nearly Platonic ideal

I'm 6'2" and 170# and wear a 40L suit. I tried sizes medium and large; the medium fits perfectly, with adequately long sleeves and enough chest room to layer something underneath if you must. Center back length appropriate for my medium tall frame. Beautiful nearly bombproof piece, good for 40F to -10F.

You Never Know

I really appreciate the reviews so I'm writing one. This is my tenth or so piece of trx (my gangsta abbreviation), so that's part of the story. I'm 6.2/230 fairly good shape. Large upper body. Yes, my legs are too small. Working on it. I truly appreciate the chances that trx takes with their stuff. It never stops amazing me that they just don't go "down the middle" with anything they do. So, you just gotta try some of their stuff. When it works, it's great. When it doesn't, hey. I warned you. This thing is light. LIGHT. Kind of freaks you out and makes you think it can't handle the -10. But it can. It seals very well. Best cuffs I've ever seen. Absolutely amazing RANGE. You can have this on when it's 40 and you're fine. You just don't "heat up" in it. But it seals and works well down to -10. It's been very cold in Chicago since I bought this. Pockets/storage are somewhat limited because it's "stylish" and not too bulky. Seems like a trade off. It's damned expensive. Either you're a crazy who loves the details or you're going to wonder who would blow a thousand dollars on this. One or the other.

Everything I wanted and more

I have wanted this jacket for a while now and didn’t want to spend the $925 price tag. Well this winter so far has been brutally cold and I am so happy I did. I am able to go outside with this jacket and a T-shirt in -10F and not be cold. It also has great temperature regulation and even in 40F I do not overheat. This jacket is absolutely amazing and I could not be happier. Don’t let the price tag turn you away. It is worth every single penny they are asking.

best jacket ever

i think this is the best jacket ever. before i bought this jacket i was going through a winter jacket every 2-3 years because i couldn't find anything i liked or could keep me warm. i heard extremely good reviews on arcteryx and their products so i looked at them and believe it or not i bought mine because it had the black outside and that dark red inside. once i got it i fell in love with it. i use it every day in canada weather it be going to the mountains to just going to the mall or grocery store. its super warm and i have had it now going on 4 years and it looks and performs as new. BEST JACKET EVER! Highly recommend it!

The best jacket ever, I have tried a lot of different jackets but this is by far the best invest ever. Other jackets are big and clumsy, but the Macai is sporty look, amazing fit, and warm. The materials are amazing and feels like you are getting a hug when you wear it. The details of this jacket speaks for itself. Buy it and try it, you won't regret it.

Excellent all-in-one jacket the way it should be

Excellent all-in-one. I am not a fan of "shells" or 3-in-1s. I don't like wearing tons of layers and 3 in ones always seemed silly to me because the components are never what you want. It is harder and harder however to find a classic ski parka these days since shells pack the racks at most stores. This jacket is really excellent. Used last season in Breck and Big Sky, February bitter cold days and late March warm and rainy. This thing will keep you dry and warm or dry and comfy in the 40s if needed. It fits extremely well, the neck isn't too tight like many jackets, the hood fits perfect over my Smith Vantage helmet, the pit zips open wide when it's warm. And despite the down this jacket is not "puffy". My only critique so far is a small tear in the sleeve forearm that I got trying to push a tree out of the way in the glades that was too large to be pushed. Contacted Arc-teryx for a patch kit but they weren't too helpful with that. The pockets are good but not excellent but I'm not a fan of lots of stuff in my jacket pockets anyway so not a big deal for me. I would definitely recommend this jacket to anyone looking for the best and not wanting to compromise.

Perfect jacket for blizzard conditions

I have only tried this jacket on one day during blizzard conditions. Temperatures were about 20F with 55MPH gusts. The resort (mammoth) was in the process of closing down due to dangerous conditions. Visibility was maybe 10-20 feet before you lose track of the person you are following. I was only wearing a next-to-skin base layer with this jacket. While on the lift, I was very comfortable at the beginning (due to heat retention) but a little cold towards the end of the lift. While snowboarding, i was HOT, HOT, HOT!! This is probably the biggest pro (or con). You're going to be hot anytime the temperature is above ~30F. If you want to be nice and toasty during high output activities then this is your perfect jacket. It is really nice to have a single jacket and not worry about wearing multiple layers. Go with a less insulated jacket if you don't like feeling this way. Wind blocking was amazing! As warm as this jacket is, it does not restrict movement. I wore the hood over a helmet and forgotten about it. The hood configuration really turns with your head. You really don't even notice it. Chest pocket is incredibly small. I couldn't figure out what I would use it for. Length is perfect. I have no regrets with it's length (vs the Fissile). I also have the Theta AR to compare to.

Fantastic resort jacket

This pretty much ticks all the boxes for a resort jacket for all but the warmest of days, enough room for a mid on the coldest of days and keeps the snow out on the miserable days. Had a few black run disasters and the only damage has been to my pride! ;-) Super hard wearing. I would question the chest pockets as I haven't found a use for them and would have liked to see the Slide’n Loc on this and the Chilkoot pants I'm also in a quandary about the sizes, I'm 5'-10" got a genuine 33" waist and a 46" chest. According to the size chart I should wear an extra large. I realise there is supposed to be room for layering but an extra large is like a dress with room for both me and my wife! I also realise I'm a little out of proportion but to get the body and arm length right I've gone with a medium with it only feeling a little snug across the back when wearing a mid layer.

Not for standing still or if you run cold easily

I bought this jacket expecting a warm everyday jacket for Canadian winters but I found myself cold standing still, walking or sitting from -10C to -30C when humidity finally drops. If you are slightly more active it will work just fine (walking fast, ice skating) Though, beware that it's too warm for active sports (hockey, snowboarding, skiing, snowshoeing...). An important fact, looking at Arc'teryx size chart I fall in-between small and medium (5'11" for 165lbs). The athletic fit led me to buy a medium, but this was a mistake since it's too big for me if I don't put a sweater. A small would have kept me warmer when standing still and it would still have enough space for under layering. I recommend going one size smaller if you fall between two sizes. Down distribution is mostly around your upper body. In the lower portion of the jacket, you will find very few to about no down as you go to the lower edge/limit of the jacket. As a result, your back feels cold when you are not active. The jacket doesn't have a waist adjustment cord. I'm a slim man and having a waist draw cord would have made a great difference. The hood is made to wear a helmet. Beware that it will be way too big for your head if you don't wear one. As a result, it's very loose (it flys off easily). Furthermore, when you adjust it so it doesn't fly off all the extra material gathers in the back and it looks very bad. Plus, when you make it tighter, it falls right before your eyes and this jacket doesn't have a feature to adjust that. Basically, when it's adjusted to your head (no helmet) you can't look forward since it blocks your view. In short, I am very disappointed by this jacket since it doesn't work for me as advertised; since I bought it to keep me warm and I find it way too cold when standing, walking or sitting (which is most of the time) , since it has certain design flaws like the missing waist draw cord or the useless chest pocket (too small), since the hood is way too big when not wearing an helmet; since the hood blocks your view when fitted to your head (the hood helps a lot to keep you warm so you want it on); since its ideal usage is limited to light sports (which most of the time doesn't required an helmet...); since it's way too warm for skiing (even at -30C) and since the size chart is miss leading and not specific to the Macai.
Q: Activity
A: I recommend it for light sports

Hi SteveMaly the pictures show a hip cord, a snow skirt but no waist draw cord. Such cord would thithen the jacket around your core. Mine was the first gen but still they didn't add one yet. I stand firm on my review. Reading it again makes me realise it's a bit confusing. I found the jacket cold all over the winter except when doing sports because obviously your body warms up when doing so. More intense is the sport hotter the jacket gets. Pure logic. To me this jacket is best suited for light activities. For intense activities the jacket doesn't breath enough. The rest of the time i got cold. Hope that clarifies my review. I had 3 Arcteryx jacket over the years, this one was a big disappointment for all the reasons mentioned.

Sold my Canada Goose for this jacket

I sold my Canada Goose jacket for the Macai, and I couldn't have made a better decision. Although the Canada Goose was warm, it was bulky and the model I had did not have adjustable cuffs. The macai jacket is sleek, giving you a more form fitting appearance and has adjustable wrist cuffs, which I like. I used to sit by the lake in the dead of winter, even throughout blizzards, smoking a cigar by the water with only a tshirt on under this jacket, and was quite warm. Great wind protection. It was worth the price.

Tell me about your experiences in finding it too warm... I ski in Ottawa and looking for a warm coat but something that works for a temperature range... I want to be comfortable and not sweating once the temps reach -20c and below. I find this hard to decide what decision to make... I'll often use different layering options most of the time which works well because I can shed a layer if I'm too warm... with this coat I don't have that flexibility.

Warm, comfortable ski coat

It took me three tries- until I found the right Macai. First one was mislabeled. I was sent a medium rather than large. I ordered an XL which was way too big. Second try at large was just right. I'm 6'3", 195. Coat was great on first ski trip. I heat up fast on long bump runs and cool down fast on long lift rides. It was easy to make many adjustments - with the exception of pit zippers. They are angled oddly and I needed fellow skier to help. The hood fit easily over my helmet. For what it's worth, I love the blue coat. The black one has an ugly brown color on inside.

Macai Jacket is well designed, incredibly warm.

This Jacket has been put through several trials..I've hiked with this jacket in -5 F -15 F(with windchill) and at first ,It doesn't give you the impression it will keep you entirely warm on the count that its very light..but looks are truly deceiving this time around. It was so warm ( wearing only a thin base layer)that I had to zip down the jackets-under arm zips and front zips from time to time. There are absolutely no cold spots...The down seems to be very well distributed- although very minimum..the frigid cold does not penetrate. If you are active in this Jacket, you will not feel the wraith of the elements I guarantee it ,but if your just idling ,standing still ( lets say) the cold will eventually creep upon you. This jacket designed was not meant for scientist stationed in Antarctica or pipeline oil workers in Alaska in mind.. Truth be told..But it will definitely keep you warm out doors with 200-gram-300 gram Fleece well below -20 F. One recommendation to the design team who has done amazing job with the engineering of this jacket..:Definitely increase the down fill weight to several more oz.

Almost perfect for skiing, but those Subaru colors have got to stop

Having tried, owned and loved a few Arc’teryx jackets solely for the purpose of skiing, I can say without doubt that the Macai is the best of the bunch. It has the best fit and best looking cut, it never gets in the way no matter what type of motion you have in mind. When zipped up all the way, the jacket will grab on and maybe pull your chin a bit. This has been the case with pretty much every jacket I’ve tried recently, so it’s here mostly for the record. I ended up returning mine because of the color. It seems silly but this is my main complaint with anything Arc’teryx does. Look at this year’s colors. Are they trying to sell you a Subaru? Crosstrek orange, Outback-worthy green and navy and yes black to save the day because the other colors are too exciting. I'll be looking elsewhere for the Macai in other colors, dreaming and hoping that they offered the Macai in Diablo Red (such a cool name and color are reserved for jackets with a relaxed fit, go figure!)

I'm an expert level skier who recently moved to Calgary during a night below -30 and needed something fast. This jacket stood out for its versatility and functionality. I'm not the biggest fan of layering, either. I am between a M & L due to my chest - just over 180lbs at 5'11 with an athletic build. This seems to be a rather common issue with the jacket. Tight on the chest and too too baggy on the waistline. That said, I got the large and I do love it. I wish I could tapper it a bit. Skiing: Beautiful and ergonomic. I forget I have the thing on. The outer chest pocket could be larger so that it has more functions. Might also put it on both sides of the jacket - looked like it did initially and that threw me off. When putting the hood over a helmet the jacket pulls up quite a bit and this creates pressure on my head when I wear my backpack in the back country. 24/7 work: The black keeps it looking professional in the banking industry and the red adds a touch of character - honestly, we do need to wear less black and trench coats. If you need to block wind and keep warm without the concern of the feathers getting wet then this is a beauty. A nice small package for its punch and I do not think another jacket rivals this yet. Canadian Goose does give some more warmth, but you lose ergonomics, tighter and classier fit, and it is vulnerable in wet conditions. Can: Warmth said, you could add some more stylish/hidden vents to help dump heat. Where Calgary is changing its mind on weather every day it is easy to be wearing this jacket when it jumps to a warmer temperature. Some fur on the hood - even synthetic- would be classy and help keep the face warm. I do travel this world quite a bit and will look forward to abusing it. Thank you for making Skiing and life in the Calgary cold comfortable.
First off i own quite a lot of Arcteryx jackets including hardshells and insulated Goretex jackets including the Fission SV and SL so i am going to tell what i experienced with them. Size. I am 174cm with a 97cm chest, 34” waist and medium built so i normally wear a Small or Medium depends on the cut. For the Macai i went for a Medium since the Small was a little too snug on me. It has a relatively trim fit so i strongly suggest anyone should try the jacket on before purchasing. For the Medium i can still fit in a mid layer such as an Atom LT or a Venta AR. Zippers/Pockets Watertight zippers for hand pockets and the chest pocket and Watertight Vislon zipper for the main zip. They zip like butter and as always, i am just in love with the Vislon main zipper since it can operated with a single hand, even with my gloves on. Meanwhile the chest pocket is super duper small. I am not sure why it was designed this way but i suspect due to the “strategic placement of down” quoted by Arcteryx a larger pocket will get in the way or something? Anyways you can still fill the chest pocket with a couple of credit cards or your car keys but thats it. Dont expect to fit your smartphone. The rest of the pockets are absolutely fine though. The Hood/Collar The collar is wide. It is a lot wider than the Fission SV which has the Drophood as well so my neck caught a fair amount of cold wind quite easily but a neck gaiter will solve the problem. Not a big issue for me. The insulated Drophood is huge, helmet compatible as always and it is WARM. It works like a dream. No vision-blocking issues whatsoever. Warmth. This is where the Macai shines. I run cold very easily so i tend to look for something really warm. I have the Fission SV, SL and the Kappa Hoody and NONE of them come close to the Macai in terms of warmth. I even own the Atom AR, the Thorium AR and the Ceriums working with the Alpha and Rush shells but i tell you what the Macai is the warmest piece in my closet hands down. Sure someone might love layering with hardshells for versatility but i am just trying to review the warmth of the Macai comparing with some other applications. Breathability is superb considering it is a down jacket with Goretex Pro 3L. It breathes so well that i seldom have to play with the meshed pit zips. The Fission SV is warm, but the Macai is much warmer. Verdict. At $849 the Macai is definitely a very expensive jacket. But it has a superior build quality, lots of features like a removable powder skirt, Recco reflector, together with bomber protection and warmth thanks to the 750 fill and 3L Goretex shell, this is definitely one of the best and warmest insulated jacket out in the market. However there might be some small issues that you might need to aware like a small chest pocket, the trim fit and the Drophood (Some might prefer a Stormhood), but at the end of the day Arcteryx has produced an epic jacket, period.
