First - my compliments. The Beta Ar is largely a superb feat of clothing engineering. Amazingly designed and accounts for the technical uses it is specified for. The material is remarkable, albeit a little stiff, by being both wind resistant and breathable. This jacket is my go-to in most outdoor activities, as a shell in winter and on its own in rain during other seasons. My circa 2004(?) version still looks new. My picadillos mostly have to do with being short. Trying to layer for skiing/winter means that i’ve inches of fabric at the wrist, that bunch under gloves. This on an arm that already has less length to accommodate any bulk. Paying top dollar for a piece of technical gear had always been a heartache for this 5’ body. While the extra length is to allow for overhead movement, it is more than enough for the shorter statures. The second pain point - quite literally, is from the chin guard when the jacket is zipped up. The stiff fabric rubs my chin raw. Customer service explained that the hood was designed to be used with a helmet. ...ergo shouldn’t rub when the hood is over a helmet? not true. For this shorter gal, wearing a ski helmet means the chin piece is hiked up so high it’s almost over my nose. Which also gets chafed raw from the stiff tab at the top of the neck piece. Hence the four, not five star rating. I enjoy the jacket when I don’t need it in the most dire, technical situations, but find it misses the mark a little for my size when I really need the details it was built for. Sometimes that’s almost more disappointing - It’s within reach, but just out of my grasp.

New fit is awkward and too straight

I had my original Beta AR for six years, and loved how it was lightweight, bomb-proof, and perfect for hiking, climbing, and skiing throughout the four seasons - but most importantly (and unlike most other high-end athletic gear) it had a feminine shape that matched my curved shape! When the seam delaminated 2 years ago I foolishly sent it back, and while Arc'teryx was nice enough to send a replacement, the new fit is terrible for shorter, curvy women. As many others have mentioned, the straight cut is tight in the chest and hips but too baggy in the shoulders and arms, and the revised front packets are very awkward and difficult to close with gloved hands. I wish I could continue to recommend the Beta AR, but until Arc'teryx decides to return to its distinctive, well-fitting jacket, I'm still looking for a replacement...

Fit is Awful

I can’t say enough about how disappointed I am with the fit of this shell. I am a petite size 8 with a larger bust and none of the sizes on offer come close to fitting me. You really need to make just one petite fitting jacket option for those of us who aren’t your tall, thin body type. The medium had not enough room for layering, yet was still much too long in the arms and much too loose in the shoulders with lots of bulk in the arms. The large felt like I was a child trying on my mother’s clothing: I had a good five inches of fabric hanging past my fingertips on the sleeves and the body came down to my crotch impeding my range of movement when walking. I could fit both of my arms in one sleeve. It was rediculous. I want to throw my money at you for an amazing shell, but you really need to move towards inclusive fit models. Not impressed.

Used to love this jacket but the new fit is awful

My boyfriend bought me the Beta AR 5 years ago and it has been wonderful - great for any outdoor activity and I had many adventures in it. It packs great, washes great and fit great. However, after 5 years, I went to get my jacket replaced and although customer service was amazing at the store, I was ultimately dissatisfied. I have a few Arc'teryx pieces and I love how well-crafted they are but the new Beta AR is surprisingly dissapointing. The fit is no longer true to size and I understand that they may have meant for more versatility and layering - however, the sleeves, especially near the shoulder and armpit are incredibly unproportional. Even if you size down to compensate for the overall size increase, the waist is too small and the sleeves are still too wide. As it is an all-around piece, I would not expect someone to layer multiple layers underneath it so there is no need for the extra room. If I needed the layering space I would have purchased a more durable, winter-weight shell such as the SV or just the size up. In addition, the front pocket zips have changed and are awkward. I believe it is the only style that zips the opposite way to close (downwards). It may save on weight but I'm not sure why they only changed this particular style. For the original fit and model, I would have definitely given this jacket 5 stars, however, I think that though the craftsmanship and durability is still amazing on this product, it was the fit that separated it from other options on the market. This new fit unfortunately makes the jacket less functional.

Hello, I am pretty petite and was super excited to see this offered in XXS as the XS is still fairly roomy on me if I only use it as a shell without any midlayers. However, I can't find the XXS anywhere even though it is listed as an option. It is always grayed out? :( Please start making more in XXS

Thank you for providing your feedback. I’m not sure why XXS is listed, as we do not make this jacket in that size unfortunately. I apologize for the miscommunication. I will let the web team know so they can edit the website accordingly. I will also pass on your feedback to the designer of our Essentials collection.

Great overall shell

For years I'd been buying lesser, cheaper shells with minimal features only to have to replace them. I finally bought an Arcteryx Beta AR and am so glad that I did. It has all the features I want in a hard shell. The hood fits well because of the 3 methods of adjustment. The armpit zippers are great for ventilation. I have enough room for a fleece or down jacket underneath for extra warmth. The pockets are big enough and their location keeps stuff from interfering with backpack waist straps. Also, I like the inner collar that protects my neck even with the hood down. Finally, I'm happy to have an Arcteryx product because I know from past experience that they have excellent customer service.

Sturdy Shell

After sending in my Beta SL for warranty repairs 2 months after I got it, they suggested I get a more durable jacket so I upgraded to the Beta AR. I have no regrets! I have used it by itself and with a down sweater and it protects me from the wind and rain. I am looking forward to testing it out further!

Best jacket I ever had!

I had this shell for 8 years and unfortunately it got stolen last week as I was ending a hiking trip in Oregon (yep). I travelled everywhere with it, from the Andes to the Arctic circle! Pouring rain, snow, wind, mud, from -30C to 30C, bring it! I really enjoyed the hood, armpit zippers and the overall quality and design. I can tell you that it is probably the most versatile jacket ever created. I'm 5'3 and 120 lbs, wearing size Small and have enough space for a layer underneath if I'm cold. In the winter, I usually (used to) wear it with the Cerium LT down jacket and the Atom hoody jacket or the Covert fleece in the Fall. Also, Arc'teryx offers a lifetime warranty, which is amazing in you plan on keeping that jacket for a while.

Great gear!

This Beta AR jacket is great! It stands up to abuse, is super light and packable, is a great colour for areas where visually standing out can mean life or death (search and rescue, heli operations) and overall looks amazing! I get a whack load of compliments on it. I wear this jacket out mountain biking and hiking with a large heavy pack on. It is not bulky and I have seen no wear at friction points (shoulders) it gets pelted with dirt all the time when I am working with the helicopters, and it stays fairly clean. Its also easy to pack away once its warm out and no longer required. I find the greatest pro to be the colour, it really stands out when you want it too out in the backcountry, heaven forbid you have to be located by SAR or from the air. Wish I could afford to buy all the colours!!!

Great jacket for layering. I got it for my hike up Kilimanjaro last October, and have used it a ton since. Very durable, and versatile. I'm happy with how many layers I can fit underneath, and how it also fits just on it's own. Just wish the pockets were a little more user friendly :)

Love this jacket

Love this jacket! True to it's name, its an all-round great piece. From hiking to snowboarding to general day use this jacket is perfect for them all. Nice length, great hood, and of course super waterproof! I bought an xl so its roomy enough for layers but it's not too baggy to be worn on its own. Best of all, doesn't feel like a sticky garbage bag when you get your sweat on : )

Good at first

I bought my hard shell beta AR in 2011. With high price comes high exceptions. At first, I really liked my jacket and I used it when I was travelling, trekking/hiking and crosscountry skiing. Now, all the layer inside are tearing appart, it is no longer waterproof or windproof and I also had an issue with one of my zipper. Now when it rains the water goes inside my pocket. I heard the warranty is very good, but for now I can say that I am very disappointed with the product. I have a winter and a windproof jacket (to name only a few) and those are just wonderful product for now. This is why I rated 3 stars because of my other products. I send an e mail at the customers service, I hope I will hear back very soon. Tanya P.

This is true love

I don't think I've ever been happier with a piece of outdoor clothing. I've owned this jacket for 3 years now, and its honestly as good as the day I got it. Does it carry a hefty price tag? Yes. But is it worth every penny? Absolutely. It's lightweight, robust, and most importantly, it keeps me bone dry in all weathers! I mostly use it for hiking/backpacking around Britain and Arctic Sweden, but have also taken it downhill/cross country skiing a couple of times, and have found it to cope with all situations thrown at it. It weighs barely anything and screws up tiny, yet I have never for one minute questioned its durability. The material feels bombproof, and the construction is incredibly solid. There's no seams or stitching that feels like they may become a weak point. The design is very well thought out. It is a relatively parred back design, yet it doesn't feel like anything is missing. The pockets are well placed, the pit zips easy to use on the move (I've had some previously on a different jacket that were very awkward to zip and unzip while wearing it and walking). The hood is also easy to adjust and fit. If this is alls sounds rather gushing, then its because it is! I really couldn't be happier! In terms of fit, I'm slim (UK 8/10) but tall (5'8"). I'm also a curvier, rather than straight build. The jacket has quite a fitted cut, and is long in the body and the sleeves. I chose a size medium, which for me is near on perfect. I don't worry about the body rising up and leaving my hips exposed to getting damp (which can be an issue in jackets cut shorter!) and the sleeves cover half my hands - meaning no soggy sleeves! Although I could have gotten away with the small, I prefer the roominess of the medium for sticking layers underneath. If I was just hiking in just base layer and fleece wouldn't be an issue, but I do need to layer up the jumpers on occasion, and find the medium less restrictive in that situation - especially under the arm pits. I suppose the one issue that could be found, is if you do prefer a boxier fit, this probably wouldn't be the right jacket. It is fitted, especially round the waist and sleeves. Otherwise however, if you're looking for a lightweight but bombproof waterproof, I honestly can say I'd never use anything else.

Highly durable & waterproof!

All-weather gem. Used it in heavy spindrift, snowfall, waterfall, you name it. Scratched against rock and one year into it, so far the material is still like new. Useful features include inside chest pocket, hem drawcord, helmet compatible hood, and many more. One of the best shells out there. Highly recommended.

excellent jacket

This jacket is very well thought out and an excellent all round shell. Lots of room in the hood for a helmet but great features to tighten it up so it doesn't flop over your face if you're not wearing one. The collar is nice and high and keeps out the wind and elements and helps keep heat in. Love the longer sleeves. I have a long torso and would like another inch in length but thats not a deal breaker. The pocket zippers open up instead of down which is hard to get used to and a little awkward. I can understand why they might be like that I just can't get over it feeling awkward. The jacket is cut pretty straight and doesn't quite fit right for an hourglass figure. Its pretty bulky in the mid section for me and fits perfect in the chest and hips. If you're a straight or athletic build it would be perfect. I find the extra loose fabric in the middle gets in the way of easy movement. Other than the overall cut and the backwards zipper I would put this jacket as pretty much perfect.

Versatile, all around Jacket

I've had this jacket for two years now and I have come to love it. I've used it for rock climbing, backpacking, and skiing. I've worn it all sorts of weather and conditions. From the muddy wet Juan de Fuca trail to a snowy Whistler summit this jacket really is made for everything. I've worn this jacket in pouring rain that's blowing sideways and it's kept me dry. It's seen a fair a bit of abuse (including a mud bath) and still looks like new and has maintained it's waterproof ability. I bought this jacket just a little loose for my body and I've found this to be the perfect fit. This way I can layer all my warm winter layers underneath it when I need too. I especially like the armpit zippers, these are perfect for letting heat and moisture out when you are burning energy. I also really like the adjustable hood, it's easy to cinch up just right so it's not in your line of sight. The hood also fits nicely over helmets. I recommend this to anyone looking for an all mountain jacket, you can use it for just about any activity.

Withstands the test of time

I've had this jacket for about 8 years now and it's still going strong. I took it to college in Boston where it withstood blizzards and being on the water 6 days a week (I was a coxswain back in the day). Now that I'm back home in Seattle I can say this jacket is still performing every time I wear it whether it's around the city or skiing in Whistler. I recommend this jacket above all others. The price is worth it considering it will likely last me 10 years maybe beyond!

Perfect all-around jacket

I purchased my Beta AR in 2010 and have used it through rainy and ski seasons since. This jacket has lived through Louisiana wet summers and Colorado winters, acting as my lone ski jacket during that time. Although I have not done anything to maintain waterproofness during that time, this jacket has never failed to keep me dry in even the worst conditions. The fabric is durable, even through hard falls it has never shown wear. It looks brand new today!

still going strong so many years later

bought my mother one about 6 years ago and it is still going strong, no delamination, no discoloration, and no glue breaking down. The zipper coating and are still doing a great job sealing out rain, which is one thing that has in the past been for me the first to go on my older beta ar. She loves the jacket and wears it everyday in the fall and winter in the rain when she is walking the dog. She does not do any mountaineering so this jacket is kind of overkill for her. These jackets are pretty bombproof with the proper care and DWR treatment.

Great fit!

Hi! I LOVE this jacket. It is very durable and great for every activity. What makes it the best for me (I've bought FOUR of these jackets in the past - two for myself as well as some for family/friends!) is the fit. As a rock/alpine climber its very hard to find a company that builds clothes that fit a climbing women's body (developed shoulders and back and narrow waist). t is flattering and accommodates movement very well. I fact Arcteryx is the only company that makes jackets that fit an athletic women's build this well! I was surprised to see the first reviewer did not like the fit. I find the fit is the best and there is nothing like it! Please don't change!! This jacket is the best!

Super durable, don't dig the fit

As far as waterproofing and windproofing, this jacket is killer. With its super durable construction, it shows virtually no signs of use after being worn 60+ times. My complaints concern fit. It's definitely relaxed, which works well to accommodate layers, but isn't very flattering. I'm 5'7," 125 pounds, small chested and the small has just been... Awkward. It appears to puff out in the chest; for my body, there's just too much room in the circumference. (But--I'd be concerned that going down a size would become too tight in the armpits if I were trying to layer, and too short on my waist.) As such, I never wear it "out and about." I don't use it as a rain jacket (which I was hoping to); again, it's just too baggy (and a bit bulky). It's listed as "hip length," which turns out to be too short for me and what I've ended up using it for (re: snowboarding, skinning, and cross country skiing). But that's not Arc'teryx's fault--it's intended for and listed as "all-around" use; I should have considered something ski/snow specific, like the Sentinel or Scimitar. Finally, I'm not a fan of the drop hood. If I'm layering with the Atom AR (or any other mid-layer with a hood) but have both hoods down, the collar of the Beta AR sort of forces the hood of the mid-layer to puff up and crowd the back of my head. Looks and feels awkward. As such, if I were to get another Arc'teryx shell, I'd get one with a Storm hood for sure. In short--not a bad jacket, just not a good one for me.

Love the fit

I have bought the Sentinel, Zeta AR, Tempest and Beta AR from online retailer. I've returned all kept the Beta AR. Sadly no one locally carries these styles for me to try on. The Sentinel and Tempest do not have as much wiggle room at the armpit and hip. The Zeta that I tried on didn't have pit zips if memory serves. The Beta AR feels more relaxed. I can wear a fleece layer under and the armpits do not feel tight. I can move my arms to the front of my chest without feeling restricted. I used velcro to adjust the arm length because it is slightly long. My hip is around 39" and there is some room left if I choose to cinch the toggle tight (but I don't use it). The hood has multiple adjustments (around the face, at the nape of the neck to adjust the height of the hood, and the middle of the head to cinch the two sides) that you can tailor to your head size. I wore this in pouring rain in Atlanta for hours while sightseeing and it kept me dry. The pit zips come in really handy. Love, love this jacket. I have Pink Guava (Winter 2015) and Malachite (2013) which is a beautiful green. I also like Genziana Blue and Vultee Blue from past seasons. I am normally size 6-8 and bought medium.

Great shell

This is a great shell and I love the vibrant colours it comes in. I personally found this shell quite short in the body. If I raise my arms, it will show my torso, and only just covers my bum. I went to size up but it was just too large. I think if Arc'teryx added a bit more length to the jacket, this would be the ultimate shell for women. The only other thing I found is that there seems to be a lot of room around the top of the sleeve that is really baggy on me even when I've layered. A little more trim there would be ideal but then again, that's just me! All-in-all a great shell, I love mine, I just wish it was a little bit longer.
