The piece that can do it all.

I purchased this piece two years ago, and have had the opportunity to test it thoroughly. I intended to use this as a mid layer for all of the climbing I did in the shoulder season and it became a staple piece. It is slightly longer in the arms and torso to ensure easy of climbing and for wearing a harness. Then the addition of the two chest pockets and helmet compatible hood mea it ideal for all the items I needed to quickly access or deal with the elements. The following summer season I then was able to test it on an eighteen day backpacking trip where it kept me warm, easy to find, and lightweight.

Versatile Piece for Indoors and Out

This is an extremely versatile piece that I use for indoors instructing and outdoor climbing and ski touring. As an indoor piece, it goes well over a shirt in a cool gym or even over a sweater if you're looking for a little extra protection when walking around on a cooler evening. It is a permeable piece so don't go expecting it to be a solid piece for strong winds or very cold nights. Insulation is not lofty so I'm not wearing this over a shirt or base layer when its close to 0c or colder. As an outdoor piece, it sits as a mid-layer over my base and is the hood is perfect for slipping under the helmet. Perfect whilst in motion on the splitboard. When stationary or belaying, I throw a down jacket over the top and layers well. It is a fitted piece, so having a thick fleece or sweater underneath can feel bulky. I'm thinking of getting another and upsizing for dry days where I can throw a thicker fleece underneath and rain/snow isn't a factor. The drop hem sits well under the harness and protects the back from being exposed to any cold wind coming up. I am 173cm, 70kgs and a Small fits perfect as a mid-layer. I'd go up if wanting to use something thicker underneath. Chest pockets are fantastic to keep the clif bars from turning into bricks and handpockets are great for a bit of protection on a windy day. The inside fleece is warm, and soft, comfortable against the skin. can be a bit grippy against the wool base layers but it is expected. Outside is durable and I haven't snagged it on any alberta limestone yet. Overall, great, practical piece that just goes with me everywhere. Dynasty colour can show dirt and grime quite easily.

Not what I was expecting!

The new practitioner AR is not as the old version, who look like the Proton and the Atom, one of my coworker own one. This new version is a fleece with a nice shell. When I opened the package I was a little disappointed, I read the reviews and the descriptions, but I did understand what was the insulation. But I'm super happy so far, this jacket is warm, evacuate the humidity quickly, little waterproof, dry quickly, wind stopper just enough and sturdy but soft! I'm super stocked with this insulated jacket but I might buy a proton later!

A new paradigm

I have two of these. One issued by my SAR team, and another I bought so I can keep the other in its SAR pack ready for missions. It’s such a great piece that I found myself reaching for it all the time, especially morning rides to the gym. It’s about five miles downhill to the gym from my house, and mornings never get out of the forties (F) where I live. That’s a long, brisk roll without much exertion where the windproofness of this jacket does well, and when pedaling hard on flats (and one slight uphill) the breathability is enough to keep me comfortable and dry. No other jacket can do that. Bonus: the octaloft offers warmth without compressible loft, so I don’t fret about leaving it tucked away in my SAR bag like I would a synthetic insulated item. Fit: Luckily, Arc’teryx fits like it was tailored for me and thank goodness for that because I’ve noticed a trend toward built-in beer-bellies in other formerly favorite brands, which leads to draftiness. So, sizing is dead-on if your fitness leans toward the type where running around in the mountains all day lifting heavy things with friends and carrying those things a long way feels pretty normal.

Perfect !

This is the second jacket I purchase, excellent softness and fit, exceptional balance between warmth and breathability. Great wind protection and a well-designed hood for working at heights. Unfortunately, I ordered the same size as the first jacket but in a different color (orange), and it turned out to be a size larger, which is a shame. I didn't ask for a replacement because I used it as soon as it arrived and packed it in my backpack. Excellent product.

Mostly What I Expected

I have several Arcteryx jackets, but was especially excited about this one. I've never had a Jacket with Octa Loft insulation before. In fact I have no experience with anything like it. To put it simply, its awesome! It's warm for its weight and Highly breathable. Creating an insulation piece with such impressive air permeability while still being warm and providing reasonable protection from the wind is not easy to do. Arcteryx has pulled it off. In addition to this, its relatively light weight and very durable! Again...not easy to do. It is not as fitted as I would have suspected by the description Arcteryx provides. This isn't necessarily a bad thing. While it's not what I would describe as fitted, it's not at all loose or baggy. It has just enough room for a base layer and mid-weight fleece, but can easily be worn without layers too. I am 190lbs, 6'2" tall...if that helps for sizing. Lastly...the appearance of the Jacket is impressive. While it's not a top priority for me, I do appreciate it when my clothing looks good. It is definitely in its element on the climb, but doesn't look out of place at the pub later in the day. Overall, I really like this jacket. I'll likely be trading in my Atom as it has become an unnecessary piece as a result. One con...this jacket has a very weird crinkly fabric on the hem...drives me nuts as I can hear it whenever I move.

Perfect for life in Denmark!

I got this jacket a couple of weeks ago, and I am so happy I did. Have only used it for regular stuff like walks and biking, but the breathability really shines through even in those conditions. The fit is tight around the chest and neck, making it hard to layer up with thick layers underneath. For my use however as a spring/autumn jacket it is lovely! I just toss it over a t-shirt or a merino long sleeve if it's colder, and I'm perfectly comfortable. Takes on lighter showers like a boss. Build quality seems tough and sturdy, should last many years, especially since it has no glued on pocket. Overall a very good jacket, but don't expect it to fit or feel like an atom. It is similar to the Proton with Octaloft, but made with a tougher face fabric.

Excellent jacket, absolutely love it!

I bought this a few months ago and have zero regrets! Love the roomy pockets (4) and much warmer than I anticipated. Warmer than my Atom LT for sure and is a great piece for every day use and milder temperatures by itself when in the mountains. Usually have it layered under my Beta AR with zero issues whatsoever. I purchased an XL, I’m 6’2, 235lbs and I wear an XL for all my stuff. Definitely fits true to size.

good jacket

Versatile layer, too warm for touring most of the time (unless it's guide pace) and not a true puffy (insulation is a luffa? type fabric not like typical synthetic insulation) but it's great to throw on before hitting a windy ridge or summit, great skiing jacket in mild temps. Turns precipitation pretty good. This is sorta replacing my hardshell, if it's stormy, cold, wet, etc. I throw this in the pack.

Great Jacket - Features

I've had this jacket for a month and wear it everyday. It's perfect for the up and down weather of the Atlantic Provinces. I wear it in the bush, on light trail runs, walking the dog early morning, and sometimes to work. I can fit a vest underneath or/instead add a shell. Pretty flexible. I'll wear it up north (Yukon, NWT, Alaskas) where I guide two week wilderness river expeditions in remote areas. It will be perfect on a windy cool day on a raft or in camp or to put on during a hike in alpine areas. The two chest pockets and lower hand pockets are a great feature. I need pockets for all sorts of odds and ends especially when guiding up north. Chest pocket are great size and expand if you want to shove gloves/mitts and hat in one, a phone, or other location device in the other. The interior fabric is cozy. I will often wear a short sleeve shirt and the jacket and again, the fabric is very nice. The outer layer is weather resistant in a light rain but it's purpose is not as a rain jacket/ shell like the other items. It's also quite different and unique to the Atom Lt which offers some insulation. I see it as in between but think it will end up being my go to jacket. Last thing, the hood is great.
