The only reason I give it a 4 and not a 5 is the lack of the belay (2 way zipper).
I’m 5’9”, 175 and the medium is a little long but that’s what I wanted for layering and skiing.
Ive been out in sideways rain and drizzle and it’s doing a great job of keeping my dry.

The one that gets it done.

This shell is an absolute tank. Despite my best efforts to destroy it over the past two ski seasons, it appears to be brand new. It functions in a few capacities for me:
1. Midwinter shell in my touring pack. While not breathable enough for uphill travel unless its seriously windy or stormy, the shell is perfect for descents, slower technical climbing with skis involved, and the sharp, tree-lined exits here in SW Montana. I've run nearly full speed into trees and rocks, and the shell shows... nothing. In the spring, I switch over to either the Alpha FL or even Squamish, but this is a perfect midwinter shell.
2. Resort use. I only ride chairs 3-4 days/year, so this is perfect for me. No need for a dedicated resort shell. If you are a frequent resort skier, you might want more features and comfort (powder skirt, neck liner), but this shell even has an arm pocket that functions as a pass holder. For me, at 5'7", the hem length is more than adequate to keep me dry.
3. Extreme weather layer when alpine climbing. On a typical day, I will hopefully not need it. But when I do, it's indispensable - the storm hood and general weather resistance can prevent a good day from becoming very uncomfortable.
I am normally a S, and am comfortably XS in this shell. This fit still allows for layering a base / mid and insulation under. For most folks on most days, this shell is likely overkill, but if you want to absolute best and most hardcore shell, look no further.

I got this jacket for the harshest of winter commutes. As a paraplegic if my equipment (my awesome Bowhead bike) fails then I better be prepared to stay out in the cold till help arrives. The flip side is that I also want equipment that will allow me full range of motion and the ability to shed or retain heat in the coldest of rides. Whether you’re in the city or on a mountain -35c is darn cold. This jacket is my first line of defence.

Really happy with this jacket!

I bought the Orca colourway and let me say, WOW. A great high performance jacket with some super style elements. This jacket has already been on a multi-day heli ski trip and has not disappointed. Its super durable and I dont feel like I need to worry about cutting the fabric while carrying my skis. Top marks.

I just picked up the Alpha SV jacket in the new Bordeaux color. Really loving this jacket! It provides great protection against snowstorms and high winds, which we have had a lot of this winter here in northern Nevada. The craftsmanship is timeless. I feel this jacket will last a lifetime and then some. The features are also what you would expect from Arcteyx. Pocket layout, zippers and seams, and the pull-tie designs to ensure a snug fit are all top shelf.
This jacket is well with the money! I'm 5-6 and 150lbs and it fits great. On a cold miserable day with temps in the teens, heavy snow, and winds 45+mph, I was feeling perfect with a base and mid layer. Loving this!

Replacing my 2012 Alpha SV Jacket

I just received the new jacket. My 2012 served me well and was a good investment. So far the fit is almost identical and I do like some of the upgrades on the newer model. The zippers pulls are nicer then before, but time will tell if they last. The jacket is much lighter and the construction is near perfection. I am looking forward to putting it through the tests on my upcoming trips.

Very Disappointed...

I purchased this jacket a year ago specifically because it was promoted as the most durable jacket and is still made in Vancouver. I purchased it directly from Arc'teryx's website so it is not an internet fake by any means and I still have the receipt. My use of the jacket has not been extreme by any measures yet two weeks ago while skiing in Ontario the armpit seam completely split open. I followed up on the warranty and the response time has been drastically slow. I eventually called in and was told that further photos are required and that they will likely try and repair it. I have still not heard back a confirmation on what next steps are. I was advised however, that this will take several weeks and I will likely not have the jacket for the remainder of the ski season. I have many Arc'teryx products and did not hesitate to pay premium for this specific item as my hopes were it would last many years given it is their most durable shell. It barely made it past one year and now I am having difficulty in getting the item replaced. Very unfortunate situation that I am hoping is rectified soon.

J'ai acheté cette veste en 2012 et après 11ans d'un usage intensif elle commence à montrer quelques signes "normaux" de fatigue. Je ne peux que dire ma satisfaction pour ce produit. Cette veste ne me quitte jamais comme un smartphone ou un porte-monnaie et je la glisse toujours au fond du sac à dos "au cas ou". Elle a toujours fait son boulot, soit me protéger des éléments (pluie, vent, froid, humidité) dans toutes mes pérégrinations que ce soit à la ville (un look parfait) ou que se soit en mer (évidemment, ca ne remplace pas un ciré), ou sur les sommets en randonnée ou en ski alpinisme. Si vous envisagez d'acquérir la veste Alpha SV , je ne peux que vous conseillé de bien choisir la couleur car vous la garderez longtemps !

merci pour ce commentaire qui confirme la robustesse des anciens modèles vs. les nouveaux.
Même histoire que vous, avec un modèle 2010 qui a duré 11 ans.
L'acquisition du dernier modèle m'a rendu sceptique sur la qualité, non de la membrane et de l'assemblage, tjs parfait... mais des serrages coheasive notamment qui paraissaient fragiles. De fait, les réglages ne restaient pas en place; ce qui est rapidement gênant en montagne.
A contrecœur, je me suis rabattu sur un modèle d'une autre marque qui est revenue sur l'utilisation de ces cordons peu fiables.
Si Arc'teryx revient un jour sur ces caractéristiques, aucun doute que je reprendrai une Alpha SV.

I had this jacket for a year already. The material is great and keeps you warm but the design is very poor. The pockets are centered in the middle so if you were to put your hands inside, you'll have to cross your arms, which I find unpractical.

Hey, you should have bought the Beta…
There is a reason the pockets on the Alpha are there… because the jacket is for climbing and a harness would otherwise cover the pockets.
If you don’t climb with a harness then get a beta.
The design is perfect for its intended use.

Not waterproof!!!

My Arcteryx Alpha SV is failing after less than 2 years of use, and with not so much use over that period of time... After some minutes of medium rain (of course, also with heavy one!), the jacket gets totally wet, and you can feel how the rain passes to the interior of the jacket...
I guide photography tours and workshops and having a group with you seeing how this item performs that bad, should be embarrassing for a brand like Arctertyx!
This is something totally unacceptable for the price of this item, so I want a solution with this!

Have you put water proofing back on assuming in 2 years you have had to wash? I have noticed water intrusion if I didn’t spray on DWR type product after proper cleaning. Once done I was all set again for the next storm.

I absolutely love my Arcteryx Alpha SV jacket! It is the perfect combination of function and style. The Gore-Tex Pro material is incredibly durable and keeps me dry in even the wettest conditions. The larger fit allows for easy layering underneath, and the adjustable hood provides excellent protection from the elements. The attention to detail in the construction of this jacket is second to none, and I know it will last me for years to come. Overall, I couldn't be happier with my purchase and highly recommend the Arcteryx Alpha SV jacket to anyone in need of a high-quality durable outdoor jacket for any activities.

cest moi 3e Alpha Sv je suis vendu ! il me suis partout ! Que je sois dans le ciel en paramoteur ou en camping ou bien randonné, il évacue bien l'humidité et très résistant !

Great fit for winter layers and puffy jackets underneath.
Superior waterproofness treatment of fabric-doesn’t wet out like lighter fabrics sometimes do.
Being made here in Vancouver, Canada is a big plus for me.

This jacket is amazing. It provides bulletproof protection in extreme wind, rain, and snow. The fit is comfortable alone or with layers. I have had the jacket for several weeks and expect it to last several years of hard service in the mountains.

Goretex pro delaminatoin and bad aftersales

Bought the Alpha SV 12 months ago, and after a weekend trip the layers in the hood started delaminating. Washed and dried it, now the whole jacket started delaminating. Sent it in almost 3 months ago, and after 1 month I was told I would get a new jacket. 9 emails and almost 3 months later I am still without a jacket. After sales is close to none exciting, you always have to nag to get a response. Thanks God I still have shell jackets from Norrøna and Rab, some of them over 12 years old- still performing great. This is my first apparel from Arc’teryx, a 800 dollar one- and it will definitely be the last.

‘Our most durable jacket’ is not so durable

3 years ago I bought this expensive jacket. It was a perfect fit and I really loved the protection it provided.
Although I took proper care and washed is with ‘grangers’ together with my other arcteryx goretex gear it started delaminating within the first year. As long as it kept me dry I didn’t bother too much. Then when I was allowed to travel again during covid I enjoyed the rain in Scotland. The jacket didn’t keep me dry.
The arcteryx service center in Switzerland said the product was in fair condition and they couldn’t repair the jacket. They did offer a 20% discount on a new jacket from their online store. They didn’t answer any of my questions, left mails unanswered for weeks until I mailed they could send the jacket back to me, then they responded the same day.
My conclusion: it’s not durable, not waterproof and arcteryx doesn’t expect the jacket to last more than 3 years even if you take it into the mountains only once and take proper care. The service provided by the repair center is dismal.
I just sent a mail to the store where I bought the jacket, maybe they are more reasonable.
I just hope my review provides potential buyers with some insight before they spend €800 on a jacket that may not keep you dry and is not so durable after all.

I have exactly the same problem
And same reply from arcteryx support : 20% less for my future purchase and they destroy my jacket.
Marketing is good, but after the sale, you really know how great is a company.

Fantastic coat

I finally goat this coat after looking at it for couple years. I am so glad I did. Went to mountains this past weekend and the coat is what kept me going. Wind speed was around 30 mph and just well above that. Once I reached the summit I never felt the wind cut through. I could feel wind push me but never once felt the cold of the wind..I left the pit vents open all 12 hours on the mountains. Tbis coat is what made the day possible with the cold and wind. I absolutely love the jacket. I did order up from normal to ensure plenty of room for layers and moving. I am 5'11" and 195 lbs.
Only con I noticed was the front hood adjusters would seem to slide and loosen up. Wish those were about tighter to avoid having to re-tighten the hood.
