3rd in a Series of Alpha SV's since 2006

Yesterday I received the latest in a series of 3 Alpha SV shells that I've worn since 2006.
I wore my first Alpha SV shell all day, every day on a self-guided ascent of Denali in May 2007. On that trip, this shell's robust design was key to my comfort low on the mountain and it played a key role in withstanding Denali's heinous weather above 19,000 feet on summit day. This shell went on to serve me well for years after in adventures in the Lower 48, too.
After I wore that first shell out, I wore the 2nd in this series of shells for everything from technical winter ascents and ice climbing outings in Colorado, to a ton of in bounds and backcountry ski days in all kinds of weather. Last year that shell was a key piece of gear on a week-long backcountry trip in BC where we experienced deep, deep powder and low temps of -35 degF.
My latest Alpha SV shell promises to deliver more years of equally stellar performance. And its design meets the unique needs of my build. For example, this Alpha SV shell has a hood that will properly fit over a helmet worn on my enormous gourd on top of my excessively long turkey neck. I've never owned another shell that could do that.

SV all the way!

My guide told me that rain jacket can't handle Patagonia's weather and eventually going to leak.
The morning that hiking on the John Garner pass, rain started and turned in the blizzard. We were in the bad weather for roughly 8 hours of 12 hours hike. My hiking friends were totally soaked with water which leak thru their jackets but not mine. I did not even have one single drop of water in my SV jacket. What a great jacket that I have!

This is my 2nd one. First one lasted 6yrs and was bomber!!!! Best hardshell on the market. In addition to having the best layers, arcteryx itself has phenomenal customer service and attention to detail.

Own it again because…

Owned this excellent jacket in 2001… bought latest. Didn’t need it… bought it because I love owning excellent products. Don’t climb mountains anymore… don’t expect to encounter extreme weather. But wearing this jacket brings back exciting memories.

The only jacket I will ever need!

I have had a Beta AR for some time and love it. Perfect for most conditions and bulletproof. I was gifted an Alpha SV and can see quite why it is the bombproof and only jacket I will need. Feels like I’m wearing armour plating.
The only small frustration was not being able to try it on in store before purchase as I was told that XXL is never stocked in store.

Not the product and company they used to be

I bought this jacket four years ago being the top and waterproof jacket from Arc’tryx. A jacket has held up recently well but I did have an issue with the zipper and sent it back in for warranty. The warranty response and customer service that I received was disappointing and not what used to be the standard for this company. I used to buy their equipment because their warranty was so amazing and it made it worth spending the money to get a good quality product, but I don’t think I will continue to buy Arc’tryx rain jackets in the future as their warranty to stand behind their products seems to have shifted to just pay you out a fraction of the price to try and get you to buy another one of their products.

Great Jacket!

Using this jacket as an daily in the city and also for adventures in the mountains. The breathability is okay, in my opinion a little too low but waterproofness is a 10/10. If you bought the jacket in the right size the fitting and mobility is great! All in all I’m super happy with this piece!

Bomber so far

I bought this Alpha SV for skiing, even though I knew it was designed for climbing and harness use. I’ll admit, I was swayed by the color. I used to wear a size small, but opted for a medium in this jacket for a bit more room and a slightly longer fit. With my longer arms, the extra length in the sleeves hasn’t been an issue. I’ve gotten used to the “climber” style pockets, though having one right above my beacon does make my chest feel pretty packed with gear. The super thick fabric is a bit "crunchy" but it doesn't bother me if it means I'm protected and dry.
