My Happy Place is Outside

Finally a jacket that keeps me dry and is so comfortable that I don't mind wearing it. I have owned many other rain/shell jackets and not only did they not keep me dry but I just did not like wearing them so I would avoid it at all cost. I love my Beta AR jacket so much that I find myself wearing it as an outer layer even when it's not raining. I wear it with my Atom LT and it keeps me warm and comfortable in 40 degree weather. If it's around 30 degrees I would wear a warm base layer too. I did a short 3 mile hike in steady rain to test it out and I was completely dry. The water just shakes right off of it. The hood has many adjustments to make it fit just right. At first I did not like the stiff collar but now I appreciate how it keeps the wind out. I am 5'5 and 127lbs and the small fits just right. I had a hard time deciding on the color but I went with Labyrinth and I love it. I love the contrasting color on the zippers too. I can't wait to try it for snowshoeing.

Hiya, I think I'm in exactly the same measurements as you, I also want to wear my Atom LT under. My Atom LT is a size Small - so did you go up one size on the Beta AR or did you keep Beta AR in Small too? Much appreciated.

Still the best!

Back in the day, when I used to do all the fun things, I had a very well loved and used Beta AR. I needed to warranty it, but wasn't optimistic that it would be covered. However, to my wonderous surprise, ARCTERYX did warranty my jacket and sent me a new one -- super Fast!! And while I am no longer able to blaze through that chest deep pow or hike the whole of the Appalachian Trail, I can still chase my mini-me's in style and dry comfort!! Thank you ARCTERYX for making me even more grateful that I invested in your product, the Beta AR.

Very nice jacket

This is a very nice jacket - lightweight and fairly robust. It's well cut and nice looking. If you are long waisted you are going to wish it was just a teeny bit longer. The pockets are great when you are wearing a pack - and very awkward if you don't have a pack belt blocking the natural place to put your hands on a cold afternoon.

A very expensive disappointment

for 5 år siden

I have owned lots of Arc'teryx gear over the years and treated myself to a new Beta AR this year. I'm sorry to say that this jacket was a very expensive disappointment. There is one thing I expected it to do -- keep me dry -- but it absolutely failed from its very first use. Since I have had Arc'teryx rain gear in the past and just assume it works, I didn't hesitate to pack this jacket for a Kilimanjaro climb as soon as it arrived. Bad move. We had a few days of rain on the mountain and, though it wasn't extreme or torrential, I found my inner layers consistently got wet. The arms of this jacket soaked through especially quickly, and the only part of me that wasn't wet down to the base layer after a couple hours of hiking in steady rain was the area of my back covered by my pack -- starting from its very first wear!! I so, so wish I had tested this jacket in rain before relying on it as an essential piece of gear. Because I hadn't, I was wet and cold and uncomfortable for much of my climb. If you're going to just wear this jacket to and from the car on drizzly days, it might be fine. But if you're looking for actual rain gear that will keep you dry in the great outdoors, I'm sorry to say you'll have to look elsewhere.

First Waterproof Shell

This is my first waterproof shell and I really love it. I wanted something I could wear for all my outdoor activities - lots of walking with my dog, but also cycling and trying some alpine sports later this year. I heard amazing things about Arcteryx jackets and figured I’d go with the investment piece. You can tell it’s super high quality and there are lots of nice little features. Highly recommend, I would for sure repurchase.

Disappointed

Bought this jacket specifically to wear for Kilimanjaro climb. On the summit night, it was sleeting with temperatures definitely in below freezing point. Maybe because it was so cold the jacket's waterproofing didnt hold as advertised. The synthetic jacket I was wearing underneath the Beta got wet. Luckily I had on a fleece layer under to keep me warm.

Best All Round jacket

Awesome jacket for all year round use. It fits a bit bigger than the other Beta SL or LT, allowing more room for layers, and my chest. Face fabric is skookum, love everything about this jacket.

Jacket under performed after only 3 wears

The 3rd outing with my jacket resulted in it getting ‘wetted out’ I.e. the gortex got so wet by the rain it affected its performance and ability to breathe which in turn made me pretty uncomfortable and susceptible to cold from the moisture inside.The recommendation is that a DWR coating should be reapplied but I find it hard believe that this should be necessary so soon. I would not recommend this jacket especially if you are working hard in the mountains and really need both a very breathable and waterproof shell.

Wanted to love it, but...

I had the zeta lt jacket for ~2 years and the waterproofing started to go, so I decided to upgrade to the beta ar in hopes of getting a more rugged jacket for field work use. After having it for less than four months and using it for work in the mountains, I am finding that my mid layers get wet if it rains for longer than a few minutes (especially on the arms). I've washed it pretty consistently with gear wash and applied DWR two-three times and it only beads for the first few uses and after that it soaks through quickly. I also don't like that it takes them many weeks to assess the items when you have a problem, I need to use this jacket for my work this summer so sending it off for up to 6 weeks is too long!

What have you done to the design..

Having purchased a Beta AR 15 years ago which I have worn and loved, I only wanted a new one when it finally fell apart. However, having worn it yesterday for the first time I am totally disapointed. The sleeves are too baggy and got caught in my rucksack. The pockets are too low to put anything in whilst wearing a rucksack with a waist strap-so you have to unbuckle. The pulls on the zip are almost impossible to open when wearing thick gloves with numb fingers inside. I can’t believe all the good features on my 15 year old model have been lost. The only good feature is the fabric which kept me totally warm with a wind chill well below freezing. I am totally regretting my choice of staying with Arcteryx.

Warm jacket but expensive

I really like this jacket - this is the first I've own. I've always went with North Face but wanted to try this jacket on. The jacket is warm, waterproof from rain and has Goretex materials. The only issue with this jacket is how expensive it is (almost 25% more expensive than regular Goretex jackets) and the limited warranty (North Face offers warranty for a longer period of time in case of unusual rips and tears due to the manufacturing)

Tried this on in a store. The fit and colour (pomegranate) were great. I love that the hood is separate from the hood so I can zip up around my neck when it is not raining. I did find the length a bit short for me (5'9"). Overall, a lovely jacket.

Jacket fits so well and guards against heavy rain. It’s a life saver if you are outside for long periods of time in the rain. It covers our waist and bottom very well. It’s the perfect length. Also incredibly lightweight for travelling.

My favourite shell

This jacket is fantastic, I use this as my main waterproof layer and I love it. It is a bit of a heavier material but this is made up for by the fact that it is very durable and strong. I wear it hiking/snowshoeing in the mountains and during field work and never worry about it getting snagged or ripped up at all. The pit zips are great and allow you to vent heat when working hard. It's a good length and the fit is perfect - I layer it with a down jacket in colder weather and it works fantastic. The hand pockets are a great size and there is an interior pocket (would love it if it were large enough for a phone). I love how adjustable everything is (sides and top of hood, wrist cuffs, hem, pit vents) - it makes it very versatile for a variety of conditions. It is pricey but it is an awesome piece of gear and my favourite waterproof shell I've ever had.

Great outer layer

This jacket is my favorite outer layer when the weather is wet, snowy or windy. It comfortably fits over a warmer down jacket on cold days or is perfect on its own when the temperatures are warmer. Love the venting zips and the cut of this jacket. Love the blue color I got!

Don't like the new fit

This is an excellent all round jacket. Great quality, nice finishing, clean lines. Arcteryx is on point. But the fit of the Beta AR has really gone to the dogs. I bought my beloved Beta AR in 2015 and I had a warranty issue that had my jacket replaced 8 months ago. I am so sad with the new fit. I'm not overly curvy but I do have girl shape (I am 5'8"/145lbs/34D-29-40 and wear a medium which allows room for layering) and I feel like I'm wearing a mens jacket. I never feel excited to put the new one on. Very disappointed that this is what I have now.

Very versatile jacket

Love my AR, it is very versatile and follows me on hikes, climbs and walks to work. Planning to use it this winter for cross country skiing too. I am wondering what might be the right synthetic insulating layer to pair it with? Any suggestions ? Thanks guys!! Jude

Definitely not waterproof!!!

I bought this jacket. The most expensive item. Went to Hawaii to backpack and knew there was a chance for rain. Even with the hood on I was wet underneath combined with material did not make for a great hike. Disappointed as this was the first time I used it and for what I paid I expected to be dry. The insid was moist and ended up taking it off for rest of trip since he wasn’t providing protection anyway.

Hi Andi, This is Gabby from Customer Service, thanks for your feedback. Gore-Tex is more effective when the temperature on the outside is colder than the inside of the jacket or condensation can occur. In the hot, humid tropics, however, the sweat has nowhere to go. It’s just as hot and humid outside as it is around your body. So the sweat just sits there, it is possible that this is what was happening during your travel in Hawaii. When hiking in warm conditions, it is sometimes best to have a water resistant garment with quick trying proprieties. I would suggest trying your jacket in a colder environment to see how it perform. I'm originally from Alaska and Gore-tex is great for hiking in the rain up there (as long as it isn't a torrential lower 48 style downpour), but I now live in Hawaii and I will tell you, nothing keeps you dry in tropical rain. If you aren't on Maui or BI at elevation, it is best to just skip a jacket all together or use a rain pancho if you must have something. On the plus side though, unlike Alaska, things dry very quickly in Hawaii.
