙃.

I use the Gamma Hoody as my primary softshell for ice/mixed climbing. Note, while the Gamma MX is the marketed product for this pursuit, I find that the Gamma has one things going for it that the MX does not: The longer hem/sleeve length means I can wear a Medium, with the benefit of the slim fit, and it stays tucked into my harness. I usually pair this with Rho Wool top and Konseal fleece, and then an Atom vest over the top for colder temperatures. I find the DWR is sufficient for blowing water off of ice falls, but if the water is really raging over the line of the climb, you should be wearing a hardshell. The shell material is durable enough for the rock abrasion that comes with mixed climbing, and it is light enough to pack down well if you're ditching the layer on the approach/descent. The main drawback I've found is the lack of a chest pocket, instead having 2 handwarmer pockets. The handwarmer pockets often sit under a harness, making them shallower, if not unusable. I'd like pocket access for storing phone/snacks, but extra gloves get zipped inside all of the layers, hence why it's extra important that the hem stays under the harness!

The jacket is top-notch workmanship and the materials seem sturdy and durable for outdoor use. Tested under heavy water the 'waterproofing is excellent, clearly with use and washing I don't expect it to stay that way even though I use professional products for washing and DWR treatment. What I didn't like: I bought a size M and yet it seems to me that you have increased the size, the jacket seems a bit wide. The cuffs have no adjustment or closure, I expected at least a tightening system. Hood too wide, it's okay if you have a climbing helmet, but if I have to climb I don't use a jacket like the Gamma. In conclusion a very good product. Maybe more colors available.

I bought the regular Gamma hoody as I didn't want any insulation (got a HH Odin softshell for that) and so far I've been really happy with it. Fit is good (large, 6'2, 195 lbs) plenty of length in the arms and waist but not baggy. My only gripe on fit is that it gets tight under the armpits with anything more than a couple of light layers (base layer and light or mid layer fleece). For me I couldn't wear anything heavier underneath like an insulated layer. It's decent on wind resistance and the DWR holds up well for light rain and drizzle. It's breathability is very good and opening the mesh pockets does help with venting. Not as good as pit zips but you can notice the difference when you open the pockets to dump some heat. I'm not doing anything requiring a helmet so the hood is massive. That said, you can cinch it down sufficiently. Overall it suits my needs when I want a light weight, wind resistant, water resistant, non-insulated jacket for light Fall days or heavier exertion on cool days.

So the website says the chest is smaller on the revised large fit yet there’s more room than my 2019 gamma Lt with a “larger chest” For me it’s just roomy enough to fit both a midweight baselayer and a thick fleece under it. I could potentially use this for skiing and I intend to. It’s interesting because my 2019 barely fits a RHO LT under it. Anyway, I’m happy with this new fit as it’s more versatile. For reference I’m 200 lbs and 6’ with broad shoulders. I am athletic and cycle almost daily. The previous version made my shoulders feel constricted while this revised fit does not. I feel that much of the time the fit of arc depends more on frame size than body mass. This is a little loose in the torso but by no means boxy. Also this is the first product from arcteryx in a long time that I’ve purchased in the black that doesn’t have a horrible chemical smell. The length is great and I appreciate the extra rear coverage. I’ll never understand the glued hem but it’s something I’ve accepted. For my frame this updated version fits me better for layering and I am happy with it.

I just received this jacket and have not yet had a chance to actually use it, but I do have some initial thoughts. The material is excellent—more substantial than the Gamma Lightweight, but unlined and better for 3+ season use than the Gamma MX. It has just enough stretch and seems to be a great compromise between windproof and breathable. I’m 6’3”, 170 lbs and a Medium is a perfect fit for me. I have long arms, but the sleeves are just the right length. There’s enough room through the chest and shoulders to layer a lightweight puffy vest or thin fleece to extend the jacket’s use into winter. The body length is also excellent—not so short that a mid-layer hangs out below the bottom hem, but not so long that it feels like a raincoat or cagoule. I love the classic red (Heritage) color! Nice and bright, without being neon, and perfect for the mountains. I knocked one star off my rating for two small, but not insignificant, details: Firstly, as other reviewers have noted, the interior chest pocket is much too small to be useful. It’s a logical place to keep a phone (camera) for easy access, but anything bigger than a flip phone or early generation smartphone is not going to fit. I actually love that the cuffs do not use Velcro closures. In my experience, they are unnecessary and wear out far too soon. However, I was disappointed that the fitted cuff panels did not utilize a slightly stretchier material. I do not have unusually large hands, but I struggle to extricate my hands from the sleeves when taking off the jacket.

Material and workmanship are spot on. The revised fit is a fail. I’m 5’6” , 150 lbs, every Arcteryx item I have is size small and fits perfectly. However the revised version of the gamma fits like a wetsuit. You cannot wear anything but a t-shirt underneath the jacket. If you are not a skiing young boy, will not be able to move once you zip in.

Good softshell. Currently I mostly use this for commuting around the city and hiking. So far very durable and feel very solid. Great to pair with some sort of fleece for layering.

Really nice soft shell, exactly what I was looking for. Stretchy material with nice rain and wind blocking ability, although I haven’t put it to the test yet. I was surprised with the sizing, the XL fits more like an XXL, as I wear an XL or L from all other companies. Very comfortable and the style/cut is nice. Only gripe is the price. You can get a similar product for around $50 less ($250). My price tag came with the old price, $260, which seems more appropriate… they lost me on a hard shell with pricing, which is a shame

I’ve been using this jacket almost everyday for work over the past year. So it’s seen about 7months of 4-5 days use. I’m out in the feild working everyday. It looks like the day I got it. Breaths well, blocks wind. I would not say it’s very water resistant. Soaks through in about 15min. I don’t like the hood,it’s way to big to use without a helmet.For a lighter jacket I just don’t think having a full on hood is useful. I would agree with the fit being off. I bought a med. and large and the difference between the 2 was drastic.

It would be a great jacket if it fit. I’m learning that “revised” means “we’ve made it smaller.” For reference, I’m 5’10”-180lbs-athletic build. I bought a medium because that’s what I’ve bought in the past. This jacket fits like a small. I have to fight the sleeves over my arms if I want to wear a light flannel or similar long sleeve under. The listing says “regular fit” but it’s more like a fitted. It’d be cool if the company stopped making fashion pieces for a Milan runway and catered to the industry which helped create the brand for what it is today. Do I own other Arc items-yes, will I continue to buy their items-also yes.

I’ve been using this soft shell for several weeks now. The hem length is long enough to keep the waist covered when arms are raised. The hood has good adjustment ability, enough to work with or without helmet. Pockets are functional, large, and well placed. Like always, fit is spot on, and perfectly sized for an athletic build.

I have the older version of this jacket. It's one I use a lot, but the fit is a little tight to fit comfortably over much insulation. When they brought out this amended version with the "regular" fit, I thought I might be able to use it over a Proton LT or something similar. This was the reason I bought another. However, the fit is not so different. I cannot fit it over anything other than a base layer without feeling like my movement is getting restricted a little. However, I'm still glad I got it and still give it 5 stars. The new version is a little shorter in length. This is a trade off. The old version always seemed just a little too long for me, but when it's very wet this extra length is welcome as the water runs off onto your thighs rather than a little higher (making it look like you wet yourself). The shorter jacket looks nicer and I like the bright red colour - will make it much easier to find me if I need to be rescued :-) . If you properly maintain the DWR, these jackets can keep you dry for quite a long time in heavy rain, even if you are moving fast and generating a lot of heat. They are durable and the hood is excellent (with or without a helmet). They are much more breathable than a hard shell and they are extremely durable too. Really versatile piece of kit, and well made too.

I’ve worn this a couple times already in the rain and it works great. Very waterproof. Great quality, with a bit of stretch to the material which I like. Only down side is the size of the hood but I know it’s designed to be used with a helmet but still. The hood is a bit too large and then with the wind, the starts to blow off my head.

The jacket itself is very nice and in terms of overall design is what I wanted. However the new sizing is a disappointment. I am between medium and large but size large Arcteryx shells have always layered well for me. The new approach of keeping medium the same but making large sizes larger means a large fits more like an XL. The jacket is so large it is still baggy over a base layer with a light fleece and a Nuclei FL. This means also that the medium is still too small to layer well for me. At the end of the day people between medium and large probably won’t be happy with either. I don’t understand this change and I won’t be ordering online from Arcteryx because of it. As much as I like this jacket I will probably return it.

I bought the predecessor of the Gamma Hoody in 2016 and have worn it hard for every conceivable purpose. From the first crisp fall day to the last cool day of spring, this rocks for ice climbing, hiking, trail work, days-in town, and everything in between. Due to the fit its great to layer, but its cozy enough that I can throw it over a short sleeve and still be comfortable. I will be 100% replacing it with another the instant I have to, but I hope there is a repair in its future when the time comes, because it has come to be like that childhood emotional support item that you couldn't get rid of! Also the Arc'teryx colorways always ROCK! Pick something bright to be a statement piece!

Had a gamma hoody for over 2 years now and not found a single fault with it. perfect for anything and really light weight. just wish there was some adjustment on the wrists.

I got this to replace my 2005 Gamma SV and it has not disappointed. Great all around outdoor piece on it's own or with thin layers. Water resistant, allows you to move and the cut is great. I have commuted, skied, hiked and traveled the world in this jacket and it is up for any task. It's the perfect piece to grab on your way out of the house. If you plan to layer with anything other than a lighter fleece I would suggest sizing up.
