Great Jacket- One Annoying Flaw

Bought about a month ago and have used for running, biking, and wearing around town. Overall, it's an amazing jacket. The jacket is FAR warmer than you'd expect for something this lightweight, and it's a truly comfortable piece. For packability I really do wish it stowed into it's own pocket- that'd make it really amazing for traveling/ backpacking/ bikepacking etc. My one major gripe- the front/ main zipper doesn't lock. Doesn't seem like a big deal until you throw a pack on. 2 minutes later you've got a cold breeze coming through 'cause the zipper has migrated down to your belly. It's really, really annoying to have to keep zipping up the jacket over and over again because the weight of a pack pulls the jacket back, resulting in the zipper pulling down. Major oversight on an otherwise awesome jacket. Arc'teryx, please fix this!

High quality, great all rounder

Bought at the start of UK winter (Nov); been using a lot for exercise (running / hiking / bike) and just around town - great all rounder, warm but breathable, the cut / trim is perfect, and multi pockets suit well for keys/phone/snacks. I run quite warm but it breathes really well. Small main zip has been fine, only issue when had a hooded fleece under it widened the neck and pushed the zip open a little but its been fine otherwise. Black colour is smart too.

The Proton FL caught me by surprise, I think it is an absolute sleeper in Arc's lineup. I've got to admit when I first saw it, read about it and even tried it on in person I wasn't really blown away or sold on it. But after using it, it has quickly risen to the top of the heap and is one of my favorite Arc pieces. It breathes incredibly well, I like the two front chest pockets which also block some wind and add slight warmth. This is a Goldilocks piece. Throw a windbreaker or shell over the top and it becomes substantially warmer. Great piece for thermoregulation. I am in the Bay Area and spend time around California so the weather is very temperate - keep that in mind. I am not in Manitoba. For the weather I experience most often this piece works wonderfully. The un-isulated hood had me questioning the design team at first, but after using it, its a favorite feature of mine. It's perfect to put over a beanie or balaclava and adds tons of warmth by just cutting the wind down it moves with you never restricting head movement or impairing vision and when its down it disappears, no bulk - perfect. Anyone complaining about this feature didn't buy the right jacket for the job. The Proton FL is for on the move activities not for standing around and if you use it for what it was intended for it shines. The cut is very slim/athletic. Nice and close fitting through the arms and torso, but still allows for a light layer underneath like a Delta, but not much more. My only gripe is the length of the front hem, it is very short, I love the longer drop tail in the back, but I wish the front hem was 0.5 - 1" longer in the front, I don't understand the benefit to having it so short in the front. Armpits fit very well, they don't climb up and dig ( I had to return the Proton LT because the armpits were digging into me) The best sign of a good piece is you forget you have it on and the proton FL does that. Fit/Sizing 6' 165lbs 40" chest Atheltic longer toros Medium fits perfect, just need a slightly longer hem like the Proton LT has. Nice work with this one Arc!

Excellent jacket, wished it stuffed into its own pocket

Great jacket overall. I would give it 4.5 stars if that were an option. It is warmer than you would expect for the weight. It's quite breathable and makes an excellent 'active insulation' piece in cool to cold temperatures. The shell fabric is soft, stretchy, and durable for the weight. It has a nice selection of pockets, 2 hand pockets and 2 low profile chest pockets. Fit is spot on for me. I'm 5'10" 175-180 lbs, 42 inch chest, muscular build, and the large fits me great. Nice slim, athletic fit. It is a great piece for alpine rock climbing. It is breathable enough to climb in in cooler temperatures. It moves/stretches well. The shell fabric is durable enough for climbing. I've also used it quite a bit for backcountry skiing. It's a great layer over a base layer for skiing. Breathable, cuts some wind, durable enough to ski down through the trees. I really, really wish it packed into its own stuff pocket. For any piece that is designed for climbing, this would be an important feature in my mind. Easy to take on/off and then clip to your harness as temps change. I don't always climb with a pack so I appreciate the stuff pocket feature. I would have the same wish for the Atom SL. If it stuffed into its own pocket it would be perfect. I would sell my old ones and buy again if this feature were added to these jackets.

Yesterday I did repeat hill sprints in this jacket and a thin long sleeve baselayer. It was 52 degrees, windy, and drizzling. When I started I wasn’t cold and when I finished I wasn’t wet (from sweat or rain). Incredible jacket.

Great all round, a couple of suggestion

I've taken it mountaineering, hiking, xc skiing, running and for the most part really likes it. If the temperature is right, this is my jacket. It's breathable, durable, fits great for a climber build. It could be used for a wide variety of activities. Just one issue and one suggestion. The hood frequently moves over my eyes when I look up (climbing and xc-skiing). It needs an adjustment for the hood "high" or just makes it shorter. I don't ever remember needing 4 pockets for such a light jacket, but I wanted more pockets for something like the Proton LT or AR. I frequently stack this with the Proton LT and wish the LT had more pockets.

Perfection

I got the proton lt for cold weather activities where I know I am going to need some level of warmth, but I am also going to be exerting a large amount of energy. Fast paced winter hiking, moderate cross country skiing, or a hard skin up a ski trail are all good examples of this. For something slower, I'd chose the proton lt for the warmth and comfort. The fl definitely wins in the breathable competition. In terms of fit, my 5'11 frame and 30 " waist and 36" chest fit well with a sized small. Plenty of room to layer 1-2 base layers. The fit has nice length in the back, and the sleeves are plenty long. The cut of the material could be a bit more slim in the sleeves, but it is also very accommodating to any type of movement. The double chest pockets are real winners for mid-activity snacks or removing/adding layers, including hats, buffs and thin gloves. The fleece-lined pockets are wonderful and also flexible for a variety of small items. The face fabric is a real winner. No snagging or pilling to report of in terms of heavy day packs and touring bags, its reasonably wind-proof, and I have no fear of abrasion (unlike an atom or a cerium). The uninsulated hood is actually ideal for some level of protecting while exerting a lot of energy; use a hat if fearful of getting cold. The only minor complaint is that a really hard activity can overwhelm the breathability of the fabric and insulation; this can leave a clammy and damp feeling in several sections that don't get a lot of wind/air exposure. This includes the elbows/tricep region, and the mid-back region. This has only happened when I've gone on fast-paced runs in 20s F weather. Not the intention of this jacket; stick with the Trino for a better outcome. The infrared color is a real winner. In terms of a jacket, this is a true winner and punches above its weight in terms of breathability and warmth.
Q: Activity
A: Running, Hiking, Backcountry Skiing
Prosbreathable material, durable fabric, slim flexible fit, so many pockets
Conshighly aerobic activities can overwhelm jacket

Yes, I recommend this product.

Buying only one insulated jacket`? Buy this one.

I have had this jacket for three years now, and I am still in love with it. This has been my go-to jacket for most situations, as it possesses such versatile qualities. Its use ranges from a chilly summer night to rainy weather (with a shell, obviously) to way below freezing. Furthermore, its casual look makes it so that I can wear it in the city, feeling confident. In addition to its functions, it is durable and reliable. After heavy use for three years, the jacket is holding up surprisingly well. However, I am struggling with the zipper getting stuck at the very top, which is annoying, but it could be unique for my jacket. Arcteryx might have fixed this issue since my purchase.

super versatile layer

full disclosure - I'm an Arc'teryx employee, but had to write a review because I love the Proton FL! at 6' 0" and 170, a medium fits perfect. This thing wears like nails, breathes like crazy, and strikes a perfect balance of warmth without cooking you. i wear it around the office all day without fear of overheating, and can take it outside where it balances warmth with breathability, and when you throw a shell over the top, it's suddenly the warmest layer on the planet. so good.

Awesome Fall Layer

This is a great light insulating jacket. I am 5'10" about 168lbs and medium fits great. It breathes more than my Atom LT and has more pockets which is something I am always looking for. I haven't done anything noteworthy yet in it, but it feels like it can take whatever I'd need it to. The bad, I think it has the biggest logo out of all of my Arcteryx wardrobe. Not happy about that, because the logo looks normal on website. Still an awesome jacket.

Must have piece

This is one of my favorite arcteryx pieces I’ve owned in the past 20 years. It’s been used in Texas on damp days as well as chilled coastal hikes. The FL has a huge range of temperature dwellings which makes it so versatile as well as it’s super light and comfortable. The hood gets complained about a lot but most of the time if you need a hood, you’re going to be in a down jacket or a waterproof shell. All in all, this is a great everyday go to piece that’s super light and gets used by family members if your not using it;) You won’t be disappointed if you’re looking for a all around piece that sheds light precipitation as well as cool summer nights. Additionally, layering under a shell, it’s prob the only layering piece you’ll need for most activities. My only con would be that my Mother as well as my lady wish Arc’teryx made the women’s more like the men’s and in a true black. Other than that, it’s a win win-)

Breathability

I have many pieces of Arcteryx gear, and this is one of my absolute favorites. The way that it keeps me warm in cool conditions at low output, yet keeps me from overheating and getting too sweaty at medium to high ouput, is magical, and surpasses any other jacket I've tried so far. Arcteryx has nailed their use of insulation in this garmet, so that each part of the upper body has just what it needs. For me, at 6' and 150 lbs, the fit with a size medium is also perfect, as is the case for me with pretty much all Arcteryx gear in size medium. I find this jacket to be very comfortable, and I also love the appearance in Firoza blue.

My new go-to jacket

I was curios how this jacket perform compared to my Atom SL Hoody. They are fairly similar, but I prefer the fit and details on this one, e.g. that the cuffs are elastic. Maybe this jacket could further distance it self from Atom SL by being even more breathable. Maybe some fleece underneeth the arm pits.

Prosbreathable, nice fit, feels good over just a t-shirt
Consno fleece under armpits

Good enough to replace the Atom LT

I didn't think it was possible but this has knocked my husband's Atom LT off it's perch as the most reached for item he owns. His one complaint is how it's shorter in the front - nice for mtb but it meant he had to go up a size from his usual Arcteryx size so his belly button wasn't hanging out. It also means his shirt typically hangs below on the front a bit, even with the bigger size now. Other than that minor fit issue he is such a fan he's been eyeing up the AR version for winter.
Q: Activity
A: Hiking, working outside, mtb, around town
Prosbreathable, can be used as a layer, sheds light rain, surprisingly warm
Consshort in the front

Yes, I recommend this product.

Favorite jacket so far

Breathable insulation with a windprotection hood and climbing harness compatible fit! The fit is exactly like my Proton AR but with less insulation which really helps this piece be used 4 season. When pared under a shell the jacket keeps the heat trapped inside for cold spring days. Yet the active insulation works great for high output activities that I'd normally have to layer down for. The hood can be stretched to fit over a climbing helmet but I found it more comfortable to wear under it

Not bad

Overall not a bad jacket. Wish there was some insulation in the hood or that there was a version with no hood. Also I wish that the cuffs were a bit tighter but otherwise quite good.
