FITTING A CLIMBING HARNESS

Men’s climbing harnesses should fit over the hip bone. You should not be able to pull it down. The adjustable leg loops on your climbing gear should be comfortable and not super tight. Alpine climbing harnesses need to go over more robust winter clothing so be sure to accommodate for that. If you need help making sure you’re getting the right fit for your harness, visit your nearest Arc’teryx store and talk to a product expert.

SPORT CLIMBING HARNESSES VERSUS FULL BODY

Sport climbing harnesses are used instead for multiple reasons. The most obvious being weight. The next being bulk. Whether sport climbing, alpine climbing, or trad climbing, a more packable harness is always preferrable. As for practicality, the range of motion and freedom of movement with a sport climbing harness are way better.

CAN MEN WEAR WOMEN’S CLIMBING HARNESSES?

Yes. Climbing harnesses are essentially unisex, but it’s a better idea to shop within your gender as we’ve done most of the hard work for you. Women’s harnesses usually have smaller waist belts and larger adjustable leg loops. Men’s harnesses often have longer measurements between the waist and leg loops. Regardless, try a harness on to see what works for you.
