While he’s one of the best boulderers to come out of rock-strewn Norway, Thilo Schröter doesn’t chalk up his national championship titles or his successes to pure natural talent. He credits being uber-motivated – something he’s been since, as a 10 year old newcomer to Oslo, he walked into the city’s biggest indoor gym. Motivation isn’t all intrinsic -- Schröter gets a huge boost from the people he climbs with. “I’m the worst person to climb alone.” He loves the social nature of bouldering, the collective problem-solving, and sharing each other’s successes, and is proudest of the boulder problems he’s established across Norway. The effort that goes into scouring maps, scouting out possible locations, cleaning routes, and building good landings, is his chance to give back to the sport and the community that has been his primary source of energy in life. A route-setter at the local gym, Schröter also coaches “the most psyched kids in Oslo” with his partner Tina Johnsen Hafsaas, and makes his own wooden climbing holds. To make his small apartment more COVID-19-comfortable to share with Johnsen Hafsaas, Schröter turned his carpentry skills to the task of building an office – on a platform levitating in the air. Who would rest on the ground, when you could hang out in some airy, precarious place? Certainly not Schröter, whose gymnastic ease turns the whole world into a playground.
