Amazing all around-er

Probably my all time favorite jacket. It's super packable and I bring it almost everywhere. Light enough for warm but windy nights, also warm enough for very chilly ones. I do usually run very hot, and this is just enough to keep me from getting cold in most situations besides in snow/freezing/downpours.

The superlight, shoulder-season jacket

I have been able to put this jacket through multiple conditions this shoulder season: From light snow and wind at 12,000ft to a light breeze in the Santa Fe woods to airplanes and climbing rock as the sun sets in New England. This packs down small enough to throw in a cinch bag and carry on a harness as well capable enough to break the wind just enough on the fall nights to keep you warm on your descent from the alpine. I highly recommend this jacket - I will HIGHLY stress that this is a superlight (SL) jacket and that comes with the notion that grams are shaved to make it as light as possible and that comes with some drawbacks. The zippers and pockets are all up to Arcteryx quality - I have seen a couple of stitching issues right around the wrists where you might pull harder than you want but overall, this thing is a must. I think if you love being fast and light but also prepared this is the perfect jacket for windy days, chillier fall and spring days and also as a mid-layer for ice climbing with a shell on if it is not blistering cold.

ATOM SL in Lofoten Norway

Bought it for my Lofoten Norway hiking Trip as my active Layer. Pro: just the right amount of insulation , Acts like a windbreaker and withstands light rain , breathes extremly well. Cons : very fragile fabric, have a big rip in the Back just by leaning exhausted on a Rock , Arms are awkwardly long , so long in fact that i have to go to a Tailor and shorten them., lacks a chest pocket which would make this piece so super good . Summary: Its a good active layer for Summer hikes in the Mountains at temps from 5-15*C . Cut it weird. For Reference im 1.77cm and 82kg and i have bought Size L . Size M was better in the Sleeve length but made my belly look fatty .

Perfect!

Purchased at the Arc'teryx Castle Rock Outlet (think it was 40% off) and now it is my go to piece for those 5 am backcountry touring starts. Perfect start cold piece that provides great wind protection and also breathes very well. Everyone who ventures into the alpine should have this piece in their kit. Packs up nice and small and weighs almost nothing (grams count). The Sprint color is by far the best when you need that high viz.

Wonderful

Have one for three years and wear it almost every day in winter as the middle layer. It keeps me the basic warm and it never get trouble when you sweat or when it rains. For colder days you might need to add some more layers but it is always the best second or third layer. I also wear it in a 150km cycling event with a real wet raing and cold weather, but it dry very fast when the weather become better. Daily use is also nice, I even wear it in office when it's a little cold. The only negative thing is the side get pill a little after some time, however it does not really bothers

Wondering

I own a vest, hood, and beta jacket, all in large. They fit me with a little extra room. Perfect! Now the cut has been changed and the large atom sl that I bought just fits. I read about the changes but the extra large would be too long in the sleeves and way too long in the body. I love the wait and quality of the product. Just confused on the change up of the cut.

Why?

I bought the Atom SL about 3 weeks ago. I am 5'4" and have a 44" chest. I bought the large and it fits. The thing I don't understand is why are all your models 6' tall and slim. I would have liked to see the hood on a shorter person to get a idea on how the sleeves and overall length would be. I have a of other jackets that large fits me on the more room side of things. Just wondering about why you have changed the way you coats are cut now?

Nice, but with a hood issue.

A nice item, but there's something not quite right about the hood. Its lower lateral panel is not cut to be tall enough and consequently there's not enough material to contour to the neck and it pulls the top half of the hood down on the head in an uncomfortable way. It also slightly restricts the turning of the head to either side. That's my experience having tried it on.

Disappointed

The front zipper doesn't lock so any activity will cause the zipper to slide down (except when it's fully zipped). For example, I'll zip up 3/4 of the way before my run. After about a quarter mile, I have to zip up the jacket again...and repeat that every quarter mile. Had this problem with a different Arcteryx jacket a few years ago. How does a premium brand not use locking zippers on a $240 jacket. Lame.

No slip zips are different than locking zipper sliders. No slip zippers have about 3 or 4 catch points on the zipper where the zipper should not move past when wearing it normally. However, like you mentioned, these do not lock and will move if you pull the fabric. Inflexible Hood

Body/coreloft isolation: perfect although not that thick/warm but precisely ok Arms not with isolation, for running/cycling okay. Only thing I don’t like is the hood which is not flexible. I wear it under a hard shell/allweather thin jacket gore Tex and put on my atom sl first with hood on, then jacket and if you afterwards want to pull the hood down it won’t work wile it’s not flexible … That could be fixed in my opinion. (Just like the Atom Lt hoody, but then with coreloft 40…. Size M fits close to the body, perfect. (178cm/72kg/normal)

Fit and function

This is my second one of these jackets. I like it as a nice jacket for when it’s a little colder but you don’t need a full on warm heavy jacket. Fit is good for me as the sleeves are a nice length.

Great for what it is

Ridiculously light and extremely comfortable. I keep forgetting I’m wearing it! I think this is going to be perfect for jacket for “sweater weather” season and cool hikes. If you are wanting something for low output activities under 12 degrees Celsius I’d get one of the other Atoms but then you’ll have nothing for when it’s warmer but still chilly.

Very good with room for improovement

I bought this jacket for sportive activities like hiking and cycling. Its windproof, slightly waterproof, very light, it holds the warmth inside, looks great with very good fit and its also breathable. If you would change one little thing, this jacket would bet without any competition for sure. You could add this USP if you would change the material between front and back, which is there for breathing I guess, into merino whool or any other anti bacterial material. Reason for that is, the jacket stinks very quickly in this area due to synthetic material and I am not a great sweater. In order to that, I need to wash it a lot which is not good for the material and waterproofnes. Also, you could coat the inside with merino whool as an antibacterial and warmth layer. Merino also drys very quickly :)

Great features

I’ve got the half zip version of this and I love it. It is the perfect warmth for winter hiking in BC when an atom LT is too warm. I just used this up and down hiking to a peak in the monashees with only a base layer underneath and it was the perfect temperature. The hood and neck on mine aren’t like my atom LT, the neck is reinforced so it’s actually a pretty good neck “protector” from wind. The hood isn’t insulated but it too is really good for windy days and it’s also got a built in visor similar to the hoods on the hard shell jackets—just not as robust. I have found my atom sl to be the perfect outer layer for hiking and winter running, or when I need an extra layer.

Durable, water resistant and great customer care

I purchased an older model of this jacket and still use it to this day, after somewhere around 4-5 years of heavy wear and tear. Despite not being water proof it sheds/repels rain pretty well, except under torrential conditions, and I've used it variably as a base layer under a shell for snow, as my go-to shoulder season layer and as a rain jacket in moderate to mild conditions. I've climbed multi-pitch and done a lot of other heavy use rec and it has held up through the years with limited nicks and tears, that have been super easy to patch with some gear tape. My favorite part of the jacket though is likely the fact that somewhere around year 2 or 3 of owning it, I tore off the zipper. I reached out to Arc'teryx and they offered to fix the zipper for free. It was the holidays so I opted to repair myself to skip the turnaround time, so they sent me a replacement zipper for free (didn't even pay shipping) and even emailed me a video on how to complete the repair myself!

Shoddy Customer Service on Product Warranty Claim

Shoddy Customer Service on Product Warranty Claims I’ll preface this review by stating I absolutely love my Atom SL, I’ve had four of them, and wouldn’t have bought so many if it wasn’t one of my favorite pieces of gear. Rather….this review is related to customer service issues I’ve had trying to get a repair done on my Atom SL. Previously, I had a completely different Arcteryx jacket (model is irrelevant), where the teeth on the main zipper chipped off, requiring a new zipper. I contacted Arcteryx Customer Service to see what my options are. They confirmed chipped zipper teeth are covered under their lifetime warranty (as they should be), and damage such as this wouldn’t fall under mis-use or normal wear-and-tear. Their initial response was for me to mail the jacket in (on my own dime), have it repaired, and then have it sent back to me. This was an issue for me because A) it would require me not having the product for multiple weeks while it was being repaired, and B) the cost of shipping would have been more than the cost to have the zipper simply repaired at a local shop. So naturally, I asked if there were any other options…. They said that if I wanted to repair the jacket locally out of my own pocket, that is ok, but that it would void their lifetime warranty. To compensate for this, they offered me a product voucher worth roughly 50% of the product. All I had to do was simply make a mark on the tag of the product so that it could never be used in a future warranty claim. I was very happy with this compromise and proceeded with this option. Fast forward to this year….. I literally had the EXACT SAME damage issue to my Atom SL (chipped teeth on the main zipper). I contacted customer service and again was told to mail it in for repairs. Besides the two issues I mentioned above, they also mentioned the replacement zipper would not be the OEM color (wouldn’t match the other zipper colors), but they would do their best to get it close. This may boil down to personal preference, but if I am paying $200-$700USD for a jacket, and then have to pay to ship it in for repairs, I would prefer to not have it look like a “Frankenstein” jacket with multi-colored zippers. It looks trashy, low quality, and cheap (even if they are functionally the same). I contacted them again and made a reference to how my previous product repair warranty claim was handled. Their first response was to mail it in (again, on my own dime), forfeit the jacket, and I would be issued a 20% (not 50%) product voucher code. Please take note, for a $220 jacket, 20% is roughly $40USD, which, if you subtract the shipping to send it to them, is closer to $20-$30USD. So naturally, I asked two questions. #1: Why was I allowed to self-repair and keep my first product, but for my Atom SL I have to forfeit it and send it in. #2: Why was I given a 50% product voucher code for my first claim, and now only a 20% voucher code for my second claim. I got a lot of run-around from multiple customer-service agents and had to escalate my issue to a manager. They never could actually give me a direct answer as to why self-repairs were allowed before, but now all claims absolutely must be mailed in via the ReWEAR program. They also could not explain why I could keep the jacket and get 50% towards a new product, but now have to forfeit the jacket and only get 20%. I was simply told that they were “making exceptions” for me, and I could take my 20% or get lost. Not exactly great customer service for one of the top-tier outdoor clothing companies. I still love my Atom SL, as well as all my other Arcteryx products, but their products are obviously more expensive that most other gear on the market. One of the main reasons I am willing to pay that premium is for the lifetime warranty and supposedly, good customer service. When I am told I have to mail a $220 jacket in, lose it, and only get a $40 bucks, it’s almost like a slap in the face. I am quite curious if they will actually answer the questions I’ve listed above, or if they will provide some brief/curt answer stating that franken-steining an extremely expensive jacket together is really the best that they can do.

Never left at home!

I've had this jacket for a couple of year and mostly use it for hiking and climbing in the spring/ summer/ autumn. I am planning on running in it this winter and I imagine it would also be a great ski touring layer. It could also be used as a mid-layer in colder months. The helmet compatible hood and high hand pockets are great for use with a harness making it an excellent alpine/ climbing jacket. It's so lightweight that that there really isn't any reason not to bring it on an adventure. The only improvement I would make would be for it to pack into its own pocket in order for it to go on the back of a harness.
