The best shell you can get

I bought the Alpha SV after wearing other shells form Mammut, NF and Arc'teryx: this is simply the best shell jacket i've owned. First observation: i'm 6'2'', 90kg, athletic fit, and i've opted for an M size, seeing how this jacked is huge in L/XL. Indeed the M fits perfectly on me, leaving room for a mid layer and granting plain of movement during trekking and/or standard activities. It also looks very good, giving an extreme sensation of protection, but without the feeling of wearing an heavyweight armor. The fabric seem very durable, much better than the 30/65D you'll find on other jackets, and albeit a little more rigid, it adheres perfectly to your body (choosing a smaller size than your usual one). The shell is also quite light considering it's a 100D and integrates a Recco sensor. Yep, it's an expensive shell, but you won't regret any penny spent on it. PS - if you wear it together woth other black Arc'teryx/Veilance stuff, the tone of black (softer) match perfectly with them, without any visible color range differences.

Armor against bad weather conditions

I am using the Alpha SV Jacket for half a winter season now and truly is the best jacket I have ever owned. It is rock solid against rain, snow and wind and it feels like wearing an armor against bad weather conditions. Material feels extremely rugged and after half a season of usage in professional mountaineering the jacket doesn't show a single scratch or sign of usage.

Very limited warranty-misleading

Don't rely on Arc'teryx's Warranty. I purchased this jacket and got less than 4 year of seasonal use out of it, likely less than 200 days. I washed it using Arc'teryx Nu wash and DWR, and stored it in an indoor closet. It delaminated and was replaced, but when the replacement started to delaminate (under similar use), I was told my replacement jacket wasn't covered under their limited warranty. It seems Arc'teryx products don't last as long as they lead you to believe, and their warranty isn't reliable either.

A: Delamination issues

No, I do not recommend this product.

Just to pour salt on the wound, I've had a similar experience with delamination. But Arc'teryx wouldn't warranty it even the first time. Said 4 years was less than the span of the useful life warranty.

Bulletproof Outerwear

I have nothing bad to say about this garment, I bought it in 2002 and it's only now starting to fall apart. The nylon outer shell is seperating from the XCR fabric, and the front pocket zips are now coming unglued from the nylon shell. I bought another Alpha SV jacket in 2005 that I've NEVER WORN because I hadn't worn this one out yet like I thought I would, I'm looking forward to wearing my new Black 2005 Alpha SV jacket next winter.

A Veteran Guide's Testament: The Arc'teryx Alpha S

In the realm of outdoor gear, where innovation meets the demands of the elements, the Arc'teryx Alpha SV Jacket stands as a monumental testament to quality, durability, and craftsmanship. My journey with the Alpha SV began in its inaugural year, a time when I was working at the Whistler Escape Route. Even then, it was clear that this jacket was something special, a marvel of product innovation that promised not just protection but also a pioneering spirit in design. Twenty-six years have since passed, and my relationship with the Alpha SV has not wavered. While the jackets have changed over the years, the essence of what made them exceptional has not. The Alpha SV has been a constant companion in my guide's pack, a reliable ally against the unpredictable fury of nature. From the rugged shores of British Columbia's North Coast to the high-altitude trails of Nepal, and the icy expanses of the southern ice cap in Chili, this jacket has faced it all. Its resilience in the face of harsh elements is unparalleled, a beacon of reliability when the weather turns foul. The Alpha SV's design is a balance of lightness and robustness, a combination that many seek but few find. It's not the lightest jacket on the market, but its durability, functionality, and protection against severe weather make it an indispensable piece of gear for anyone who respects the outdoors. As a guide, I've put this jacket through the wringer, and even when it showed signs of wear, it never failed to shield me from wind, rain, and snow. Its Gore-Tex fabric ensures breathability while offering unmatched waterproofing, a testament to Arc'teryx's commitment to using high-quality materials. In conclusion, the Arc'teryx Alpha SV Jacket is more than just a piece of clothing; it's a shield against the elements, a companion on countless adventures, and a testament to what's possible when innovation meets the demands of the wild. For those in search of gear that has been tested and proven by the trials of time and nature, the Alpha SV is unrivaled. It may not be the lightest, but it offers a perfect balance of lightness and robustness that seasoned adventurers will appreciate. As a veteran guide, I can attest to its enduring quality and performance. The Alpha SV is not just a jacket; it's a vital piece of any serious outdoor enthusiast's arsenal FX the Guide ACMG, CAA pro, CGI Canyon Guide, Paddle Canada Kayak instructor.

Only 1 problem

Perfect Jacket but can Arc' please make the torso longer. Or at least make it have no hem. Please please. The jacket pops out of my harness when I ice climb and the longer torso will keep me warmer and sealed from the cold better.

Horribly Leaky Zippers

The front main zipper leaks to the point that after an hour in the rain I have an inch and a half wide wet strip down the center of my chest. I have had the zipper replaced by Arcteryx (after arguing with support about it) only to immediately have the same problem. The pocket zippers which are different and covered do not seem to leak, it's simply a horrible design. This supposed to be the most robust jacket in the line and it can't even stand up to an hour of moderate rain and is not a functional jacket. I'm now stuck with a rain jacket that doesn't keep you dry and can't be trusted in the backcountry. I won't get into the support experience because that was another disaster but I am now being told that I am on my own. Another favourite of support is to say that "no zipper is waterproof", as if there is no difference between waterproof and being soaked to the skin through three layers. Bottom line is that I was sold that doesn't perform its function and is basically useless to me.

I am fully aware the jacket pictured is an Atom LT. It was worn underneath the Alpha SV and is an example of the leakage experienced on an hour hike while wearing the Alpha SV as the outer shell. I actually posted a caption stating this in the review submission form but it is completely missing on the review so I understand the confusion.

Best in Class Weather Protection!

Practicing guide, instructor and educator in the outdoor industry. In 2003, wore my first Alpha SV guiding in the backcountry of the Wind River Range in Wy. Since then, I have used and abused the Alpha SV across the globe in every imaginable climate, terrain, and form of precipitation. In my wide arsenal of outdoor protection, it is the first jacket I reach for when I know my safety and success in my objective is dependent on staying protected. The SV has survived the abusive and rugged terrain of the Northern Rockies, desert southwest, and even the gritty Daily gravel bike commutes in the temperate rainforest of of Western north Carolina for 3 years. Arcteryx is Justified in saying this Jacket is top of the class! AMGA Certified Rock Instructor LNT Level 2 (Master Educator) WEA Certified Outdoor Educator

Fabric defects

I recently purchased an Alpha SV LNY 24 limited edition jacket. However, I recently found out that there are some fabric defects on the back under the hood (it looks like some black dotted lines). I don't know why this limited-edition product has such terrible quality control.

Better narrower fit

At last Arc'tyrex now making the fit better. When I mean better, I mean the smaller sizes are cut narrower. At last, I'm not wearing a big baggy sack. IMO people choose a far too big fit. It needs to be a fairly snug fit with just enough room for extra layers. The arms are still far too long. Impeccable workmanship. I couldn't care less where it's made, as long as it lasts and is perfect. Let's see how long this new products lasts. Arctyrex, your biggest loss of sales must be due to garments falling apart at the seams.

Not fully tested (no rain yet) but love so far.

I bought this 2 weeks ago and so far it’s been great. I haven’t had an opportunity to rain test it yet but it has been very versatile so far. I’ve paired it with the breathable heavy weight Proton and am happy with the combo layering. I just finished a Nordic skate ski and it was too cold for my regular Nordic gear at -14 plus wind chill so I layered up. I got too hot after about 15 min of exertion but was easily ably to control my body temp by opening the arm vents and lowering the main zipper for airflow. Worked perfect.

Overpriced

Decent quality, good wind and rain protection. Minimal warmth value. Weird location of pockets. Massively overpriced. Made in Asia with lower quality control standards. Terrible customer service. Would not recommend doing any business with Arc’teryx. Returns and replacements will never be accepted.

Great jacket but doesn’t last!

Doesn’t last! First few years there’s nothing better, but eventually all the tape/glue goes. Repaired once, second time it was “beyond useful life.” That’s at least what Arc Teryx thought. For the price I would expect a high quality product.

Go everywhere

After 1 month, everyday with me! This is an amazing piece from Arc'teryx. With Alpha, You can go everywhere, and I can assume it will be okay through the whole year. Been traveling recently, airports, .... and it's very comfortable, smart, portable, perfect pockets, and even elegant as well. Regarding the size, I've bought the S, I am 170, 65Kg, fits a bit tight to be honest, but I think this is the way it should be. The upper side of the jacket is more comfortable, compare to the low, matter of design. Layering is crucial for the decision of the size, if you plan to get base layer, plus 2 mid layers, then size up. Myself happy with the S for the moment.

Just Great!

I've been using the jacket for about 3 weeks now. I've worn it on 7 ski tours and a few light climbs so far. The quality and workmanship are very good! The jacket is comfortable to wear! How well the jacket will hold up over the years remains to be seen, but I hope it will give me years of enjoyment! It's my 4th hardshell jacket so far and I have to say the weight/performance ratio is unbeatable! I took the jacket in size M because my last hardshell jacket was always a bit too short and tight for me (for example when climbing). The jacket therefore offers a lot of space to wear thick down underneath or to wear skins and/or gloves underneath to stow away the jacket. What was important to me personally is that I can move around in the jacket without any restrictions.

Not even close to the original!

Over priced and not made in British Columbia as the original jacket did! The original jacket was made with love and positive workmanship! With a price tag for most to buy and a warranty that was to stand by any defects! $900 for a jacket that really only cost $100 to make Is a sad cry from those good old days of Number 5 ykk Zippers and workmanship that was made proudly in BC! Plus these new jackets don't even fit like those original ones did!
