The right fit

This jacket has met the challenge for everything I have had for it so far, all while giving an exceptional fit, something I often struggle with for shells. I am 6'2" and 190lbs, not abnormally long arms but long enough to not fit many jackets. From single track riding, xc skiing, backpacking my little one around, and walking the dog, it has held up beautifully and performed as expected. The biggest star for me is the stand up collar, it makes a massive difference to close out the elements and seal in the heat when the wind chill is stiff. No wonder it is a fixture to the stellar Arc'teryx lineup
Q: Pros:
A: Exceptional Fit
Q: Cons:
A: Helmet hood
Q: Activity
A: General outdoor pursuits

Yes, I recommend this product.

THE all arounder

I picked this up about 2 months ago, honestly worth every cent. First day out wearing it I was caught in a downpour. Was I wet? Nope, not at all. The material is thick and makes a little noise, maybe as it breaks in it will be quieter so sneaking up on Sasquatch will have to wait. It fits about spot on, pockets are in a usable spot. This is the jacket you need, it’s the do it all, see it all jacket to travel the world with. Just don’t try to be a Sasquatch catcher........... at first.
Q: Pros:
A: Does everything
Q: Cons:
A: Are there?
Q: Activity
A: Hiking, mountaineering, snowshoeing

Yes, I recommend this product.

Best all round jacket you can have

I bought this jacket a few months ago and it has turned out to be the best investment I could make. Went for a good long steep hike and the jacket held up to all of it’s accolades. Kept me dry, pit zips allowed me to not get too sweaty and the well thought out hood kept me completely dry. My only regret is that I didn’t buy it sooner as I went snow shoeing earlier in the year and got drenched with a competitors jacket. Fabulous jacket, the Beta AR and I highly recommend it to anyone seeking full protection from the elements.
Q: Activity
A: Hiking walking snow shoeing

Yes, I recommend this product.

AR really means ALL AROUND

I bought this jacket for an Iceland trip as it’s light weight, packs down small, but could also deal with the wind and rain. It was the perfect jacket for Iceland as the layer goretex is 100% waterproof and wind proof. It held up against everything Iceland throw at us over 8 days of hiking and exploring in the rain, snow, wind and the low temperatures. I also use it back home in Flordia as a rain jacket. It’s so extremely breathable so it works better than my thinner lighter rain jacket is not breathable so during the spring and summer showers I feel clammy and hot. I also use it skiing in winter and again its perfect! Enough warmth for the lefts and breathability during exertions. The Bata AR is a go-to for and output with full wind proof waterproof features.
Q: Pros:
A: To many to list
Q: Cons:
A: None but maybe the price
Q: Activity
A: All around

Yes, I recommend this product.

Do it all

I’ve had this jacket for the winter and now into the spring. Used in a variety of conditions for both casual use, hikes, and snowboarding. Worked amazing in all conditions with great durability. Looks great and fits great! The collar makes layering up with hooded mid-layers difficult. I wish there was a small side pocket for RFID cards for resorts. I know it’s not a ski/snowboard specific jacket, but a small side pocket would be helpful.
Q: Pros:
A: Great durability and performance.
Q: Cons:
A: Noisy, Collar, Side Pocket
Q: Activity
A: Snowboard, hiking, casual

Yes, I recommend this product.

A jacket that can do anything

I bought this to replace a Beta Lt. Jacket features are well placed. You can definitely see how much work goes in to designing these jackets it fits perfectly with multiple layering systems when hitting the mountains. I would highly recommend this jacket. May be a higher price tag but taken care of my last one has lasted for 9 years and still keeps the rain/wind/snow out

Great jacket !!!

Beta AR !! What a jacket !! Walked in the store to buy a Sabre AR and walked out with the Beta AR in Dynasty. I was told “trust me!” I did, and I’m extremely happy with it! The fit is perfect -got a medium- it’s not trim fit but still closer to the body then the sabre or the Rush and with the mid layer, had a fleece T200 jacket, it fills it just perfectly. ( I will be buying the Proton LT next). The first time I wore I was skiing under pouring rain for over 7 hours, had papers in my pocket, when done they were bone dry !! I did not over heat nor was I cold!! flexibility was good didn’t bother me in any of my skiing. I like the new collar but it’s close to the neck that you can’t have to many layers there, nothing thick. but I like it. The hood works well with a helmet, just adjusting it is not as fast as I thought. Only thing I wished it had a side pocket on the arm and specially a internal pocket that really can be useful. Other then that an awesome jacket !!! Highly recommended and versatile to any season and literally any activity Thank you guys !!
Q: Pros:
A: Versatile for literally everything!
Q: Cons:
A: Missing internal pockets
Q: Activity
A: Skiing

Yes, I recommend this product.

Makes me feel like a high end jacket should

I was on the fence for a long time as I really wanted the jacket but the price was a stretch for me. I finally bit the bullet and even then wasnt sure if I was ok with it.... Until I used it. Everytime I put my jacket on it makes me feel exactlty how a high end technical piece of clothing should make you feel. Confident in the protection it provides, bone dry. I love the pocket options
Q: Pros:
A: Everything it boasts
Q: Cons:
A: Sleeves are pretty long
Q: Activity
A: Hiking, Camping, general outdoors in the Pacific North West downpours

Yes, I recommend this product.

Great jacket for skiing and anything else!

Replaced my Sidewinder after about 12 years with this jacket. It fits well, and the materials are nice and crisp, very water repellant (like all gore-tex) and easy to move in. I love the collar as it stands on its own without needing the hood which is great for skiing or cool days. This year I've worn the jacket in just about every condition imaginable and it's done great keeping me dry and warm.
Q: Pros:
A: waterproof, good fit, great collar
Q: Cons:
A: no powder skirt
Q: Activity
A: Skiing, hiking, outdoors

Yes, I recommend this product.

Love it

I’ve skied in this 23 days now this year and love it. It keeps you 100% dry on heavy rain/snow mix days, surprisingly breathable, and if you need to dump heat if you are hiking or on days where it’s sunny you can utilize the vents. The only thing I would change is the chest pockets to be more vertical like the alpha line of jackets but thats a very small complaint for an over all awesome jacket.
Q: Pros:
A: Waterproof, vents, hood
Q: Cons:
A: like to see vertical chest pockets
Q: Activity
A: Skiing, hiking, hunting, fishing

Great jacket with an amazing warranty

I had a Beta AR in 2010. Served me well for a solid decade. I have lived in Nunavut and wore this as part of a layered setup. When a cold blizzard is blasting and you need to keep going, this is what you want to wear... or maybe the SV version but I was walking to the grocery not crossing antarctica. In 10 years, the goretex did not delaminate, but the bottom fold holding the bottom cord came unglued. I contacted the customer support expecting to be told it was out of warranty and that they couldn't do anything. But to the contrary, they were standing behind their product. I was really happy with the solution they proposed and I ended up ordering another of the same jacket but this year. The construction quality is outstanding. The fabric feels even more rugged than my old one. If you read stories about delamination, or glue coming off, know 2 things: it usually happens after more than a few years, and arc'teryx does stand behind their product. Can you think of many other pieces of clothing that lasted you a decade?
Q: Pros:
A: Warranty
Q: Cons:
A: Upfront cost
Q: Activity
A: Walking, hicking, alpine skiing, rock climbing

Yes, I recommend this product.

Truly an all-rounder

This sturdy Gore-Tex shell is my go-to outer-layer when I need the most weather protection. For wet days, it keeps me dry, and when it's bone-chilling cold and windy, it's a great barrier between my insulation and the harsh world outside. Zippers are in the right places, hood fits over a helmet, cuffs are easy to manipulate with gloves, and no superfluous peices.
Q: Pros:
A: Bomber construction. Waterproof.
Q: Cons:
A: Not a fan of the collar
Q: Activity
A: Skiing, Alpinism, backpacking

Yes, I recommend this product.

Replaced an ancient Beta SV - super impressed

I had a Beta SV that was old enough that I don't even remember when I bought it. Decided that it was finally time to reward myself with a new shell. Honestly, I didn't even know what these felt like - it was Covid-time, and I ordered the Beta AR on faith through the site. It's truly amazing - customizable, breathable and ridiculously light. Once, I thought it was my light Japanese rain jacket when I grabbed it out of the closet in the dark. So good. Kingfisher is a great, deep dark blue and the fit is definitely "athletic" - it fits me but without too much room to spare after quarantine 15. Length is great - hits just below the waist.
Q: Pros:
A: Features/breathability/weight/looks
Q: Cons:
A: Price
Q: Activity
A: General outdoorsiness in upstate NY

Yes, I recommend this product.

Love this jacket ... have to get a 2nd one

I got the 2019 Midnight Sun Beta AR and I love this jacket so much that I had to get another one when a newer 2020 with rugged Goretex Pro was available as my spare. I got the Rhapsody color and love the distinguishing coloured dual layer. The jacket is great on layering and I can easily wear up to four layers and this as my fifth when we hit a sudden snow storm while hiking up Panorama Ridge at the Garibaldi park. A great wind breaker and rain proof.
Q: Pros:
A: Rain and wind proof
Q: Cons:
A: Shorter length than Zeta AR
Q: Activity
A: Hiking

Yes, I recommend this product.

Best all-around shell

Bought this jacket about a year ago and very happy with it. It is my favorite all-around shell in the Arc'teryx line. I have used it casually in urban environments as a standalone in the rain and as a shell over a puffer in the winter, as well as for high output winter activities in the back country. It fulfills all purposes very well. It is durable but also very aesthetically appealing. I'm 5'8 and around 155lbs and bought a small, which fits almost perfectly aside from the fact that the sleeves are slightly on the longer side.
Q: Pros:
A: Useful in various conditions
Q: Activity
A: Around town; backcountry winter activities

Yes, I recommend this product.

Wish for stormhood

I chose this Beta AR over Sabre and Alpha because of the lightweight and hand pockets as Sabre is not light and Alpha does not have hand pockets. I liked Alpha AR with stormhood and lightweight for my bike commute in winter and the designer should add hand pockets. Even climbers will benefit hand pockets as actual use of climbing will be less than 1% if its life and will want hand pockets 99% of its use for rain and skiing. I cannot buy Alpha for bike commute and Sabre for skiing and Beta for backcountry skiing, i just want one jacket for all activities (actually i have one for summer rain jacket which is Zeta FL and that is great except FL does not come with underarm zips). If Sabre come with removable powder skirt like a Higher model now does, it would have been a good choice. For now i use Beta AR for winter and Zeta FL for summer and will wait for a good all in one. You can do it Arcteryx. All good except; Beta AR’s hood is not stormhood like Alpha or Sabre have,
Q: Pros:
A: Lightweight
Q: Cons:
A: No stormhood
Q: Activity
A: Ski hike backcountryski RainJacket

Yes, I recommend this product.

Misleading product photo’s and poor quality

I live in the Northwest Territories where it is still cool well into spring and summer. I bought this jacket last year looking for a medium weight jacket that would keep me warm on cold days hiking, kayaking, camping etc. In the product photo, to me, this looks like a medium weight jacket. It is not. It’s strictly just a rain shell with no insulation at all, and is not even durable as I tore the sleeve when I brushed against the corner of a shelf at the grocery store. It makes me physically sick to think I paid $750 for a rain shell worth less than $100. I have submitted a product service request to fix the sleeve, but my understanding is that I’ll be responsible for shipping it to arcteryx which is pricey coming from so far up north, so more money to be spent on this trash bag with a brand name slapped on it. This was my first and last purchase from arcteryx.
Q: Pros:
A: Waterproof (before tear), fits well
Q: Cons:
A: Overpriced, poor quality
Q: Activity
A: Hiking, fishing, camping, kayaking

No, I do not recommend this product.

Customer Support
Hello Chelsea, Thank you for reaching out to Arc'teryx with your feedback on the Beta AR Jacket. We're sorry to hear about the confusion that you experienced with choosing the correct product for your needs and for the durability issues you have come up against with your Beta AR Jacket. The Beta AR Jacket is exclusively a shell for weather protection and it sounds like an insulated piece from our Atom or Proton line may have suited a bit better in this case. We notice you have started a Product Service Request, and we hope to assist you with a suitable solution for your jacket. If you have any additional comments or concerns, please feel free to contact our Customer Service Line at 1-866-458-2473 (available Monday-Friday 8:00 AM- 5:00 PM PST), and one of our representatives would be glad to chat with you. All the best

So you rated this shell 1 star because it's just a shell. I mean it's literally in the product category, subtitle, description and no where on the photos or the product description does it say it has any kind of insulation. Maybe try the "Insulated jacket" category next time? I have lived in Nunavut for years and when the windshield was below -60C during cold snaps, a Beta AR jacket served me extremely well for layering, which is what this is made to do. I can hardly see how you can fault a company for your inability to read.
