Running the Kandel Höhenweg Trail
Jens Wächter is one of our favourite online folks, and a big fan of our running gear. He started ultra running around two years ago and has made steady progress since, increasing his distance and looking for new challenges along the way – for example, opting to run to and from work rather than driving, and accumulating over 200km on a good week.
He's fortunate to have a job that often takes him all over the world, giving him the opportunity to run in new and interesting locations – including the Cradle Mountains in Tasmania, and the hills of Barcelona – while following his credo of 'travel light and fast'.
For a recent challenge, Jens had heard of the Kandel Höhenweg hiking trail in the Black Forest near Freiburg, Germany. The trail is divided into five sections, each one usually hiked a day at a time, but Jens didn't have that kind of time, so he decided to run it all (110km / 3,500m altitude gain) in one shot – apparently the first time that's ever been done.
He had a great run, with plenty of support from his family along the way, and you can check out a handful of his photos that we've included in this post. Here's some of our gear that he brought along: Alpha SL Jacket, Incendo Jacket, Trino Jersey LS, Motus Crew LS, Motus Crew SS, Incendo Tight, Incendo Short, and Phase AR Beanie.
It doesn't look like Jens will be resting for too long. He already has some great plans for 2013, including a similar trail run in Ireland that has been completed before in thirty-seven hours, as well as the Arc'teryx Squamish 50. All of it building up to his biggest challenge to date, of crossing France on foot, unsupported.
We wish Jens all the best in his future adventures, and look forward to seeing him in Squamish this August (almost as excited as Jens was to register for the race!).
