Ever reliable

There is simply no other product out there that will keep DRY in harsh conditions. Previously owned an Alpha AR; the SV is a bit more compact and holds up to similar conditions. I don't care how cold and wet my mountain adventures are; if I can stay dry, all is well. This is the jacket to do that.

Amazing Jacket - Perfect Fit

This is an absolutely amazing shell jacket. I tried on a million shell jackets and none of them compare to the Alpha. It is close to the body for activities, but has a lot of room in the shoulders for freedom of movement. The storm hood makes you feel extra protected from the rain. Great for activities and running around in the rain all day.

THE PERFECT JACKET

I’m a climber and this jacket just has everything I was looking for! I’m very picky and read a bunch of reviews before buying anything, so I did the same with this jacket and...this is definitely the best jacket I ever bought! At first I was hesitant because it’s expensive, but so far this is one of the best products I own; I would rather spend on this jacket, that buy a new one every couple of years. It’s super lightweight and comfortable, you get awesome mobility (either you’re climbing, mountaineering, or just hiking), it’s 100% waterproof and at the same time very breathable, I’ve been using with layers at a -40°C temperature, and it works wonderfully, it has enough space for layering. It’s extremely well built and definitely makes honor to it’s name (Alpha Severe Conditions)! I’m 1.65 cms and bought size small, fits perfect! Bravo Arc'teryx!!

Unfortunately, I don't think your team intervenes on the expedition grounds. A piece of temporary tape is sometimes necessary and too bad it cancels the guarantee according to your rules. This is Julia’s response to Arcteryx. There’s a theme: customer service, product durability/reliability are low, while price is very high. Sad. I will replace my jacket with another brand if arcteryx doesn’t stand behind their product. It’s good in a lot of ways, but falling apart at the seams - even after a few years - is ridiculous.

Goofy pockets

What is with the goofy pocket location? I received my Alpha SV jacket late in the season so used it once for Alpine skiing (never needing the pockets) then grabbed it one day to go for a walk. It got cool so I went to put my hands in the pockets....and you can't do it...short of crossing your arms in front of your body. Not so comfortable. I realize this jacket is designed for technicality in mind, but how do you screw up putting pockets in a functional spot. This was a (very expensive) gift, otherwise I would have tried to return it.

Thanks for taking the time to share your valuable feedback with us. The Alpha SV has been designed for mountaineering and climbing. The pockets are located around the chest area so it is possible for the user to access them while wearing a harness. This is also why the jacket has a wider shoulder area for freedom of movement and shorter front length to accommodate harnesses without having any extra fabric at the front. All those features have been carefully designed for alpinism activities. Kindly,

It would be very nice if that detailed description of why the pockets are where they are was included in the jacket general description. I will spare you the discussion of what happens to your center of gravity when your arm crosses in front of your body.

19 Years With My Alpha SV!!!

I purchased my Alpha SV Jacket in two-toned Too Blue back in March of 2000. We're coming up on 19 years together, and I still absolutely love it. This jacket saw me through a dozen straight years of tough winter weather in high-country Colorado with 2-3x/week skiing all season; 7 years of monsoon storms with blowing dust, strong winds and heavy rain in Arizona; many hikes; and more basic daily activities than I can count (going running, errands, etc). I have other jackets, but this one is my #1 favorite. It has held up AMAZINGLY well. I've fallen skiing many times, sometimes sliding on snow, ice, and rock, and also caught the edges of my skis - no rips or tears! Incredible abrasion-resistance. The cross-body pockets on the front are the best for riding lifts...no awkward bending to get into a hip pocket, plus I don't accidentally pull out everything I've got stored in there. Super-handy for when I'm out on a run as well. And they're big pockets! Easily fit snacks, phone, map, etc. Secure inside pockets are also perfect for smaller items. The pit zips are a lifesaver for when you're starting to overheat. For years, I carried my diamond stone in the sleeve pocket. It was so easy to access when I wanted to quickly take off a burr. The adjustment points all over the jacket are well thought-out and provide a fantastic customized fit. Mine has a waist cinch adjustment inside the pockets, although I don't know if that's a current feature (I sure do like it). The hood works awesome both with and without a helmet. It's also handy for storage! The Alpha SV travels really nicely, as I can lay it out flat, fold in the sleeves, fold in the sides, and roll it up into the hood. It's very compact, and stows well under my backpack bungees this way. Side note, it's very comfortable to wear with a backpack - no chafing. Super light-weight to tie around your waist; just double-tie the arms in front. I am 5'6" 130lbs with broad shoulders, and have a size medium - not sure if sizing has changed from 19 years ago, so your experience may vary. I've usually got a base layer or two under it (Arc'teryx, please bring back the Delta Shearling Fleece - one of your best!), although it's also a nice fit over just a tank top when I need a waterproof jacket during a summer monsoon storm in 100*F heat. Cleaning has been really easy: washer (front-loader), dryer, and good to go. It's always washed up very nice and clean. Maintenance-wise, about 5 years ago, I had some of the interior seams re-taped and re-sealed, and am re-doing some of them again now. I've re-waterproofed it maybe half a dozen times as well. As phenomenal as it's been, I'm considering the purchase of a new Alpha SV in the next year or two, just so I can re-set the clock on my gear. I'm not thrilled with the current color choices of orange, lime or basic blue (mine is a gorgeous dark purple/blue) - where is the neutral black or grey? - so I'll hold off as long as I can. In summary, this jacket has been worth every penny I paid for it, and then some. Arc'teryx, thank you for a brilliant product.

Where is the black, grey, etc colours for women?

Why is it that, as a woman, I cannot replace my Arcteryx SV jacket in the colour black, just as the men are able to? I cannot believe that there is not a demand for this colour after several years of only offering women yellow, orange and blue. I have bought several Arcteryx jackets over the years and the Alpha SV is the only jacket which provides me with severe weather protection together with the lightest weight. I shall not purchase any other jacket until I replace my Alpha SV.

No one likes looking like a traffic cone Arctery'x! Orange once again in the Fall/Winter 2019 line up. And why do the men get 5 colour selections versus 3 for the women?? I would have loved to get the Alpha SV in that fantastic dark forest green Labryrinth colour. Maybe for Spring 2020? Fingers crossed for a better colour line up when I need to replace mine as well.

Where have you been all my life?

So I've wanted this shell for a long long time, but the price....yikes! I own just about every jacket ArcT makes in the various "layering" system, minus this bombproof outer layer. Finally snagged one, in the mirage colorway(is it purple or is it brown...I dig it!) and my first outing with it my only thought was "Where have you been all my life?!" It seriously is THAT AWESOME! The fit is classic ArcT perfection, their 3D gender patterned styling is genius! How can this slightly bigger for layering outer most durably "thick" crinkly layer fit so great, even when worn alone like a rain jacket?! The hood adjustment tabs remember where you had them adjusted and switch to that fit in a simple pull of the strings. The wrist velcro fits perfect everytime, over or under gloves. The zippers slide easy, the chest pockets are gusseted to haul extra gear yet sit flat when empty. The internal pockets are there when you need them and worry free when you don't. I like that one is zippered and one is a larger slip pocket also, not everything is same sized here, just like the gear you haul sometimes. This jacket is just bombproof, you put it on and feel like you've got your own microclimate that can take on anything. Like a suit of armor. It's one that you'll be glad you had with you, time and time again. This hardshell is a bit noisy, but that's the nature of hardshells and you need to know that going in. That's the sound of "protection and druability", so it's oddly reassuring. Also price. But then when you look at the craftsmanship, you know why. Expertly applied seam tape. Perfectly lined up stitching. Features that just make sense and are easy to use. You'll have this thing for years vs the cheap guys, which in the long run, isn't so cheap anyways. Get the best and get out there. There is no bad weather, just bad gear. ArcT won't let you down. Do it!

Great all around shell

I was in the market for a new all around shell. I live in Southern California but get cold easily. I wanted a light shell for hiking in the colder months, both on the coast and in the mountains. I also wanted an excellent, wind and water proof jacket to wear skiing. Finally, I wanted bright color. I tried several of the different Arcteryx's shells and this is the one I decided on. I love it, even though I which the pockets were lower and a bit larger.

Great jacket, only one flaw in perfection

Great jacket, been using it while hiking, nordic skiing and overall outdoor activities. Actually only jacket I'm being using since I bought it. Hem length is long enough to cover lower back and same with sleeves; they really cover wrists even while moving. Only thing I don't like is hood adjusters directly in the front. Even if you pull them down to tighten your hood, they get loose immediately. Like they don't hold at all. Back hood adjusters works just fine, they hold until you release them and you can really adjust the hood to fit your hat/head. I have to add some kind of quick-release locks to elastic bands in the hood because now wind blows snow inside to the hood.

Functional, Durable, and Fashionable

Purchased Raku XS and I absolutely love this jacket. It was between this and the Beta or Theta AR however this ultimately won me over as it is best rated for alpine climbing. It is breathable, lightweight, abrasion resistant and has enough features to make it look good either cinched in and worn alone on rainy days or on top of my Atom LT Hoody for mountaineering. I am 4'11, 95 pounds usually wear XXS-XS in most sizes. This XS works pretty well for me because you can adjust the waist, hems, and hood to accommodate for a slimmer fit. Although it's a pricey piece, you don't want to skimp when it comes to comfort, weight, and warmth. This piece will do it all for you!
