Extremely well-made, very confortable

I bought the Arcteryx beta SV jacket because I have heard excellent comments about it, is really one of the best rain jackets I have ever tried. It really feels comfortable when wearing it, I can easily move around with it, I can bend and stretch my arms easily, is extremely durable, very superior weather protection, it has great hood, it reminds me of the theta SV jacket I had before. Everything can easily be adjusted, it has excellent fit.

My second Alpha SV!

I had my first Alpha SV for almost 15 years. It had survived largely unscathed after a lot of hard use, but I thought it was time to treat myself to a new one. I can't imagine a better made or more functional hard shell. Worth every penny. Looking forward to another 15 years of great use, before treating myself to another new one!
Q: Pros:
A: Functionality, quality
Q: Cons:
A: Pricey, but so worth it
Q: Activity
A: Skiing, snowboarding, general outdoors pursuits

Yes, I recommend this product.

Alpha is wonderful

I have had numerous Alpha's over the years. I love how the jacket is more fit than other ski type jackets. It works great for activities where you do not want a ton of bulk and require movement. I found each year the jacket to be very durable and extremely warm. You can pretty much run a light base layer or puff layer in the extreme cold without having to shed or put on layers. Over the years the fit and material seem to change a bit. I found the older jackets to be more quiet and softer to the touch. I feel the latest model can be kind of noisy and seems to be more durable. I would like to note the change in the fit. I have always worn an XL in this jacket. It was always tapered and a slim cut. This year, I had to return for a Large and it fits like the older XL fit. The colors can be confusing. The jackets never look like the pictures on the computer. I think they should also give a better description of their colors. Dynasty is really more orange than red. They should tell you this to avoid returns etc. Using names like forcefield, Tatsu, etc is cool but confusing for people just wanting to know the color. I've used this jacket for multiple activities. It has been perfect for snow biking, skiing, and Montana winters.
Q: Pros:
A: Extreme condition jacket
Q: Cons:
A: Fit seems to have gone bigger
Q: Activity
A: Fat-Biking, Hiking, Snowboarding, Casual.

Yes, I recommend this product.

The Ferrari of Hard Shells

What's to say? From my point of view the Alpha SV has been the industry leader for light and bulletproof since it's inception. Take care of this jacket and it will take care of you. Pros: - Light - Tough - good breathability - full hood for helmet - built for use with harness, no conflict between pockets and backpack/harness Cons: - you can buy a car for cheaper these days - You're going to look ridiculous wearing it to walk your dog. - seriously, this is a technical shell that should be treated like equipment. Unless you're walking your dog on a ski tour wear something else - Fresh three-ply goretex sounds like you're wearing a paperbag filled with sand paper If you're looking for a high quality, light, tough hard shell to tour, climb, or hike, you're probably already well acquainted with the Alpha SV. you probably have a picture of it surreptitiously taped somewhere you can admire it. You probably dream about it. You know you want it, and you're not you even need two kidneys anyways.
Q: Pros:
A: fit, features, rugged, light
Q: Cons:
A: price, range of use, care
Q: Activity
A: Ski, hike

Yes, I recommend this product.

Family "go-to" jacket

The Alpha SV really is a great jacket! Being an active family, we have multiple Arcteryx jackets, pants that are best for specific activities. But when space is an issue, we all reach for the Alpha SV. It's light weight, minimalist, tough as nails, with consistent quality. The only minor complaint I have is that it's "noisy" as all hardshell jackets are.

A: Dependable, waterproof, consistent
Q: Cons:

Ultimate Winter Jacket

I purchased this just before moving to and living on a ski hill for a full season. The jacket performed extremely well, wind/sleet/snow basically a non-issue through heavy use, on the hill and on snowmobile. Comfortable with or without a down layer, so it was fully usable from the coldest days to the warmest. I did get a rip in the jacket over the season, and Arcteryx fully covered it through their warranty, replacing it with a brand new one. Terrific jacket and customer service overall, if you need a heavy duty shell you can’t go wrong with this one!

good fit, feels solid but really weak fabric

I had this jacket for 3 years and went totally about 100 ski days with it. At first it felt fantastic, just like my previous Arc´teryx Alpha SV jacket. But just in a year the zipper start to hassle. A year later, the fabric had worn completely abnormally at the cuffs and at the waist. In the third year, the tightening at the hood comes off the fabric, which I have seen happen to other users. I have followed washing instructions and washed the jacket regularly with recommended washing program and detergent. Sadly, the service center thinks this is normal life time for a jacket in this price range and do not want to repair my lovely jacket. RA#897575

I had a very similar issue with my Alpha SV jacket too. The "Cohaeasive" adjusters on the hood came detached from the fabric after three years of sporadic use. Arcteryx repaired it with the older/classical hood cinching mechanism.. So much so for the improved Cohaesive adjusters....

Hey Mike, Thanks for reaching out to Arc'teryx with your feedback on the Alpha SV Jacket. We're sorry to hear about what happened to your Alpha SV Jacket. When trekking with a jacket it is generally good practice to pack it inside your bag as opposed to hanging by the hang loop as it is laminated onto the jacket as opposed to sewn in. A good method for packing your jacket and saving space would be to roll it up inside of the hood and place it securely within your pack. Nonetheless, we regret the experience you had. If you have any additional comments or concerns, please feel free to contact our Customer Service Line at 1-866-458-2473 (available Monday-Friday 8:00 AM- 5:00 PM PST), and one of our representatives would be glad to chat with you. Yes, same for me. Sent back and they offered to stitch the hem, which is nice but having washed it regularly and according to recommendations, I'm not delighted with longevity or the limited warranty. I have quite a lot of Arc gear and quite a lot of Patagonia. Sorry, but I won't be buying more Arc gear.

What more can be said?

I am on my second Alpha SV Jacket. They have been used for a number of seasons, mostly Ski Touring Guiding, and Winter Skills Courses in the unpredictable Scottish Highlands. It is a bomber jacket, robust fabric which just works. The features are well thought out without being too complicated of over engineered. Clearly a lot of thought has gone into making features simple and usable. Fit is good with enough space for extra layers but not too bulky without. Hood works with a big ski helmet and cinches down when using hood without a helmet. One small annoyance is the positioning of the velcro tabs on the wrist. With the cuffs fully open (or when wearing big gloves) the velcro tab barely reaches the other velcro fastener and as a result, easily comes loose. When the cuffs are fully tightened round the wrist, there is still lots of velcro which cannot be used. It seems that the velcro sewn onto the cuffs could be readjusted a few cm to more fully engage the tab. Other than that small tweak, the jacket is spot on.
Q: Pros:
A: Tough, Well cut, useful features
Q: Activity
A: Ski Touring, Winter Mountaineering, Climbing,

Yes, I recommend this product.

Parfait

Absolute bomber jacket

Used one of these for several years, and it has taken a beating. Around 250 days climbing ice, rock and alpine ridges, as well as a working at heights, performing lift evacuaiton training in a ski resort and alpine touring. Asides from a few holes I inflicted due to ice tools this jacket is almost like new. Make sure to wash it and it'll stick with you.

Amazing jacket

I bought this jacket for one purpose, to protect me from whatever was thrown at me outdoors. And it does. I wanted a jacket that could keep the wind, rain, snow, cats and dogs out. It is tough and has no issues pushing through dense bush without tearing. The hood has loads of adjustments for just the right fit. I would have liked extra hand pockets and the zipper for arm vents to run all the way down. When you first buy the coat the zippers are super stiff and not easy to use. I would have liked bigger zippers but also know that comes at cost of extra weight. The jacket is not cheap. The jacket is amazing. It is the one thing I always pack be it hiking, camping etc.
Q: Pros:
A: Best jacket ever
Q: Cons:
A: Hard to zip up, lacking pockets, ar
Q: Activity
A: Hiking, running, snowshoeing, trail clearing, skiing, cross country skiing

Yes, I recommend this product.
