Worse, But Better?

This is a decent remix of a Veilance classic. It’s longer and wider than the 2019 (which is IMO the best version and was made in Canada). The material feels thinner, more like nylon, and has a cheaper look in some ways. However, the material is lighter, PFAS-free, and the coat is slightly warmer at lower temps (zero cold spots at -10 waiting for the bus). The down runs to the bottom of the coat unlike previous versions, which makes this more of a dedicated winter coat. The new front pocket position allow for a different but surprisingly comfortable hand position. One downside is that the front pockets aren’t lined and they no longer sit behind a wall of down (it’s just naked interior shell in there). Hands do still stay fairly warm in the pockets though, but I wonder if the interior material will develop grease stains and compromise the Gore-Tex (this has happened to other pieces usually in the neck or armpits area if it isn’t laundered regularly). Anyway, not sure why the soft fleece lining from previous models was removed. Final thoughts: Veilance purists are definitely going to dislike this update (and rightly complain that it wasn’t manufactured in Canada), but it’s a better iteration for those needing a real winter coat. It’s also not tailored like the previous versions, so it’s a more contemporary fit. So, if you still wear slim fit jeans and live in Vancouver, grab the previous model at the outlet. Also, this fit allows for easy layering, and with a conduit vest underneath this thing is like a Sorin parka. Anyway, final final thoughts: if Arc’teryx releases a 2025 version with lined pockets I’m going cry into my coat and then watch my tears roll off the waterproof Gore-Tex.

To be honest I've grown to like this iteration more. The unlined pockets still irk me - can't shake the idea that they were omitted to save a few cents - but the cut and comfort are top notch. My previous review still stands re: the distribution of down in the larger silhouette. I've layered with a Conduit as well just for fun and the heat was definitely there.

Avoid this coat. Not worth it.

The Monitor Down Coat was once an icon—a gold standard for technical performance and minimalist urban design. I owned the original Monitor Down, purchased around 2016/17, and it was truly exceptional. Unfortunately, this current version is a significant downgrade from the previous generation, which is disappointing to see. Everything about this new iteration feels average: the build, the quality, the materials, and even the overall look and feel. It lacks the premium essence that once defined this coat. Frankly, it resembles something you’d expect to find in the $200-$300 range at any retail store—not a jacket priced at nearly $2,000. This shift feels like a step backward for the Veilance line as a whole. It diminishes what made the brand stand out, and as a result, I won’t be purchasing this coat again.

Great coat to keep warm during this winter

They lost the vision on this coat, the initial version 1 Monitor Down Coat was much better. Hidden zippers, less baggy, and the way they stitched the pockets. This new version just misses the line.

Thank you for sharing your feedback on the Monitor Down Coat. We're glad to hear you liked the previous version, but we're sorry this new one didn't meet your expectations. This updated model features a more relaxed fit for expanded layering options and uses a comfortable, PFAS-free GORE-TEX ePE fabric. This product runs larger and we encourage you to explore our sizing chart and considering sizing down if you're between sizes or prefer a more tailored look. We appreciate your input!

Zipper is a pain

This model offers some great improvements, such as the double-zipper, a full-length lining, and more inner pockets. However, the main zipper is disappointing—it’s hard to close, feels cheap, and doesn’t seem very durable. For the next version, I hope they focus on upgrading the main zipper!

A: Nice improvements
Q: Cons:
A: The main Zipper sucks

Yes, I recommend this product.

Updated fit, downgraded package

This Monitor Down Coat improves in a few ways upon the previous iteration, yet drops the ball severely elsewhere. Pros: the roomy fit allows for layering and is very comfortable to move in. The dump pocket makes sense for a winter product. People asked for a double zip, now it’s there. The lining runs all the way down instead of stopping at the hips. The insulated collar is soft, warm and comfortable. Cons: The lining running down and the roomy fit, while still maintaining the same amount of down (roughly 146gr as per customer service replies) makes for a more distributed and thus less dense filling. This version of the coat feels a lot less warm than the previous ones. The face fabric feels plasticity and cheap compared to the rough almost cotton-like nylon of older iterations. It’s also very crinkly. I used to like Veilance shells for the upgraded face fabrics. The patterning has been dumbed down - no signature notched cuffs, which could be annoying at times but really showed off the manufacturing and design premium. No ultrasuede chin guard. No fleece lining in the pockets, really? In a winter parka? This product feels like a downgrade and an exercise in cost cutting. It almost seems like the designers had to take it down a notch in order for the Sorin Down Parka to exist. The result is a coat that looks the part but performs a lot worse than what it tries to emulate. Quite disappointing, which is a pity.

Great for cold non-windy days

It is a terrific looking coat and really warm. The color is great and fine knitting details makes it look amazing. I get a lot of eyebrows going up when people see the coat, so it definately stands out. The pockets are good and I dont have much wear. That all being said it as one or two downsides. Mainly its the spreading of the warmth. That is different everywhere on the body. Where a Therme Parka spreads that well and has same temps everywhere, with this coat it can be hot on the arms and cold on the chest or back. What does not help is that the zipper is barely insulated nor protected, so its warm everywhere except for the area on your front body behind the zipper. Especially with a lot of wind or on the bike it gets cold there and sweaty elsewhere. Another thing is that the insulation stops at height of the belt, so everything below that point is just the front fabric. All in all the coat is great around town on colder days without wind and I absoluty love wearing it on those days, but other days I pick other jackets.

In response to Eagle Eye: I see you are right. My sincere apologies. Unfortunately I cannot remove the review anymore. I am curious to hear if the new version is better when it comes to the cold behind the zipper. Mine has the zipper covered and even with cover it is chilly on the chest.

Great new updates.

The 2024 updated Monitor Down feels much lighter to the predecessor which I had for the past 7 years. It still has an oversize coat feel, but without the bulk. I had a small previously and purchased a small in the new one. The new relaxed shape allows for more space and layering without feeling too tight. Haven't worn it yet, so we shall see.

Monitor Down Coat Men's

The iconic Monitor Down Coat’s latest evolution adds a relaxed fit to its unyielding winter performance, distinctive silhouette, and fishtail hem. Our warmest Monitor, it’s insulated with 850 fill-power goose down and has a PFAS-free GORE-TEX ePE fabric for waterproof, breathable protection. A StormHood provides warmth and protection without impacting vision, and the long cut extends coverage. Storage is extensive, articulated patterning removes restriction, and the relaxed fit eases layering.

What's been updated: Updated with a relaxed fit for expanded layering options and a comfortable GORE-TEX ePE fabric that is PFAS-free.

Size and fit tips: We've heard that this model runs large. See the sizing chart to find your fit and size down if you’re between sizes or want a closer fit.

This product is free of intentionally added PFAS.

The new ePE membrane technology is lighter and thinner, but just as strong and durable as the materials we used before.   You may notice the face fabric “wetting out” slightly faster in products with ePE membranes, but rest assured this does not affect the waterproofing of the membrane itself. If you notice the fabric wetting out faster than you’d like, simply wash the jacket and dry it to remove the oil contamination and bring the DWR back to its full power.
