Arc’teryx Alpha FL Pack
We've always been committed to designing the very best products possible, which often involves a significant investment in research and patience. Developing new ideas means casting aside conventional methods of construction and manufacturing – and we've never been shy about creating unconventional tools and materials needed to shape big innovations.
Custom moulds (initially made by using IKEA garbage cans) were the catalyst behind Vapor™, the first three-dimensional harness to hit the market in 1998. Stretch-woven fabrics, better known as "softshells", came into existence because one of our designers insisted that a highly-breathable, comfortable, and weather-shedding fabric could be made by laminating two materials together. Ten years of obsessive research and refinement went into creating the WaterTight™ zipper, now considered an industry standard.
This is the high standard that we set for ourselves, and how we like to work. Building our own factory and manufacturing tools; fostering an in-house team of skilled designers, textile technicians, and pattern makers is what allows us focus on designing and building the best gear that we possibly can.
Out of this spirit of innovation comes the new Alpha FL Pack – part of our Spring/Summer 2014 collection – which has just received the Outdoor Industry Gold Award for outstanding design and performance. The SS14 season marks a reinvention of our Advanced Composite Construction: AC² pack technology. First introduced in 2006, AC² was a complete departure from conventional pack construction. Using a unique, exceptionally lightweight, durable, and bondable fabric, packs were redefined as three-dimensional products that could be taped and sealed like a waterproof garment.
Weighing in at just 680 grams, the Alpha FL is an ultralight and highly weather-resistant alpine climbing pack. Designed with custom-engineered N400r-AC2 nylon ripstop fabric, it is weatherproof, exceptionally durable, and yet supple enough to accommodate the shape of its contents, making the bag less prone to punctures. Three-dimensional patterning reduces load-bearing seams, shaves weight, and creates a simple, streamlined form. A drawcord closure with an easy, one-handed-pull closure system replaces the traditional alpine top lid. Inside, is an extension collar with a waterproof Rolltop™ closure, which allows climbers to extend the pack's volume when desired.
We are very honoured to receive this prestigious award and look forward to sharing the entire new collection with all of you.
