Best Field Bag for the Money!!

I got this bag as a warranty replacement for the previous model of the Bora AR 50 (which itself was a warranty replacement for the Arrakis 50! Thank you Arcteryx Warranty!!)). Remarkably, this one was $200 less than previous model, though it has a totally different construction. Before, the bag was made with an external layer that was a thick rip-stop nylon, which made it highly water resistant but a little heavier. The interior seam taping was what eventually started coming apart after 6 years of steady use. I think it was marketed for winter sports in snow, but I use it for botanical field work in mountains of Hawaii (= rain + lots of bushwacking and off-trail rambling). This new Bora is more of a "traditional" nylon construction, not nearly as water resistant, but also lighter and more adjustable. I've been using it for about 4 months now, one to several times a week and despite the material being lighter and thinner there is no obvious signs of wear. Hoping it will hold up as well as the last one. I really like how expandable it is with the dual drawstrings on the top of main compartment, how much slack there is on all the straps on main body of bag too, so I know I could really stuff and expand it wider if I wanted to. But by the same token its not overly big when I'm not carrying that much and everything cinches down nice and tight. I'm very happy with the extra storage options - long external ventral pocket with sealed zipper, hip-belt pockets, external side pockets (I expect these to tear out and rarely use them), and two top pockets on the "brain," as well as a water-resistant under pocket for things that can't get wet. And just like the other packs the hip belt and shoulder straps are nice and thick so it can really carry some weight without hurting your body when you need it too. Overall this is a great product with tons of functionality. I hope it lasts as well as the previous Arcteryx bags I've owned, and that they don't radically alter the design when I'm ready for my next replacement!! And especially for the price, I think this has to be one of the better values for your money, which you can't always say about Arcteryx prices...

Great Features

I’ve used this pack on a couple trips now and have nothing but good things to say about it. Although not the lightest pack on the market, the suspension system works great and allows for a comfortable carry all day. The best feature is the side access zipper, which opens into any part of the pack to grab a desired item without having to remove everything above it.

A good pack but with a design flaw

I’ve had to return this pack as the hip band had a serious failure, coming away from the pack. This was as a result of a slip and me landing on my backside and bottom of the pack, causing the waist band mechanism to fracture and break. Otherwise a good layout and design of the pack but having that happen mid a three day hike was a disaster.

I love using this pack as I have been exploring rucking in my training. I have rucked with 60 lbs for 60 min so far. I love the structure of the pack and adjustability. The back plate is light and feels substantial and sturdy. When I load my pack I feel like it distributes the weight well and I adjust with the straps to redistribute the loads. The shoulder straps on the top help me to get the load higher on my back or to loosen it to get more on my hips. Also the sturdy belt strap is on a mechanism that moves up and down. I found this acted as a shock absorber and didn't just dump the weight into my pelvis and back. The ability redistribute the load during the hike is key to avoid injury. You want different muscles and structures to do work so others can take a break. The design is great and allows me to effectively pack and access my stuff. The draw cord allowed my to fill it right to the top. Also the compartment that flaps over allowed me to access things that I needed more easily. The side zipper is also very useful to get larger items I needs quickly. I've rucked with 60 lbs and it felt comfortable supporting the load. I used clothes as my base and wrapped them around my kettlebells and dumbells in my pack. I also like how the straps around the back help me to compress the load to make it more compact to carry. I also got the tall version. I have a long torso and having a taller back helped me distribute the load more veritcially which made heavies loads feel more comfortable. I didn't feel like the load made me feel like I was going to tip side to side. It felt like it was a part of my body and my core could work well during my ruck. I have even used the pack for grocery shopping, taking supplies to work and on days out with my family. I carried an entire picnic and in my bag - from mats, foldable table, food and of course sports equipment to play with. We had to hike to our picnic site so it made it much easier to get to. I love this pack. This will definitely open up the possibilities for me and my family to enjoy nature.
