“No jacket is fully waterproof“

This is. Used for hiking, around town and mountaineering. It does all these very well in conditions where it is not too warm and where it is expected to be tough. Perfectly sized for these activities too as comfortably enough room to layer underneath. Incredibly tough looking: I hiked the AT with this jacket and have done hundreds of miles more in the mountains and doesn’t look any different. Potentially for mountaineering/ ice climbing the pockets of the alpha would be more suitable but still performs fantastically. Looks great being worn around town too. I would say it is overkill for most scenarios if you wanted to get a cheaper jacket that would be fine and certainly on hikes where you would expect to have it in your bag more (I.e. summer) there would be options I would take instead to be lighter and more breathable but that isn’t really this jackets fault (you need more than one jacket if you want one to be perfect for every scenario) and it truly is a bomber which acts as an amazing weather protector
Q: Activity

Bought this jacket from retailer that offered price match...took £100 off the ticket price immediately. Still a high price but quality is clearly way above the competition. The fit is fantastic and love the way the collar has been designed. Tested once properly so far in a huge downpour whilst walking at pace....absolutely no problems at all. Going on four years now

Absolutely love my Beta AR. It's my daily driver and fits well, looks stylish, and is perfect for the rainy climate in which I live. I pair it with a small puffy as an underlayer during the winter and just the shell for the spring/summer. If I HAD to complain, it would be the collar that flattens after a couple of years... but honestly, it's not a big deal especially since it's been used extensively.

Sturdy jack(et) of all trades

This is a substantial jacket. The fabric feels thick in the hands and doubly so in some of the reinforced areas (the shoulders where a pack could cause abrasions). The DWR has held up for 2 winters now, I wear it often about 6 months out of the year. It is an excellent piece on top of a light sweater or thermal layer, but a bit too loose on my torso when paired with a t-shirt for example.
Q: Activity
A: Commuter jacket during heavy rainfall, hiking
Prossturdy, pockets, ventilation, adjustable, handles snow / rain / wind easily

Great shell for most conditions

I have been wearing the Beta AR now for about 3 months, and am thoroughly enjoying it. I was in the market for a hardshell for a while, and tested out a wide range of jackets. What I really like about the Beta AR is the lenght. I don't like it when a jacket is too long, and this one just fits well. The jacket is tough, and well constructed. The zippers work well and are robust, the hood can be very nicely adjusted so that you can keep looking left and right and your visuals are not blocked. On the downside, the goretex pro is a bit noisy. My kids keep saying, hey there's dad, you can hear him come from a mile away. I guess that's part of the fabric. The sleeves are also very long, something that i've seen with more jackets. With the sleeves being very long, it gives a bit of a bulky look for an overall perfect slim fitting jacket.

Durable Swiss army knife

I purchased this jacket 2 years ago as I wanted a durable hard-shell for outdoor activities in the schizophrenic New England coastal weather. After researching and trying on different options from Arc'tyrex, I settled on the Beta AR. The Gore-Tex Pro is the best gore-tex offered. A little stiff at first but allow some time to break it in and you'll appreciate it more! Athletic fit with enough room to allow for layering in colder temps. I've worn this jacket skiing in snowy western Maine in the middle of February, getting on and off chairlifts and holds up well. Works nicely for spring skiing with pit zips. Throw it on for riding single track in pine forests or transition from ski season to early spring rainy weather and still performs. Tough jacket and sheds rain/snow well. Excellent all rounder.
Q: Activity

All around is right

I bought this shell years ago on a stormy day in Colorado and haven't regretted it a minute since. Gore-tex does exactly what you expect from the fabric and the fit is just right for an athletic shell. Drop-hem is just right, and the hood sinches up or fits over a helmet just right. The stand alone collar is great for keeping driving wind off the face and neck without the hood. It's a bit trim on features but the trade-off is that the jacket packs very small. I roll the whole thing into the hood and have it in the bottom of my pack any time I might see precip. At 5'10", 180lbs a medium fits perfectly.
Q: Activity

Best rain jacket shell for urban and outdoors!

The Beta AR Jacket is the jack of all trades. It combines functionality, weather protection, and comfort altogether! When you decide to make the purchase for this product, you will not be disappointed by how perfectly it will fit your needs. Take it out for a light shower during your city commute, or take it outdoors to the wilderness where the elements are much tougher, and it will still stand the test. In my opinion, this is the best rain jacket you can buy. Heck ya, my friends!

If you’re only gonna have one hard shell jacket....

I’ve been doing outdoor things for four decade-plus, from Montana mountains in blizzard conditions to Noachian downpours in Amazonian rainforests and more. I require durable, effective waterproof gear to keep me dry, warm, and, ultimately, alive. The Arcteryx Beta AR is, in a nutshell, the one jacket I would get/have if I can have only one. It’s absolutely top-notch in waterproofing/rain resistance, with well-thought-out design and functionality from hood to hems, and well and truly durable—my current one just survived another wrestling match with a pack of dogs this morning. (Two Aussies, a Siberian Husky, Two Labs, and a German Shepherd Dog, if you’re curious.) I wear it fishing, climbing, backpacking, to the library, and even home for the holidays. I’m a tough sell—I didn’t buy it ‘cuz of the cutesy name and its alleged fashionability—I bought it when all others were found wanting. I was not compensated for this review, and the people at Arc’teryx don’t know who I am. But they know how to make a great shell jacket.
Q: Activity
A: Hiking/backpacking/climbing/birding/fishing

Excellent Alpine Shell

I have trusted Arcteryx products to keep me alive and warm for almost 8 years now and it's rare I write a review. I am 6'1" 180lbs with an average size torso to give a reference to the picture. Pros: I have worn the Jacket in the alpine about a dozen times now and it has treated me very well. I've had it on while climbing cracks and rubbing against chimneys and it has not shown any wear at all. Had four hours of heavy rain on an approach in RMNP and stayed completely dry. This is one of the lightest shells I've had that has the durability to handle several days of harsh alpine conditions. It packs down to about 1.5 liters when you tuck everything into the hood and smash it into a pack. The hood is easy to adjust over a around a helmet and not impede your vision at all. Overall awesome lightweight shell that I trust to do its job on heavier objectives. Cons: I would give the Beta AR 5 stars other than than the waist being to short. Not a big issue if you're not a climber. I had the jacket ride up and out from my AR-395 harness a couple times on an 8 pitch route with wind gusts around 50mph. Rapid loss of body heat every time this happened. Also if you are planning on using this shell to ski, I would recommend wearing bibs along with it.

Beta AR - Perfect West Coast all-arounder

Had the jacket for 3 months, and so far I have mainly used for dog walks, out in Victoria BC we see a significant amount rainfall this jacket has held up superbly to all weather conditions, and has kept me bone-dry by the end of our walks (up to 2-3 hours at time), and have found the pit zips perfect for venting while we lightly jog. I plan on using this for the ski season, mainly coastal PNW mountains, the fit is perfect for layering to stay warm on and off the hill. A lot of comments have been focused on the drop-hood but I like the look and design of it personally.

You won't find anything quite like it on the market.

The Beta AR was my first Arcteryx purchase seven years ago, and I couldn't find any issues with the build quality, durability, or performance of the jacket. It can be used as a shell in any (any) weather, from mist to driving sleet. I recently purchased an updated version and the new release on the hood drawstrings and zipper pulls are nice. If you want a shell jacket that will last you for a decade pull the trigger, you won't regret it.
