Updated version 2020

This is the new version with the new slimmer fit. I have lots of arcteryx jackets and shirts so o am familiar with how each category fits. I’m an XL in everything. This is the most snug jacket I have from them. It was obviously designed to fit over a tee shirt or light fleece. Anything more will be restricting. Even the fleece makes it tight across the back. I wanted a windbreaker to fit like this however. I didn’t think something like this should be put over layers much. I mean a lightweight atom has the same face fabric almost so why layer this over that? If you do want to layer it size up. Quality is excellent labyrinth color is awesome. Third item I bought in that color.

Fine product!

It's another perfect durable top quality product adding my gears, adding more Arc'teryx. Comfortable, lightweight hoody I can use as wind breaker, good in light rain, and for sure my trail run. The hoody has brim and has cord at the back. It's great for my walk or hike. Draw cords on both sides are perfect for my harness when I do light climbing so the shell won't ride up. This Squamish model is great for general purpose all around I can say. Good for cycling and MTB too. I'm pleased with my decision going for this product.

I had an original Squamish Hoody and needed to replace it (so many holes and a broken zipper). I posted a question here and based on the answers purchased the newest version (2020). I'm disappointed. But first, some of the good stuff: The Tyono fabric is awesome. Most of the recent Squamish Hoodies have this fabric, but it is definitely an upgrade from the original (Gossamera). The zipper is great (it has the new "stops" to keep it from unzipping and blowing open) and the zipper pull (a rubberized plastic) is better than the old cord zipper pull. A huge improvement is the design of the hem draw cord which keeps the cord tucked up into the jacket and will no longer get snag on carabiners on my harness (thank you ARC'TERYX!). I'm neutral about the new cuff design - they've done away with velcro which simplifies things but removes a lot of adjustability - especially when it comes to getting the jacket on and off over gloves and pushing it up on your forearms. But there are two major changes that I strongly dislike. The first is the cut of the jacket. It is now much more trim - it is actually OK in the body, but it is absolutely too tight in the arms now. The great thing about the Squamish is that it could be worn as a shell over an Atom LT, a Cerium SL, or even a Cerium LT. My default kit for climbing in cold, dry conditions was a Cerium and Squamish. The Squamish could be worn alone when conditions were mild or over the Cerium to protect it when it got really cold. The new cut of the sleeves makes it impossible to put one of these layers on under the jacket - it is just too tight. I don't understand why ARC'TERYX has turned a climbing shell into a running shell. This cut is great with a t-shirt or long-sleeve t-shirt, but anything heavier and it doesn't work. The second change that is a bummer is the pocket is much smaller. This makes stuffing the jacket much more tedious AND you can't put anything else in the pocket when the jacket is stuffed like phone, hat, energy bar. With the older version I climbed with the jacket stuffed and clipped to the back of my harness, and I could also put these items in the pocket while the jacket was stuffed. Now there is no room in the pocket for anything but the jacket itself and it takes extra effort to get the zipper closed on the pocket making the task tedious and slow - something I don't want when climbing. I will grant that the new pocket allows for a more compact package and some will like this, but I hate it.

Great windshell

I’m one of those people who, if they’re moving they’re almost always warm and over-heating more often than they’d like. Because of that I wanted something that helps me shed heat while keeping the wind out when I stop moving. The Squamish is better at that than anything else I’ve worn! First, it’s really light - as others have said, it’s easy to forget you’re wearing it. It’s so light that with my Trail Blaze (orange) one, you can see the clout of darker T-shirts through it, even my medium green one. That might be enough to make you re-think your colour choice but not the jacket! Secondly it packs small - it packs into its own chest pocket with plenty of space (I think you could potentially get a second in there). Packed, the pocket is about 6” x 6” but you can squash it to about 2 tennis balls. This lives permanently in my backpack now., just in case!

Packable jacket to take off the edge

This jacket is great. I always struggled with summer days where the morning is still chilly. Taking a jacket could be such a burden. This is ideal on my commute or on hikes as you can get your body temperature up, and then just throw it in your bag. So light that you won't notice it. For me, it has a perfect balance between breathability and wind breaking abilities. I tend to heat up quickly, and this jacket doesn't suffocate. A true must-have.

Best Hoody

This is the best windbreaker I could imagine! I use it for mountain biking, back packing, mountaineering and sailing in Southern California. Really breathable when you have high intensity exercise and and worm and soft at the same time. In combination with light puff or fleece this is great winter jacket for sunny winter accents. I bring this jacket on every trip now

Very light and trim, compressed well, wind resistant

Excellent breathability under exertion. Water resistant but not water proof (likely why it breathes so well). Doesn’t fee super durable so I treat it gently and with care, so I haven’t tested Arc’teryx’s claim for durability. It does wad up very small and shakes out time and again, so durability hold up there. Zipper slips down when jacket collar is pulled on. Common problem with Arc’teryx jackets. Not a big deal but a minor gripe, especially when moving fast in windy conditions and it gaps open. Paired with a vest, this shell is an excellent climbing, hiking, and running combo on chilly days.

Awesome Jacket

After trying to decide between a few light, packable jackets I decided on the Squamish Hoody. It has come with me on every trail run and hike I have gone on this summer because Colorado weather is so unpredictable and it has not failed me so far! From chilly early morning to high alpine rain storms, this light little jacket has done awesome for me. I am also super happy with the fit, slightly slim and nice, and the color I got was the orange and its amazing <3 Cant wait to keep growing my Arc'teryx collection

Didn’t think I would wear it so much

I have the gamma, Squamish, and sigma(useto) and I wear the Squamish way more then any other soft shell. I have dragged over rocks and slid down hills in it expecting it to be shredded, but it remains in great shape.. it breathes well and it’s also decently warm and knocks the wind down as intended.. it’ll shed some light rain but soaked through if it really pours. On good weather days it comes with me as my only extra layer But it’s difficult to pack it when I’m going fast and light in alpine conditions when I’m bringing a hard shell and an insulated jacket.. it has replaced a fleece/thicker base layer a few times on these trips.. love the jacket.. comes on my longer runs too in cooler temps

Small Greatness

I've got the squamish now for a few years. The jacket is super thin and at first I was worried that the jacket wouldn't last very long, but it keeps on going. Love how small you can pack it, within it's own pocket. I almost always carry this on summer evenings, leaving the house in a t-shirt and on my way back I can put this on to protect me against the cold night/evening breeze. Not much else to say about the jacket. It works great, fits great = is great

I suggest this jacket if you bike around March-April or September October. You never know when the wind will start. This jacket isolates the wind and you never feel cold. The best part is you never feel hot either. You just feel how it suppose to be. When it is too hot, I pack it to my jersey pocket. It gets that small.

Versatility

This is by far the most versatile piece of Arcteryx clothing I own. I use this all season - from the skin track in winter to spring & fall MTB riding, summer hiking and even the office. The fit is superb (6ft, 170lbs, size medium) to wear with just a t-shirt, light fleece (Patagonia R1) or Atom LT vest. I love this jacket so much I bought 3 - orange & blue for outdoors adventures and dark gray for the office.

A nearly perfect wind jacket

Those who have read my reviews before know that I seem to have an obsession with finding the "perfect" jacket. In fact, I have probably reviewed more jackets than any other type of clothing. I've been wanting to try this jacket out for some time, and when my REI dividend showed up, I took the bait. With wind shells, there tends to be a tradeoff between wind-resistance and breathability. The more wind resistant a jacket is, the more likely you are to heat up on the inside. I hike pretty warm, so am willing to trade some wind resistance for better ventilation. This jacket strikes a nice balance, but leans a little more towards breathability. I found that I could wear it much longer on a hike or bike ride, than other wind-shells I have tried. Cranking up the steep Lake Vernon Trail in Yosemite, it was quite a while before I felt the need to take it off. I read a few older reviews of this jacket, complaining about the DWR. I found the water repellency to be what I would expect for this type of shell. Light rain beads up nicely, though it wets out quickly in the heavy stuff. The fabric dries out quickly when it does get wet. The fit is roomy, with plenty of space for layering. I found I could wear it over a base layer and light puffy, and not feel like it was tight. The sleeve cuffs are adjustable via die-cut velcro tabs, and there is a single adjustable shock cord waist-gasket, for when you need to batten down the hatches. The cut is long enough that scrambling over boulders or blowdown trees you are still getting good coverage. Previous reviews I saw complained about a lack of adjustability of the hood. This has been changed with a toggled drawcord on the back of the hood. I found it easy to get it where I wanted it, and it stayed there. Nice touch... there is a super soft micro-suede patch on the inside front of the hood, so you don't have nylon brushing against your forehead. The jacket packs down nicely into the single roomy chest pocket, and at 5.5 ounces, won't take up much room in your pack. The 30d nylon fabric is wispy light, but never feels insignificant. The construction is Arc'teryx typical first rate, and I expect that this jacket will last for several years. I have used this jacket on windy road-bike rides, on many Sierra, Cascade, and foothill hikes, and just around town, and find myself reaching for this shell first.
Q: Activity
A: Hiking, cycling

Perfect grab and go layer!

I have only been using this jacket for just beyond a month now and I have nothing but great things to say about it. Super light layer that does a great job of blocking out moderately high winds and surprisingly does quite well with a good amount of rainfall. My only gripe would be the zipper - I’m not sure if it’s normal behaviour but mine likes to unzip just by pressure from my layer underneath. The Squamish comes in some great colours - my favourite being Flare!

Perfect jacket for many activities where the weather cool but not crazy cold. The jacket packs into its own pocket to a size of a fist. Blocks out wind and allows breathing too. I like it so much that I own two.
