I wanted to love this jacket, but it fell short. I'm 5'7", about 180 lbs, got a beer belly, but it's actually from eating like a champ, not drinking. The size Medium fits me best in the Ralle Insulated. My intended purpose was strictly city/urban/daily use. I run hot, low output usage. I live in Houston, Texas, where it gets cold only a few months of the year, and the rest is hot and steamy. I've tested this jacket several times walking around the block at different temperatures and think this jacket runs a bit toasty. Around 35-52 degrees F is where I think this jacket works for me. The GoreTex rain jacket portion works fine. The sleeves run a bit long on me, which at first I thought would be a deal breaker, but after further consideration, it wasn't a big deal. If it's cold enough to be wearing this jacket, one would probably have their hands in the pockets anyways, in which the extra sleeve length becomes a benefit and not a liability.
But here's where the jacket has its shortcomings.
The hood and collar design are a major fail. People come in different heights, shapes, sizes, in different proportions and all have different preferences. But this from my experience how it fits on me so far. The hood only has one strap at the top back of the head. It should have had two draw string cords for the cheek portion as well. Especially at this price point. A lot of my other $300+ technical rain jackets have this feature, whereas this is severely lacking. This also causes a big gap of exposure in the ear area. So if it's windy/gusty, hard rain, there is a lot of exposed face to the elements. So wind gusts, riding a bicycle, riding in a boat or take your pick, would blow the hood right off your head. And all cinching the back draw cord does is make the cord pull even tighter on your ears, while still leaving a big open gap around the cheek/ear area. Also, the cheek portion doesn't come far enough forward, and because of the draw string system, and shorter length of hood, it leaves a lot of my face exposed, which is a big problem given this is to be worn in the fairly cold temperatures and/or rain. Another thing is, the hood collar is very stiff. Maybe it would break in more over time, but unlike my other less expensive Gore-Tex technical rain jackets in other brands, the neck and hood does not want to turn along with my head if I turn my head from left to right, right to left. It's fairly stuck in one place. Another problem is, the chin piece sits almost an inch below and away from my chin area. Again, if this is to be worn in cold and/or rainy weather, that is leaving too much exposed face. Then, when I rest my hands in the front pockets, this causes the chin to drop even more, making the problem of exposed chin area even greater.
The front pockets are fleece lined, which is nice. But I'd argue there is not appreciable space in the pockets, and I do not have big hands.
The chest pocket is fleece lined, which I'm not sure what that helps. But I'd also argue the chest pocket does not have much appreciable space either, especially compared to my other technical rain jackets in other brands. The other problem with the chest pocket is it is not attached/secured/reinforced from the top. So that means, if you put anything like a cell phone in the chest pocket, it will droop/sag. I'd rather my cell phone sit snugly in the chest pocket, not sag.
I got this jacket in the hopes it would be an end all, be all jacket for high quality, cold weather, rainy weather. And to avoid using a layering system. This may still fit the bill for daily casual wear around town, and it's not intended to be a hard core survival jacket for an extreme backpacker or mountain climber hundreds of miles away from the nearest person. But the hood design is still a fail. Since the whole idea is to wear this if it's cold and raining, and the hood design is a fail, then I'd recommend looking elsewhere and/or sticking with your layering system with other jackets. I was hoping to use only one jacket say, from parking my car to walking to for example the mall in the cold rain, and only having one jacket to take off and carry while walking around the mall for a couple of hours. But the Ralle didn't provide that solution for me. I'll probably layer with my size Large Arc'teryx Atom Hoody underneath, with my size Medium SIMMS 2L Gore-Tex Flyweight shell over it for aforementioned weather conditions. And at this price point, these are technical details that should have been incorporated into this jacket. I'm very seriously debating returning this jacket.
