Just recieved the shoes, they feel good straight out of the box, no need to break them in. Size is on spot, got size UK8, same as I have the Arakys. The shoe itself feels quality made, for now it is a 5 star product for me.

Great for a couple months.

Bought these around 8 months ago, I'm a postman in scotland so I have covered hundreds of miles in these trainers. First 2 months, great no problems at all very comfortable and weatherproof. 3rd month of wearing started to notice wear on the inside of both trainers where the toes crease. And gradually over the next few months they got worse and worse. They are no longer weatherproof.

Awesome Versatility

Super light, snug fitting shoe for a variety of terrains. From Eastern Sierra and Rocky Mountain use, to use in the BC Mountains and Canadian Rockies in Banff, they break in super easily and give the protection needed in sticky situations with gravel and climbing over rocks and going through snow and ice. Favorite shoes the brand makes at the moment!

Great looking and comfortable shoe

The shoes are very comfortable, but loud. Between the noisy bottoms and the shoe itself, they make a lot of noise walking. I use them for travelling to destinations that put me in wet, dry, and off the beaten path, and they work well for this. But everyone hears me coming. Seems like the bottoms need to be softer? They do run a little narrow.

Great shoe!

It's a great shoe, light, snug fit (sock fit) and ideal for treking. The downside, which is a personal preference for me, is having to use two hands to pull on the shoe. Where as before, I've used one or no hands.

They do well at what they're designed to do.

One of the most comfortable hiking / climbing / scrambling approach shoes I've ever worn. Waterproof. Dust and gravel proof with the sock like gaiter. Sticky rubber. It is a snug fit, however. If you've never worn snug / tight rock climbing shoes or you're not used to that snug fit, then these aren't the shoes for you. These shoes are supposed to be a bit tighter for maximum feel underfoot when scrambling, and they do that great.

Chaussures de qualité, de belle apparence et confortable. Elles ont le défaut d'une de ses qualités: comme elles sont très ajustées, il est difficile d'insérer le pied dans la chaussure.

Coolest and lightest approach/trail hybrid shoe

Love the design, sock like fit and how light these are! A unique shoe for sure. Although they have some conns; After about 10km they started cutting in right below my ankle making it painful to walk, I resolved that with rising my heel by inserting a thicker insole. Another one is the stickiness, someone mentioned they are sticky but for me I thought these are probably the most slippery shoes I've had on in a while. Perhaps the rubber needs some breaking in.

non-slip and looking good!

These are my favorite arc’teryx shoes so far a though i wish the tongue wasn’t so tight but maybe it will loosen up with wear. I’m on my second pair of the off-white ones and fresh outta the box walked 16000 steps each day for 4 days around Washington DC. We had lots of rain and covered a lot of ground but my feet stayed dry and supported the whole trip! The tread makes noise indoors but it’s worth it for the Vibram grip because i never slipped on wet marble steps at any monument or museum. The shoes continue to look great and am sure i will enjoy them for a long time!

Incredibly slippery on ice

Shoes are nice and fairly comfortable but the grip is the worst of four shoes I’ve tried on curling ice. Curling ice is pebbly and I’ve tried two other Arc’teryx shoes and a Reebok shoe that all stick to the ice well but these grips are as slippery as skates. They are unuseable on that ice. In the photo the worn out Reebok grip is much stickier on ice then the new vertex grips.

Hello there, thank you for sharing your feedback on the Vertex Alpine GTX Shoes. We’re sorry to hear they didn’t meet your expectations on curling ice. The Vertex Alpine GTX shoes are designed as approach shoes, optimized for stability and grip on wet and dry technical terrain, and are not specifically intended for traction on curling ice. We rely heavily on user feedback, and we appreciate your honest review.

Poor build quality

This is my second pair of Arcteryx footwear, my first pair were the Aerios 2 FL. This pairs upper split where a crease developed just behind the toe. A replacement could not be supplied so I was refunded and I purchased this model. Unfortunately after just a couple of months infrequent use, the rear pull tab (which is essential to pull this design on, due to the internal sockets style design) just pulled away from the upper breaking it's stitching. I've always been a bit fan of the brand, owning numerous items of clothing and back packs but I think I need to search for an alternative footwear brand.

Further to this issue I was offered alternative replacement goods as opposed to shoes as I had lost confidence in the footwear. I selected 2 merino tops ( equaling the same value of the shoes) as I have always been a happy customer with regards to Arcteryx clothing. This was great I thought. However, I only received one top. When I reported this, I was told I had to wait for a 3 week investigation with the courier. So, not only have I had two pairs of faulty shoes in just a few month's, no I have to wait in order that Arcteryx can ensure the recovery of it's costs before the end customer who has already paid can receive the goods that have already been paid for. This is poor customer service. It is the retailers responsibility to supply the goods that have been ordered.

Excellent quality GTX trainer

Have been wearing Arc'teryx gtx trainers for the last 2-3 years. They are exceptionally well made and durable, I wear them just every day and over rugged terrain when out with dogs. They are the best I have come across. I have recently purchased my 2nd pair. This time the Vertex Alpine GTX M and they are superb. Same excellent build quality and ruggedness but this time with the added "sock effect" around your ankles(not sure the exact name but a great addition) hopefully these will last as long as my last pair.highly recommend these trainers or any GTX trail teainer from Arc'teryx.

Great shoe but heel pain due to sock like fit

I wanted to love these shoes…I took them to the Italian Dolomites. For 3 days they were stellar. Grippy on rock, comfortable for long long days hiking/scrambling/running & with some wet snowy conditions…Then they started to tug at my right heel in a way no other shoe has done before. I could no longer wear them- the pain was so limiting. I am hoping to wear them again after the swelling and pain in my heel has gone down, but I am not sure if they will be in the rotation hereafter. This is not due to blisters or blistering pain, but pain at the insertion of my Achilles into my right heel. There is a chance this is due to overuse, however I am accustomed to high mileage and have never experienced this kind of lock into my heel swelling and pain before (used la Sportiva tx guide, Solomon, hoka, altra prior) . I feel the sock like fit is a potential strength but in my case a detriment. I will try them again once my pain leaves

Amazing Hiking and Scrambling Shoe

I don't write many product reviews but after a lengthy wear-in period this shoe is an exceptional hiking / scrambling shoe. I was married to my La Sportiva TX3's until they were discontinued and I was forced to look into other options. Despite the cost I decided to try these. At first they were disappointing - very tight and somewhat uncomfortable under my ankles. Admittedly my feet are a bit strange so I gave it more time to wear in and it worked! I just completed a 5 day, 147 km trip with almost 7,000 meters of height gain hiking and scrambling peaks and rough scree on and off trail in the Alberta Rockies. I've also done many day trips in them while breaking them in and the grip on slab is amazing and very confidence inspiring. A major weakness of many alpine scrambling shoes is the outer material breaking and wearing on the copious amounts of sharp scree that we subject them to. These shoes still look brand new somehow. I'm not 100% sure but I wonder if the Gore-Tex layer makes them stronger? Personally I don't need the Gore as I wade through streams all the time and obviously the Gore-Tex just helps keep the water in rather than out in these cases but I'm going to buy another pair of these for the additional layer. In conclusion - a MAJOR win for Arc'teryx. THANK YOU for making this shoe!

Really satisfied of those shoes!

I got those shoes about a month ago and I'm very satisfied so far. I used them mainly for hiking and as long approach shoes. I have been using them pretty extensively in different conditions and I have to say that they have been performing very well. They feel very comfortable and offer a lot of grip and the gore-tex liner product offers decent protection. The shoes feel narrow, so might not be too suitable for wider foot. They felt very stiff at first and It took me about a week to fully break them in. The knit collar does keep debris out and offer comfortability around the ankles. If you are looking for a pair of technical shoes built for hard scrambles, hiking and long approach, I'd highly recommend those.

perfect approach shoes for technical rock.

best approach shoes i have worn. seems like all the negative reviews on the vertex apline are from people who bought these for every purpose other than what the shoe was intended. these are not hiking shoes nor are they for casual wear, however if you want to walk around in them and flex the bird then more power to you. these are not running shoes, i couldn't even imagine running in these stiff soles. but if you run and they work for you, that's great. if you have a long approach and require hiking, i'd suggest a softer approach shoe built for all-around use. arcteryx gear is technical and specific to certain jobs, which can be overwhelming. big benefits include the lace pocket which keeps the laced tucked so they don't get stepped on or tangled in scrub. gore-tex keeps me dry when i'm trudging through snow. the sock liner keeps all the pea gravel and dirt out of the shoes and comfortably wraps around the ankle for support. vibram sole sticks to rock and keeps me stable. durable material doesn't fall apart when scraping through talus. super comfortable when navigating a gigantic scree field and gigantic talus all morning and back down after climbing. on flat trails, this shoe will feel strange on your feet. as soon as you leave the trail and need to scramble to your destination, it excels.

Favorite for Hiking/Scrambling

Great shoe for hiking and scrambling. I really like that they have a stiff sole, it makes it nice for rougher terrain compared to a trail running shoe. I have a narrow foot and they fit nicely. I’ve submerged them in water on creek crossings and the waterproofing works well, my feet stayed dry.

I am a huge fan of your brand - I own 4 pairs at this point. This shoe is fine but my favorite is still the Aerios and there NONE in my size (9.5). Is that something that may change in the future?

Sent back .l really wanted to like these shoes, but they were not comfortable and with the snug ankle portion made them to way hard to put on. Oh well, otherwise great looking shoe .. just wasn’t for me

Stellar Approach Shoe

I've been super excited for Arc'teryx to put out a competitive approach shoe and they nailed it with the Vertex. Out of the box, they feel super narrow in the midsole area, so much so that I didn't think I would be able to wear them. Fortunately, after just a couple hours in them, they broke in nicely. If you have wider feet, be patient with them as they'll feel way tight. Once broken in though, the shoe feels great. Superior comfort, modern lacing system, and functional performance make this a top tier approach shoe. The rubber feels pretty sticky and the shoes hold a decent edge as well. This shoe feels way less clunky than other approach shoes on the market and is definitely geared more towards long days scrambling in the mountains and moving fast. They are light weight yet very supportive and feel like they will hold up for a long time. The vertex is a great addition to your kit if you are pursuing modern, fast and light climbing days in the mountains.

My feet really hurt

I had been excited about these shoes partially because every product I’ve ever purchased by Arc’teryx has been of the utmost quality and very comfortable to wear. That said, unless there is an unusually long and arduous breaking in period I was not aware of, these quite possibly are the least comfortable shoes I’ve ever worn. The soles are fine and quite adequate but I’ve never experienced such discomfort from a shoe on the top of my feet. It’s as if put my feet in some sort of Iron Maiden torture device and went for a long walk in them.

A running shoe simply needs a decent insole.

A heavy and stiff shoe, cold lined and rubs on the ankles. Unfortunately, as always with Arcteryx, not a remotely usable insole. Ortholite was once standard here. A running shoe simply needs a decent insole.

A: Trailrunning

No, I do not recommend this product.

Vertex Alpine GTX Shoe Men's

The Vertex Alpine GTX is a complete rethinking of the approach shoe. Balancing the fit and performance of a trail running shoe with the stability required for long days on technical terrain, it’s light, fast, waterproof and combines support and protection with a secure, comfortable ride. A full GORE-TEX liner seals out wet and snow, and the sticky Vibram XS Flash 2 outsole is designed for edging, on-trail performance, and grip in wet and dry conditions. A TPU shank and toe cap add protection, and a knit collar seals out debris.

What's been updated: Updated with a PFCec-Free DWR (Durable Water Repellent) treatment.
