Great for everything and even better customer service

I’m a 15 year old boy and wanted the same jacket as my dad forever and finally got it. I use it all the time. Skiing everywhere every week in the season, down pours in Vietnam, cold backpacking trips, and even just a bad weather day playing Soccer’s And going to school. It is great with layer too. The best part was that when I Ripped my jacket from skiing backwards and crashing into a sharp rock on my spine (which rarely happens to most smart people) after a long ER visit we sent them the jacket back and they repaired the whole piece in the back also asking about the colors and any logo changes wanted which was super cool. Basically for the rest of my life I have committed to them and all my life savings with it.

Too short up front

Bought this jacket based on so many positive reviews but very quickly was met with sore disappointment at how short this jacket is up front. I have many mid-layers and all but 2 protrude from the bottom of the front of this jacket .... by less than 1". Seriously!? The front of the BETA AR is cut in a weird way that won't cover mid-layer products at the front of the jacket because it's cut and sewn short. The weirdest part is I tried the same jacket - a different L in store and it seemed longer up front but the jacket was much larger in the armpit area. Who cuts the material before the jackets are sewn!!??? The one I brought home was just right, but was shorter at the zipper. Go figure. Nice looking jacket, would be my new go-to jacket for back-country and city outings, but the high cut front is a real shame and a deal-breaker!!! Set my sights on this jacket after a lot of research and reading - won't be wearing it and can't recommend it either, back it goes and back to the drawing board for me. Arc'teryx folks, if you're reading this - make the front 1" lower and leave the back as it is, add a pocket in the sleeve, make the inside pocket larger and you'd have a SOLID winner. Current (2017/2018) colour combinations are great, BTW.

The Ultimate Do-It-All

As per the title, the Beta AR is truly the ultimate do-it-all shell. While tailoring to different conditions requires the work of multiple layers working as a system, I have used my Beta for everything from backcountry snowboarding to mountain biking. The n40 goretex works and breathes great, and the n80 in key areas definitely helps the durability of the jacket. I have had mine pressed and rubbed against rough rock walls, taken it through thick evergreen brush, and it has even been through one mountain bike crash (luckily surviving). The goretex hold up well and maintains it's abilities as long as you wash the jacket regularly. I try to run a tech wash at least twice a season - in mid season if the jacket is dirty and once at the end to reset for next season's activities. Any mud, dirt, or sweat accumulated on the jacket through heavy use has always come out without issue. As for sizing, I am 5'11", 160lbs, and use a medium. It sits hip length. Because of my slim build, I tend to have a bit of excess jacket in the chest and sleeves, which makes layering not an issue. My only qualm is that the internal stash pocket is a touch small, and does not have an opening for headphone wires. I can not see why this would be, as the internal pocket need not be waterproof. In my opinion, it would be a good feature to add, especially as I often use headphones to make and receive calls while cycling/walking to commute in this jacket. Overall, this is a superb jacket that will handle anything you throw at it well enough. Great as a starting piece from Arc!

The Hype is Real

So, here is my review. After having done many hours of research, I decided to go with the Beta AR. I measure 6 foot 3 inches, 220 lbs, athletic build and a size Large fit perfect. It allowed for layering without feeling constrictive. I live in Montreal and winters here tend to be very unpredictable. If its not the cold that gets you, the wind definitely will. Here are some field tests that I did: All test were done with a cotton base layer, an Atom LT midlayer and the Beta AR on top. 1) At -2 Celcius, with light winds, 40 mins slow paced walk: No heat loss. My core was nice and toasty without ever feeling overheated. Wind did not stand a chance. Drop hood was not used. I could have walked another 3 hours without issues. 2) At -10 Celcius with light/medium winds, 40 mins slow paced walk: Again, no heat loss. Nice and toasty. No wind penetration. Drop hood was not used. I felt comfortable to continue walking longer if needed. 3) At -13 Celcius with medium to heavy winds, 15 mins slow paced walk: Minor heat loss. I found myself requiring to move just a bit more so that my core temp would go up and I would feel comfortable (meaning that I went from a slow lazy Sunday swagger to a New York I am 5 minutes late to my first job brisk walk). This time, I used the drop hood, and let me tell you, this thing is FANTASTIC. It is very highly adjustable, which I loved. Wind stood no chance! With my normal winter coats, winds like this would make me want to seek shelter after only being exposed to it for a minute because it would instantly rob me of heat. With the Beta AR on I felt invincible. Granted you need to move just a bit more to get your core heated, but still, this was something else ! Overall, the jacket performed amazingly well. If I had a thicker mid layer (the Atom AR for example) I believe no heat loss would have occurred. Taking advantage of these heavy winds, I decided to fill up a full tank of gas. As I stood there for 4 mins, pumping gas into my car, the winds were howling all around me. I glanced over to the other drivers who also happened to be filling up their tanks and they were in AGONY because of the biting frost hitting their non windproof jackets. I could not believe it. I had no issues. Arc'teryx beat Mother nature. It was an incredible experience ! TL;DR: Buy it, it is worth it.

Solid Jacket

3 years with the Beta AR now, it replaced a Arc'teryx paclite shell from 8/10 years ago, Arc'teryx customer service is amazing. I had an issue with the old paclite jacket and was able to upgrade to the Beta AR by paying only the difference between the two. Use the Beta for everything from skiing in NM, fly fishing on the gulf coast, commercial landscape work etc. It's a wonderful piece of gear, the "AR" in my case truly means "all around". It's the go to, everything everyday shell and takes a beating. Broke a couple teeth off the main zipper last summer and Arc'teryx fixed/replaced the zipper but also repaired a couple little tears in one of the arms that I did not even mention to them, again excellent customer service!

Seams and seals are weak

After having had 3 outdoor jackets (from TNF, Patagonia and Berghaus) in the past which all lasted 10+ years. I decided to step up in price a little and buy an BETA AR. I'm sad to say that it turned out to be a great disappointment. After about 1,5 years the loop for hanging up the jacket came off. Soon after that a number of taped seals started to come off which I glued back with seamgrip. After about 2,5-3 years in the seams around both cuffs and the seems holding elastic cord at the bottom of jacket started coming loose. Now after 3,5 years, the only issue I don't directly fault Arc'teryx for, the zipper has died. I would not recommend this jacket to anyone.

Looks Like A Winner!

I purchase this jacket to replace my 1997 Marmot Mountain Lightweight Jacket that was simply getting old. So far this jacket has proven itself worth the investment. It provides excellent protection from the elements, has a good hood design, and is much lighter that my previous jacket. I am currently living and trekking in Nepal and I look forward to putting this jacket through it's paces for the next few years. My only gripe thus far is the lack of elastic in the wrist cuffs. The jacket requires loosening the velcro straps when putting it on or taking it off and I wonder how long the velcro will last. This is a minor detail and may not be an issue if the velcro holds out.

Amazing Shell

I live in northern Canada for most of the year and I recently bought my Beta AR for its versatility. It has easily out-performed all of my previous shell jackets and I could not be happier with my purchase. It really cuts the biting wind and repels all kinds of nasty weather. Rain just beads off and it always keeps me dry and comfortable. As an outer shell over a down jacket it has kept me warm and cozy in below freezing temperatures. I love the cut and shape of the jacket, and the fabric is very strong. One critique is that when wearing my backpack, the front pocket zipper dongles sit directly under my shoulder and sternum straps. It can be slightly awkward to access the pockets, however, this is only a minor nuisance and does not happen with my friend's Beta AR and backpack. Nonetheless, I absolutely love my Beta AR jacket, and Arc'teryx customer service is amazing.

Good Jacket

I'm a 6'3, 230 lb broad shouldered ex athlete (have an XL, generally a XXL in most other jacket/sweatshirts) and I like the length of the jacket compared to other Patagonia shells I had that stopped short near the waistline/butt. It has got good articulated shoulders and hood that allow mobility while casting a fly/rowing drift boat. I work in the field for construction services and the climbing helmet specific hood also fits nicely over a hard hat! I wash it on average once a month using Nikwax GORE-TEX specific wash and spray down with Nikwax DWR refresher and that's huge - if you want an expensive piece of equipment to last you've got to take care of it. Layer w/ a nano-air (patagonia) or atom series (arcteryx) and cotton/merino long sleeve for those November WY trout or winter steelhead fishing expeditions in MI and you're set!!! Now go do something fun.

Beta AR

I use this jacket for backpacking and everyday rainwear. The jacket is very abrasion resistant and stands up to repeated use. I love the extra space in the shoulders that prevent the arms from sliding up when worn with a pack.

The best shell I’ve ever owned

From the first time I put the jacket on I knew it would be a great jacket. It fits perfectly. I got it big enough to put a heavy sweater or light weight down jacket under it. But it isn’t too big when I wear it over a T-Shirt. I love it.

It's the Bombdiggity!

This is one great Jacket! Great fit, not too big, not too snug and I'm 5'11 180Lbs. Ample freedom of movement and with a base layers and unabashedly fends off whatever the elements throw at you. I usually wear a Ghost whisperer thin down jacket under it on most ski days and no matter how low the temp or wind speed, I'm always at the right temperature. This is the one jacket that goes everywhere with me! I'm thinking seriously about getting one for my wife this Christmas, what's the old saying? "If you buy quality, you only cry once!"

Really good allround jacket, really good for rain but works well as windstopper and just to keep some warmth as well. Makes quite a lot of sound, but that decreases a bit with use. The red color is great.

Long history

My experience with Arcteryx goes all the way back to December 2000, when I took a chance on a hitherto unknown brand and pulled the trigger on an unusually short Kappa SP shell (which is still very much in use - even the waterproofing is still going strong). After just a few times out with this marvel of textile engineering, I never even considered looking at any other brands. Since then, I've added a couple Beta ARs and a Beta FL to the list, wearing the first AR down from years of heavy use (still wearable, just not as waterproof) and the current AR and FL still serving me well. The fit of the AR is just about as perfect as a jacket can be - there's enough room to layer properly without feeling squeezed, but it can also be worn straight up without feeling like you're wearing a tarp. The sleeves will not hike up when raising your arms and the hem length provides constant coverage no matter how far you bend down. Even the hood works like a hood should, and this coming from an avowed anti-hood-wearer (childhood thing - bad hoody from mom). It sits properly and snugly on your head and follows its movements easily, even without a helmet. Beyond this, it's a relatively low-profile jacket, without a lot of extra frills - just the way a jacket should be. It has enough pockets to serve that purpose, but is otherwise economical in materials and weight. The material itself is initially a bit crinkly, but that soon disappears with use. Naturally, the waterproofing and breathability are spot on. All in all, you won't go wrong with this one.

Bombproof

This was my first Arc shell and I have nothing but great things to say. I've put some high mileage on this shell in pouring rain, blizzards you name it. I've bushwhacked for miles in it. This gore pro jacket is strong and will last you forever. I love the pit zips, I've had them open in light rain and still stayed dry inside the shell. Great jacket for backpacking and many other activities. I am currently trying to cut ounces for some thru and partial hikes and would love to try a lighter shell such as the alpha fl ;). My AR is a size large and slightly big on me but you want layer room. I'm 6' and 185 lbs and could probably downsize to a medium and still have a base and mid on.

Rock solid jacket for the great outdoors :-)

I have taken this jacket to several hiking/camping trips to Alaska with me in some austere conditions that include cold and hard winds. I am also a Federal Emergency Responder who prepositioned for Hurricane Harvey in Texas and participated in the events of Irma and Maria in St Thomas and Puerto Rico. My Beta AR withstand the harsh wind conditions with good ventilation and the brite RED color of the jacket gave me the confidence to know that I was visible. This is a great product that I will take with me on all my outdoor adventures and when called to respond to future events.
